They're BACK! (Van Halen!)

.

.

well…every vid of the tour has pretty much sucked until the vids from the san diego show came out…eddie is on frickn fire !

and correct me if i’m wrong but after 2 months of some pretty heartless performances diamond dave is starting to wake the fuck up. listen to him after he sticks that chicks phone in his pants, grinds it around and sings " here’s a picture FOR YOU !!!"

that’s DIAMOND DAVE coming out isn’t it ?

or here when dave gets totally fucking lost and then DIAMOND DAVE comes to the rescue:

man that is one fucking classic roth moment. what accounts for the change ?

did it just take a couple of months to shake off the rust ?

has roth wisely started doing coke again ?

my personal observation is the shows until now have been mostly attended by dudes in dockers and “DIAMOND DAVE” only shows up where there’s a good supply of chicks.

whatever it is, i like it.

Well, well, WELL worth it. Trust me.

They just added a bunch of additional dates in '08, so they’re swinging back my way and I’m catching them at the Garden in March. My seats are . . . (cough - don’t tell anyone - cough) . . . front row.

Pay up. It’s worth it.

(And bring your earplugs)!

??

Trust me, 90% of the nights they’ve been very, very ON. Read the reviews from all the different cities/papers/magazines – they’re SMOKIN’ on this tour. YouTube ain’t gonna’ do it justice. They’ll have the better nights and worse nights, sure, but even their worse nights on this tour are pretty freaking polished.

Just go, trust me. When you walk out it’ll be on of those “WOW” moments.

Got to see the first show here in Charlotte. Fricking fantastic! Best part was my buddy paid for the tickets. Everybody wants some!

sorry man…with all of the bullshit that’s gone on, years of bullshit, i’ve just had a hard time believing… and i really didn’t believe it until i heard dave scream “here’s a picture for you!” that they weren’t full of shit again. obviously i’m wrong and i’m glad about that !

that said i’m still not sure if i will pony up that kind of cash for this show…i saw them in 82 and 84 and the tickets back then were $10.50 and $15 -which for reference was slightly more money than a case of beer. easily within reach for a kid in junior high. i’m not saying they don’t deserve the money, just that there’s alot of other shows i’ll be going to, like CLUTCH and Hank3, and alot of beer i’ll be drinking, with the $400+ it would cost me to see this one.

I have mixed feelings about this tour…

Part of me really wants to go (Halen was my first concert, and my favorite group for many years) I like Roth and Haggar both, they were quite different but both good.

But…you simply cannot get rid of Michael Anthony, and replace him with a 16 year old. No matter how gifted Wolfgang is.

It is not the same without “Mr. Jack Daniels”

It pains me greatly, but Van Halen is dead.

Shit happens dude. No offense, but Michael brought a good bass line and background vocals, but cmon...The Van Halen sound is all about Edward/David/and Alex for the most part. You're crazy if you don't think this is a solid tour.
I still remember vividly the reactions from my enlish teacher in 8th grade in 1978 when I brought the debut Van Halen album into class and played "Runnin with the Devil". It was insanity, and the teacher just about shit as well as the rest of the class. I've been a guitar freak my whole life, and Eddie was the first real inspiration for my learning the instrumental rock sound and constantly trying to play it. Those shows back then were so unfucking real, it was beautiful. Those were the days. I enjoyed Sammy's run with the band, and he has a hell of a voice, but Diamond Dave is and always be the man for VH. Gary Cherone never quite fit the bill for me, though he's a talent also. I'm extremely happy for all of them, for finally getting it together, and while it does suck a little that Michael's not in this, it would never stop or deter from the fact that it's a historic and awesome moment in rock history right now.

My main guys now are the instrumental rock gods, and heavy bands, but Van Halen will always be my full on favorite singing rock band of all time. They fucking rule. We don't know what transpired with Michael, but get over it, they're kicking fucking ass now so it's a mute point. I hope they get an album out soon.

I hear you, but I still disagree.

Van Halen was all about party, party, party…

I was never into it for the “biting guitar work” from Eddie. They sounded like people I would want to party with and Anthony was one cool mutherfucker.

I am sure that the people who liked VH for 15 min. guitar solo’s will be happy, but Van Halen was more than that for me.

No you're wrong. So you liked the band because they "sounded like people you wanted to party with"?
Exactly what "sound" are you talking about? The sound of JD getting guzzled, or the sound of a good snort going up your nose? Or the cool way they talked in interviews? I mean how could it not be about the synergy of the instruments and vocals they played?

I tend to think that a LOT more people would say they liked THE MUSIC too dude. Yeah they all partied and exuded that vibe, but you don't make sense. You're playing down the "15 min. guitar solo's", like they were a gimick.

Van Halen was more than watching Michael Anthony swig his Jack Daniels day in and day out. You can go catch Michael and his "band" without Sammy anytime dude. Without Sammy he's not that exciting truthfully. And that's why you don't see him on tour anywhere. Though he is supposedly going to try and develop a new band w/out Sammy.

See who’s got the better act ok? And then come back and tell me how Michael’s band crushed the new Van Halen. You seem to forget all about David’s antics and showmanship, as well as Alex’s outrageous drumming abilities. Wow, so you like people that party, well I like people with a real TALENT besides slamming down Jack Daniels and getting fucked up.

You seem to be downplaying every one else in the band besides Michael. Whatever, it doesn't make sense and you should just start a Michael Anthony Party fan club.

Seriously, the whole band contributed to their kick ass sound, including Michael, but their success and loyal fan base certainly wasn't because of Michaels drinking and "partying".

                    Wow.

.

I saw them at the palace of auburn hills, I will see them again at Van Andle in april.

Easy there TURBO…

Put down the cool-aid and relax.

I love Van Halen asshat, I do not put Anthony above any of the other members, and I have no desire to see MA and Haggar’s Other Half tour.

When I was into VH they were a different band, not that they are not good now, they are just different…way different.

Now please write another 400 word response as to how I suck ass for daring to disagree with the “total awesomeness” of the new VH.

And yes Jack Daniels makes it better.

…as for mikey, if he were in, it would push me over the edge and i’d buy tickets…on the other hand maybe i should buy tickets anyway as i think it’s pretty damn sweet they got roth up there and he somehow negotiated to sing only his tunes. think about it… that must have taken some doing for eddie and alex to nix all the other music they wrote from this tour. wolfie probably helped there; i’ve read he’s a fan of the roth stuff.

if they put out a new record that would be the shit…but it’s not exactly like people are buying records these days though so we may never see another vh record again…ah fuck should i go to the msg show or not…@ the 1982 show i went to carrier-dome security confiscated a sweet ceramic bowl i made in art class. who knows i might somehow find it @ madison square garden… i mean stranger things have happened right ?

I was going to say yes, you should definitely go, right up until you told the story about the ceramic bowl. Who the hell brings a ceramic bowl to a Van Halen concert???

oh man you’re killing me ! think about it bro…

I’m going to infer from context that the confiscated art class ceramic “bowl” was not made for holding potato chips.

I watched a bunch of the videos, and here’s my take…

Eddie looks like an Aushwitz survivor, but his playing is as good as in his prime. His unique style and skill holds up, 30 years later.

The kid needs some wardrobe assistance. I mean c’mon, he’s playing on tour with VH, and he looks like Wayne & Garth!

Dave. He still has his voice, minus most of the high pitched shrieking that was really a part of the VH trademark sound. That’s a big loss to the sound. In most of the videos he looks like he’s just going through the motions - no energy, doing the “let the audience sing along” crap. He reminds me of a lounge or wedding singer.

I think that in the old days, the audience attention was split between the otherworldly guitar playing by Eddie, and Dave’s extreme physicality and onstage antics. I think without his acrobatics and physical style of jumping around, he’s kind of lost up there.

He just kind of prances around there in a suit jacket, like every song is the “Just a Gigolo” video. He’s in great physiscal shape appearance-wise, but I guess at 50-something he can’t (or just doesn’t want to) put in the physical effort anymore. (still better than the “Red Rocker” though. ugh.)

WHOA, total brain fart on my part! I literally had tunnel vision and was envisioning some big, artfully painted, popcorn-bowl-sized ceramic bowl that you actually made in art class, like with mohave-style markings on it and shit! Ooops.
