I see. I am curious though, isn’t the whole point of Jesus his self sacrifice; nullifying a need for personal sacrifice?
Having read the thread nearly everyone seems to be giving up something for personal gain…save money, weight loss, feel better etc etc. Surely lent is about doing something which uncomfortable and without personal gain?
I have more respect for Muslims during Ramadan who don’t eat or drink from dawn til dusk than most Catholics (me being one of them) who makes VERY small sacrifices that don’t really interfere with their daily lives. Now that’s showing some devotion to their faith.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but it isn’t in the Bible.

No. Though without Jesus’ sacrifice, our sacrifice would not be able to merit anything.

I don’t know what most Catholics do during lent for fasting, prayer, and almsgiving. I assume the reason I don’t hear about all this grand sacrifice is because as Catholics we are supposed to do it in secret. And, St. Theresa (female Doctor of the Church) never made big sacrifices, but she was well versed in doing small sacrifices. So, I wouldn’t discount small sacrifices.

Why does it need to be in the Bible?

The Bible is a map (per se) of how we should live our lives, is it not? And Jesus never came out and said, “Give something up for 40 days,” did he?

I went to a Catholic primary school, secondary school, college and a predominantly Catholic university too! I know very few younger Catholics (<40yr old) who do anything during lent other than the old “give up chocolate” type crap. As far as I’m concerned this isn’t really a sacrifice and doesn’t make your life any harder for those 40-days, or particularly make you reflect on Jesus’ hardship in the desert. I would be really surprised to see how many Catholics would follow Ramadan type fasting during lent if the Vatican recommended it?
The state of the Church and I’m including most Christian faiths in this, not just Catholicism, is quite pitiful in the UK. Go to church on a Sunday morning and in many of them you will be lucky to see 100+ people.
I’m not discounting small sacrifices btw, but nobody should be feeling holier than thou when the things they are doing are not really “sacrifices”.
