When reviewing a chess game online, and I’m in a clearly winning position (mate in 4 or so) and I see that I hung mate in 1 but my opponent didn’t see it and blunders right back by losing their queen.
I’ll be posting a similar post in things that make you angry
Never understood why people would play board games, when all you ever need is chess. Maybe because people like having chance involved instead of pure skill and brute intelligence deciding the outcome?
There are some really great board games out there (not the common ones you usually think of) but I have also determined that chess really comes down to just who can memorize the largest number of patterns and recall then quickly.
I never reached that level, or even close, so i really am freestyling it instead of implementing preplanned strategies and plays. I just find it a really fun game to play- which is odd because i HATE puzzles, riddles, and the vast majority of things that require me to think hard for “fun”- i do enough of that at work.
Complete lunatics from Philadelphia who sorta played hardcore punk but really just wanted to beat themselves, and their audiences, to a bloody pulp. Which they did, every night. True and utter rock’n’roll mayhem at its most savage and dangerously reckless. How this band got away with destroying so many venues and injuring so many paying customers is a mystery.
Couple reasons come to mind - the first, and probably most accurate one, is chess if fookin’ hard man. It can be relaxing and fun, but can also make you want to jump in front of a bus…
Another reason is it’s perceived to be “for smaht people” - which is and isn’t true. I mean, I’ll never be Magnus Carleson or Garry Chess or anything - I’m not gifted at it at all - I’m just some average schmuck who said “fuck it if it’s hard, let’s play and get better anyway”.
But, yea, it’s infinitely fun imo and challenging once you break through that stereotype of it being “elite” or “only for smaht” people or w/e some preconceived notions of the Game of Kings might be…
I mean, at the higher levels yea. Like I doubt you’d get to the GM level w/o learning a few opening 20 moves deep along with all the variations BUT, there will come a time in most games, even at the GM level, where you have to get creative and actually “play chess”.
Of course, I only know 3 openings to about 4 or 5 moves deep at this point so … mostly I just play chess haha … I have learned some end game patterns and obviously some mating patterns … but even then, I miss some possibly opponent responses that just throw a fuckin’ monkey wrench in my strategy…
I like playing on gameknot, games played over days and weeks instead of short time controls. Of course, it does lend itself to douchebags who use engines to cheat, but I don’t feel bad about losing to that at all…
There was a swimmer from an African country in one of the Olympics who may have been the best swimmer in his country but was well behind the worst swimmer from any other country. That was eye opening.
