The Zombie may be Alive!

funny, yesterday I was moving some cement blocks around and thought of you, and then there you are… nice to see you back.

I read some of your log and noticed you were recovering from this also. I’ll be following your progress closely. I guess I was pretty naive,I did not expect it to hurt as much as it did. Did you have one of those pain pumps? It was a catheter stuck into my neck which fed in a supply of pain killer when I squeezed the little ball. After the surgery meds wore off, I was in agony, that thing was pretty worthless. I also had compression therapy for a week. It’s a machine hooked up to an inflatable sleeve, I guess you could call it, that fit over the shoulder and deltoids. Now that felt great! It was a cold compress basically, sucker made me fall asleep.

When was your surgery?

Yes, I had the pain pump. And I also had the compression vest. Loved that thing. I did fine with the pain, actually. So my expectation ended up being worse than my experience. But the bruising was horrendous for a time.

The biggest surprise for me is how long it has taken to get strength back. I see my surgeon in another two weeks.

Love your toys. That’s very inventive of you.

Thank You! My surgery was back on April 15th. I started riding my bike as soon as I got the sling off, about the middle of May, and began picking up stones and such a couple weeks after that. After about 8-10 weeks out I started dragging sled and doing farmers. Now I’m flipping my tire and getting out the weights. I had been down for a while prior to the surgery so my strength loss wasn’t a real surprise to me. It came back pretty quick after my biceps tear so I suspect it will again.
What about you…when was yours?

Lots going on this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, I got in my usual bike rides. Saturday was spent moving a couple of refrigerators, new one in, old one out. Today it was time to test out the third incarnation of my draggy sled. The first one was a tire I had in the shed,a car tire, worked nice at first 'cept for an occasional problem with it flipping over, but I quickly out grew it even with two 35 plates in it. The second I went over board, I used a great big mud truck tire, which had even more issues with flipping over till I moved the eye bolts toward the front a bit, but it’s very very heavy. The third and hopefully final go at it I used a regular truck tire. So far so good.

After two warm up sets of 100 step bucket farmers, each bucket about 100lb., not quite as heavy as my cinder block rigs, they’re about 130. I took the sled for a 45 minute stroll around the neighborhood. I usually alternate between ropes over the shoulder, then around the waist, and sometimes I’ll turn around and pull it.
Once back home,

2 sets of triceps extensions with a 40 lb DB, that didn't hurt.
2 100step sets with 80lb stone
2 sets shrugs with the buckets
2 50 step sets with the cinder blocks, first time I've been able to pick those up.
1 final set 100 steps bucket farmers

Really wanted to get the flipping tire out today, but the grass is wet, and that tire gets really slippery when it’s wet.

Yard has dried out so out comes the loader/dozer tire for some flipping.

8 sets of 8 flips, first 6 sets with as much power and speed as I could muster.
the last two sets were kinda cool down sets after the deads.

Between each set of flipping I did a set of deadlifts
Two weeks ago I did some deads for the first time in forever, well, 6 or 8 months.
I worked up to 225 and did a few sets with that and called it good.
Today sets went like this
1x8x95
1x8x135
1x8x185
1x6x225
1x2x275
1x1x295
1x1x315
1x1x335
1x1x345
When I stepped up to the bar without thinking I set up Sumo so I went with it. 345 was pulled conventional, but I’m pleased and encouraged by those sets. I’ve been terrified I was losing all of my strength, as the weight has fallen off.

Finished up with BB Rows
3x5x135

Great work, DZ, and great to see you posting again. I am looking forward to reading more.

Thanks Jack…I like your doggies.

Today I actually drove my dragging trail to know how far it really is, and it's 3/4 mile. I really like the tire sled and the workout I get with it. Different surfaces create different amounts of drag on the tire, so the workout's constantly changing while I'm dragging.

The new tire is awesome, but I’m keeping the big mud tire just in case.
So, today’s workout was tire sled dragging w/35lb plate, 3/4 mile drag took 30 minutes.
120lb stone carries - 4x40 steps
Cinder block farmers - 4x40 steps
Cinder block shrugs - 4x12

My cinder block rigs are two 60lb cinder blocks lashed together with a couple of chains and a handle I made for each rig, so, they weigh about 125lb each. First workout with the 120lb stone in a long time. The avatar picture is the 80lb stone. I’ve collected a new stone that must weigh about 150-160, a beautiful pink granite boulder I hope to use soon.

Brought back the old avatar. Good. A 3/4 mile drag of anything is brutal. 160# stone? Damn. Looks like your getting your stride back. I can hear your neighbors now, “Look Ethel, he’s back at it again!”

345 DL is pretty good for only the second time in forever. I can’t remember what you were doing before, but I’m pretty sure it was in the 400’s. It’ll come back quick. Now that I’m doing HG, it might be to my advantage to try some of your yard toy tricks. Caber in particular needs a lot of general strength that the yard toys would work good.

Yea hel, I pulled that out to keep my ass focused and motivated, and looking forward to cooler weather. I got that big rock into my truck before my surgery so I know I can pick it up whatever it weighs. I’ll have to get a new scale so I can weigh my new stones.

Thanks Carl, you are right I pulled 407 at my last meet for a PR. I’ve got a few ideas for other things I should be doing I’ll share when I get 'em going.

DZ, sorry for not welcoming you back sooner! That is some impressive rehab you got going! How does the new shoulder feel hangin all that poundage from it again?

I’m with MJ. Sorry about the late welcome back. I’ve collected a few stones in the yard since you’ve been gone. Looking forward watching you rehab and comparing outdoor workouts.

Thanks fellas…yea certain things still hurt but not what I’ve been doing. I think snap has said the same’ the deads and heavy pulling doesn’t hurt. Over head stuff is out but I can now raise my arm over head with only a little pain. I can feel the the fire coming back Eco. Working out outside in the rain this morning was inspiring for me. While out there I’m wonder what it is that makes me enjoy it so much. The added discomfort of being wet in 55 degree weather? I don’t really know, but this is what it’s about for me. What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger right?

Looking forward to our December lake effect snow storms this Winter. I’ve got ideas to do a lot more out in the snow this Winter. I have to believe there must be something abnormal about what I like to do since I don’t know anyone else who does it, except some of my friends here. Are we all abbynormal, or are we the only ones who have our heads in the right place?

Anyway…enough reflection, I know all my neighbors think I’m nuts, but I intend on out living all of them with a much higher quality of life!

Today’s workout

3/4 mile tire drag w/35lb plate, I think I’m ready for the 45 plate
5 sets - 100 steps bucket farmers(not as heavy as cinder blocks, maybe 100lb.)
5 sets - 100 steps 80lb stone

DZ – Good stuff. Great 'habbing.

Thanks D!

Yesterday was a bike ride in the morning followed by apple picking and the county fair in the afternoon. Fun Day.

Today my primary mission was tire flipping, but while doing that I want to fool around with the bar and weights to begin to see what my shoulder can tolerate. I still have pain, not all the time and not always really bad pain, but pain nonetheless. After this experience this is not pain I’m willing to push through for fear of damaging something.

Tire flipping
10sets of 9 - 90 flips

Skull Crushers
1x10x45
1x6x65
3x15x45

OH presses(not locked out, just to where it starts to hurt)
3x10x45

Bent over side laterals
3x10x10s

Abs
3x20

BB curls
3x10x45

Oblique twists
3x10 W/80lb stone
2x5 W/ big ass new granite boulder

Yes I picked up that new granite boulder of mine. That sucker is at least 30lbs heavier than the 120 stone maybe more. The shoulder is kinda sore but not too bad

You do some serious shoulder work. I’ve been so cautious, taking things really slow. I keep expecting my tendon to just snap off the bone again.

Describe your pain, can you?

That’s funny I was thinking the same thing about you, jealous of your progress and what your able to do. The pain is deep inside the joint maybe even inside the socket. He did so much in there I’m not really certain what it is I’m feeling. It’s different than what I had before the surgery. That was definitely the torn tendon and ligaments. This feels like it’s related to either the socket work he did, basically scored the inside of the socket to create scar tissue to line the socket because the cartilage is gone. Or the bone spurs that he removed. He also said he removed part of another bone that had some abnormalities. Did not expect to still have these pain issues 5 months later.
The shoulder work I did today is the first direct shoulder work I’ve done, and it was mostly just with the bar. The tire flipping, stones and stuff don’t hurt at all, today’s workout kinda hurt. I’m a little sore this evening. It’ll be a few days before I try that again. Sled dragging tomorrow.

The tire flipping has to put a lot of strain on you shoulder as does clutching them heavy stones to your bossom. Good workout.

I guess your arms are down by your sides with tire flipping, which is why you can do it. Things like MPs seem like a total impossibility. Pressing is scary, too. And crazy things like hanging the laundry on the line just exhaust my shoulder. I have some pain, but nothing like you describe. If my shoulder tires, it’s my biceps tendon that tends to burn. But even that is dissipating. I do have one spot that I can precisely locate where I have sharp pain on occasion. I believe it’s where one of the anchors is fixed in the socket.

Overall, I can’t complain. I’ve never been strong in the upper body. In fact, probably on the weak side. So I don’t expect too much in the “comeback.”
