Church.
I am giving up coffee and sweets, same as last year. People can hate all they want on Catholics and Lent, I don’t care. I don’t do it for the approval of others, therefore, I don’t have to justify it.

Energy Drinks. Both for my health, my budget, and the mental task of it all. I’m not Catholic and thus am not required to do lent but I like the mental challenge of it and knowing that worldly things do not control me.
This. I spend way too much money on stinkin’ energy drinks. $3 redbull 4X week X 12 months = could’ve had a prowler already… BTW, I’m a Methodist and we get our Lent on also.
I’m giving up Gravity.
I’m not religious but we really should leave this thread alone and not be clever jerks with “I’m giving up Christianity” and such jokes as this.

I do it every year. This year I’m not “Giving up” anything per se, but rather, I’m going to be more positive and I’m going to be less judgmental!
I’m not religious so don’t really have anything to add to this thread but I just wanted to say - you have an awesome smile! That was all. ![]()

You have a awesome chin.
You have an awesome mask.

You have an awesome lack of bubble gum
But I can’t stop kicking ass till I’ve got some more…
…and thanks for keeping that joke going!

I kinda think that Lent is worthless. If you’re going to give up a bad habit or try and act like a better person, then why not do that the other 325/326 days a year?

That’s my thought on new years resolutions too.
Why say “I’m gonna do blablabla this year” when you can do it anytime, no need for a fresh year…
Here would be the biggest challenge, Give up T-Nation for 40days. Bam.

Agreed, those jokes are out of line. Oh you must be referring to me…
According to my facebook pretty much anyone doing this is just giving up some type of food or substance that is not good for them anyway. Seems a lot more like delayed short term new years resolutions.

Well it’s obvious you gave up your sense of humor for lent.
I will give up cumming for 40 days. Challenge accepted.

I’m not against mocking religion, just against the same joke every page.
Gave up eating out… makes me prepare all my food and saves money!
Also decided to brush, floss and rinse before bed every night

you have to start somewhere, and if you mentally think you need a food or a substance, isnt giving it up and laerning you dont need it the whole point?
I thought abuot giving up my cellphone for 40 days but couldnt bring myself to try.

I maybe wrong,
But, let’s look at the facts. Though people often give up bad habits and try and act like better persons during Lent this isn’t necessarily the time to be doing so and is certainly not the purpose of lent, though the End of lent should lead one to being a better person. All the time is a better time, all the time is a much better time to be giving up bad habits and being a better person.
Though I can understand why some folks would assume that during lent you give up bad habits. Sometimes a person will give up wine and beer, though it seems there are some people in America who believe wine and beer is inherently evil, however, i do not believe that is the case. Wine and beer are gifts. So, giving up wine may not be giving up a bad habit, but giving up a gift for…I’ll explain lower.
Catholics believe that there are times through the year that are times of penance. We can read here in the Catechism what it says about lent:
I assume that when people give something up for lent it is not necessarily that they are giving up a bad habit (though they might), or that they are now only trying to be a better person…but that they are giving up a gift for penance. That them trying to be a better person is not only during Lent, but also in Advent and Christimastide, Easter time, &c. All year round.
Anyway, regards.

I like the idea of giving something up because I believe there is something useful in learning to make sacrifices. It builds character, and teaches you how to delay gratification. Sure, it’s good practice at any time, and certainly it doesn’t have to be done at lent or New Year’s, but if that’s what gets you motivated, then why not?
It’s like any other commitment that requires discipline and stick-to-itiveness, just like hitting the weights every day. By the way, there was a great article about the ability to delay gratification in the Wall Street Journal last week. Here’s the link: Arthur Brooks: Obama's Budget Flunks the Marshmallow Test - WSJ
Anyway, I’m giving up ice cream. That’s gonna be tough: I can eat an entire half gallon in one sitting.
So, how are all the unnecessary slaps in Jesus’ face going?
