The way I am looking at it not only did they extend a welcome to you but you took the first step by seeing beyond and having the balls to train there.
Thats the biggest thing in getting over our differences in society no matter how real or imagined. To look beyond what you see and taking the plunge. Something like that.
Jason, I beleive in free speech but you have got to realize that there are good and bad people from all backgrounds and what makes someone a true honest to goodness human being is not religion or color, but with respect towards your fellow man. As far as the location, it is Newark NJ so both bronx and wtlftgrl you were close. Free E. yes, your right, part of the Vixens drive is to be able to kick my ass right about now, (actually told me that if I medal in my upcoming MA tourny in July she wants me to wear the medal home so she can choke me with it! If that helps drive her thru her therapy…then whatever works bro!! I have to say that besides the color issue, the other thing that is new to me is having a gym full of guys as big or bigger than me. My last two gyms have been foo foo healthclubs…the kind where usually if you are a T-man, your one of the biggest ones there. This place…damn! a lot of roids running thru the place and a whole lot of size! Today was arms, and let me say…you really try for those few extra reps when the guy doing curls a little ways down from you has what look to be 19"-20" guns! It is a different world…and a HELL of a lot more motivating as compared to seeing the usual Joe businessman with his 13" arms doing curls with 20 pounders! As I said, you can feel the T in the place, just got to buy a doo rag so I can fit in!

Whopper, great story! I work at an inner city hospital, and have found people of color in general to be much more forgiving and generous than caucasians. I wonder if your new friend would have been as warmly received at one of the Foo-Foo gyms. I have personal experience with the fact that we all bleed red, and assholes and angels come in all colors, shapes and sexual orientations. I enjoy your posts and always thought you sound like a levelheaded, funny, smartass with a soft spot. Guess that shows through when you are “hittin a bag” too!

That is the fallacy of Protestantism. I go by the teachings of the TRADITIONAL Roman Catholic Church, the Church Militant, God’s representative on earth. Only Holy Mother Church has the AUTHORITY to interpret Scripture. The Church Fathers teach that the Negroes are the cursed descendants of Cham (spelled “Ham” in the Protestant Bible), and the European Caucasians are the descendants of Japheth. Read Genesis 9 to see the God-ordained relationship between the descendants of Cham (Negroes) and Japheth (Whites). I’ll give you a clue: “equality” is not part of the picture.

Guys like you make me laugh. You think because you are white (which I am as well) that you are someway superior to other races. Yet in reality for someone who has admitted to being manic depressive I would think that you would want people to treat you equally even though you are “special” yourself.
The best part is if your friends in the so called “superior” race started some kind of “cleansing” you would be one of the ones taken out because they would have no use for “special” people either.
Other than that Jason, life is kinda ironic sometimes. One day one of these "inferior races" may indeed save your ass or someone you love someday of something bad ever happened one day. Like you get mugged and some black cop helps you. Or someone you love gets sick and a jewish or black doctor saves thier life.

My last gym was pretty basic, weights, cardio equiptment and a few hammer strength machines. No classes or pool or anything fancy. I didn’t know anyone there and had never exchanged more than ‘hi’ with anyone. I worked out with my ex most of the time, but occasionally was alone. I went in by myself one day with a number of VERY large bruises - from rugby - and a big man I had never spoken to stopped and said ‘Do you need me to get you some help?’ pointedly looking at the bruises. I assured him they were from a rugby game, and he walked away still looking concerned. It was great to know that a total stranger cared enough to offer help like that.
On Monday, at my current gym, someone asked me if I had been sick or just taking some time off (I changed my workout time for a week) because he hadn’t seen me around. I love the way that training creates a ‘fraternity’ of sorts. When people see you are as intense as they are they gain respect for you even if they don’t know you.
