Thought for the day:
I must be getting old, I find this embarrassing, especially after just finishing a book on the battle of D-Day.
It was bad when I went to Basic; you had fat privates, privates who looked like they never played sports and then you even had some who complained to the 1st Sgt. about having to do push ups.
We were told we were not allowed to eat any of the junk food in the dfac but then our DS’s got into trouble because they technically weren’t supposed to keep us from eating whatever we wanted. We didn’t get stress cards, and I thought that was a myth, but someone I served with who went to Basic around the same time as I, said his DS’s handed them out.
I can’t believe it has gotten worse. I do sometimes think that maybe for some MOS’s who cares about physical fitness or things like marksmanship. But at the same time, seeing a fat ass in uniform is embarrassing. I will say, I never saw a fat Marine.
Yes, I agree, very embarrassing for the Army, and, based on my experience in Kuwait and Iraq, the Air Force has an even greater problem. IMHO , the shift to only specialized units doing the actual fighting has caused a massive rift between MOS’s. It’s like if you are in logistics, transportation or cyber warfare, you don’t have to be in shape. And you are right, I have never seen a fat Marine, either on FOB’s or embassy’s.
I don’t spend much time on base lately and had not seen this Air Force trend. That, and all rest, are embarrassing as hell.
Please tell me WTF a stress card is?
That sounds like a note from teacher to head to a safe space, which too is a ludicrous thing don’t we think?
When I was active, we weighed monthly. If we were within ten pounds of maximum we would be put on a “fat boy program” that compelled us to drop it. I thank God never got within 20lbs of it. The program looked like an enormous pain.
Yet of all branches the USAF has the best chow.
I spent some weeks at a base that was voted best in AF and it was SO good I got up 45mins early, so 0300, to go get the breakfast in me. Good news is I burned it off easily back then.
Our entire country really needs to get a grip on the issue. E.g., making TV that includes “1000lb” in the title describing the human subjects.
I am not being hateful because I was once 180lbs overweight. But this person I saw, it no shit gave me a bad dream for a sec. She, in the whole of her head, no shit looked IMO like a literal in the barn sow pig. It is very sad, and it’s definitely indicative of how spoiled Americans are. There’s plenty of countries sans morbid obesity problems because the poor little bastards either have little access or little money to buy that much food. Plus most do more physical work and activities than Americans.
We’ve created entire industries around our unneeded creatures comforts.
We don’t NEED for instance, HVAC, soft reclining seating, comfy adjustable beds with apps, electric, TV, internet, cellular and so on. No need. It boils down to money, money to buying comfort well above need.
Let’s just say this man feels the average citizen now could not survive very long without the things I listed. I mean they would die. Take Average Citizen, drop him in a remote area, no dangerous animals, and steady 75F environment, no storms. They’re going to starve or start eating each other if any of them is fit enough to kill dinner.
The current state of fitness in our country is IMO untenable. Shame on us.
I never saw a fat Marine either. FTR, had I seen an AF soldier of equal of lower rank who was shaming the uniform I’d have told them straight up they were effin up the uniform for us all.
People just do not seem to care like they once did.
God I sound old It’s ok - I’m rocking it!
I did a lot of training on a weekly basis with the Marine Embassy Guards in Kabul and got to know them well. From my experience, the culture of the Marine, “that every Marine is a rifleman” has evolved into every Marine is a “warfighter”. So, it doesn’t matter what your daily job is, you are still expected to fight on any battlefield. A concept that seems to have faded from the other main services. What little contact I have had with the Coast Guard, I never saw a fat Coastie either.
That is key to battle and life IMO. Be prepared for any scenario u may encounter. And my Lord, always be fit and ready to protect those you love.

Continuing the series:
Article says “ Martial arts techniques don’t turn you into Superman. The streets aren’t kind to anyone, and knowing specific skills doesn’t always mean you’ll get out uninjured. ”
That’s very true.
What I’d add, and sorry I didn’t read the whole thing, is that the disconnect between the rules of sparring and the street is obviously huge.
It’s tragic when a person truly believes they are prepared then learn the hard way they’re not.
I’d point out that street fighting, like combat, is a no holds fight to survive not to win thing.
E.g., I’m a 53 yo man with a family. IF I must fight someone, I’m going to go full tilt animal and pull out every stop, ignoring any sense of fairness until I win or am unconscious. I’ll chew your face off to protect mine.
We should really consider Force on Force a last resort instead of the equivalent of a human cockfight.
I’m sorry, I don’t believe I responded to this part.
It is indeed the same. It was used to describe the condition before “CRPS” type I or II actually I remember being told by medical staff at a pain management Dr office.
I did indeed suffer terribly and most people have no idea just HOW bad it can be waking up screaming in a cold sweat, suddenly feeling like red hot spikes are going through, all kind of bad sensations 24/7, abs it is the 24/7 nature of it that made me feel like a trapped raccoon ready to chew it off. I actually considered using a power miter saw but a neurologist having informed me that even a surgical removal would not stop the pain kept me from trying. It was THAT bad.
Think for sercond about any body part hurting so bad for so long you’d literally consider cutting it off yourself. Yeh, some mind numbingly bad pain.
As for my bills, the Air Force takes care of me just fine no problems there, but I am pleased to hear anyone voice such a supportive opinion, thanks!
I think you believe this was a relapse or whatever. You are certainly permitted to think what you wish.
For my part I do not believe it was anything other than a Divine intervention. But I do NOT want to debate religion this ain’t the place I don’t think.
I bet we can agree I feel “heavenly” now?
Bet
Take care!
Doesn’t matter what caused it to go away
As long as you are feeling better.
Thought for the day:
I agree thanks
Hi everyone!
I’d like to wish everyone, especially fellow veterans, a very happy Fourth of July!
Be safe be well be blessed
Over and out
This is a photo of a Lancashire Fusilier taken just before he went over the top of his trench at Beaumont Hamel on July 1, 1916. This was the first day of the Battle of the Somme. On that day, the British suffered over 57,000 casualties.
Thank you. Captures the very essence of war.
*Thought for the day:
July 4th. Happy birthday , America. May you continue to survive. Freedom is never free.
It’s a still shot from They Shall Not Grow Old, a WW1 documentary. It uses colorized original footage and interviews with the soldiers who were there. They’re probably all dead by now but hearing some talk about joining the military at 16, even 15, makes you see how it was a different world back then.
Thank you, I will try to locate the documentary.
Thought for the day:
We are not a nation that is ready. We are fat and ripe for defeat.
