Things That Make You Happy

I am at the point where I find benefits infinitely more valuable than income.

Got a lot of peers that were doing well until a bad illness cleaned them out. More than willing to compromise on money for health insurance and paid vacation.

Splitting hairs at this point. Paid vacation is literally just money. Insurance can be bought for money.

But if you want, I’ll rephrase to say the only reason to pay for a university education is to obtain gainful employment later on based on the degree.

I feel quite the opposite. It is something I wish was greater emphasized to college kids. I know too many that lock on to income and don’t consider the immense value of a pension or, at the very least, 401k.

Insurance can be bought with money, sure. If you don’t have it when you need it, it sucks. When your employer provides it, it becomes a non-issue.

No rephrasing necessary: I am just having a conversation.

As a parent with kids who get into some wild shit, I can say that insurance is BIG, and a plan with a $5K deductible is not in the same universe as one with a $250 deductible, when you have one paycheck to support said kids, a mortgage, and a stay-at-home wife.

Also true if you get surgery so frequently that they should give you a punch card where the 10th one is free.

I will never understand the american system, however I’m 99% sure my little man wouldn’t be alive right now if he was living under it.

In keeping with the thread title:

Healthcare free at point of delivery makes me happy.

We’re in full thread derail mode now, but I’ll bite. Employers pay money for your insurance. It costs a lot. But it’s still just a tangible asset with monetary value that your employer gives you to get you to work for them.

And some employers pay a low percentage and leave you with the bulk of the cost for a high deductible plan, while others cover you (and even your spouse regardless of if they have access through their employer) for very little cost to you with a low deductible one because their employee’s health is important to them. I would venture so far as to say that benefits are the real clue as to how much you’re valued by your employer.

I think the third with the same surgeon should be free. My last shoulder op would’ve counted…and it was the fourth surgery at that office.

I’m impressed that you have any idea what you want to do. When I was 18 i thought I wanted to go to law school (didn’t), ended up doing an MA in political science (which I haven’t even come close to using), and now do software development but am not sure I even want to do this.

I THINK I know what I want to do… emphasis on THINK…

I’ve been color blind my whole life. Yesterday, my wife surprised me with sunglasses that correct it. While I didn’t tear up, it’s blind blowing how different life looks. Everything, unknowingly to me, had a dark depressing grayscale that now is so bright and vibrant.

We have a Spotify subscription that gets shared between all of us.

A few weeks ago, I discovered that if someone is using it and I start the Spotify app, then I will see the tracks being listened to.

I also discovered that if I then try to play a song, Spotify will ask me if I want to start the music on my device or on the device that is currently playing.

Anyway, my wife seems to listen music now and again while at work or driving around. Here and there, say once or twice a week, I have been randomly injecting a song by Tiny Tim, Rick Astley, Moris Minor and the Majors, Allan Sherman, Monty Python or similar into her listening sessions.

I am so happy we have the technology to allow me to be a subtle nuisance like this.

Haha You reminded me of when I first got a speaker that I could stream to.

I would get to my front door and I’d put on stuff like I’m Bringing Sexy Back, Hero, Wind Beneath my Wings. Then I’d walk in… Good times for months (way beyond the point of it being funny)
