Things That Make You Chuckle

The Eurovision song contest is for any country in which the Eurovision channel is broadcast I believe. No-one that I know of has ever knowingly watched the Eurovision channel.

My 5 YO got me good the other day.

One of our cats was batting something around. It turned out to be a cat turd (we have four cats of varying degrees of intelligence).

I said, of course, ā€œWhat a crappy toy.ā€

Without missing a beat, he hits me with, ā€œWhat a crappy joke, dad.ā€

What a dumb language @Bagsy

No matter how ā€œstupidā€ German is. I still love it- just need stop making excuses to procrastinate learning it

I still find it funny why all nouns are capitalized

I know it’s just a silly meme, but we could honestly find dozens of more reasons why English is a ā€œdumbā€ language. Especially the way it’s spoken today. German is pretty straightforward to learn in my opinion. I think I would be pretty frustrated learning English as a foreign language… then again, most native speakers of any tongue say that.

ohhh… I am SOOOO glad I grew up speaking Mandarin.
Doubt I could learn it as a foreign language

If you have been in this game for any length of time you will have wasted money on a supplement or two. I thought this meme was a good representation of time with supplements.

Only if you’re dealing with steamboat companies on the Danube and their respective captains.

Or beef labeling supervision law.

I always wondered if native speakers of English can wrap their heads around the concept of grammatical cases when learning a foreign language that has them.

This was a HUGE issue for me learning Spanish… and a VERY big reason I decided not to do Russian studies

Oh man I I haven’t seen that one in years. Thanks for the reminder, hahaha!

For sure. As you said it’s just a fun bit. While the sentence in the meme is indeed correct, no one would actually talk like that.

I doubt it. I don’t think any of my friends would know what they are. My parents definitely would not. I think that’s a big reason why a lot of English speakers give up on learning a foreign language.

I remember so many of my peers in high school taking 3-5 years of a foreign language and barely being able to say anything by the end…

I’m a native English speaker that started learning Russian at 15. I’m fluent now.

There’s a distinction between learning to speak a foreign language, which is really just getting to a point where it flows off your tongue without thinking about it, and learning the grammar of a foreign language, which requires quite a bit of study and memorization. Learning a foreign language as an adult, you really need to do some of both.

The problem I see a lot of English speakers have is that they don’t understand English grammar. We have cases for some of our pronouns in English. If you understand the difference between ā€œIā€ and ā€œme,ā€ you can understand cases. But most Americans just speak English without understanding it.

The other difficulty with learning a foreign language as an American is the purely practical problem that most foreigners speak English better than Americans speak their language, which leads to communication happening in English and Americans getting no practice in the foreign language.
