This is actually really cool to know! In Australia self defence laws are non-existent, if you’re mugged and use a tactical pen (or any object with premeditated thought to potentially be used as a weapon) to defend yourself you’re probably looking at jail time.
This however is an inconspicuous crayon @Beyond_Beyond
Let’s put 50$ down the Australian federal government sees this post and bans these crayons, associating possession with life in prison
No way… what? If you have intractable PTSD and some CBD tincture (Cannabidiol in the Treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: A Case Series - PMC) helps ameliorate symptomatology you’re barred from purchasing a firearm? But Xanax, klonopin, valium and equitable substances aren’t considered apt criteria for revoking a firearms license… We have a similar issue here, those on medical marijuana can’t drive. If they drive within up to a week after dosing they risk a 1000$+ fine + suspension of drivers license for 3-6 months. I’d understand penalty for driving impaired, but this isn’t the agenda here.
@idaho you should have a look regarding what’s happening in Australia. Victoria has locked down (stage four restrictions) over 20 cases more than fifteen months into the pandemic! Stage four equates to a 5km radius over ones home, no leaving home aside from the most essential of reasons, nearly all businesses shut down. It should also be noted Aus is still home to the harshest travel restrictions in the world, with citizens banned from travelling (seriously, you have more civil liberties if you arrive and you aren’t an Australian citizen; which you theoretically can do but it’s difficult to find a flight).
The penalty now for travelling to NZ, leaving NZ, coming back and quarantining in NZ before coming back to Aus is 5 years in prison, a 66,000$ fine or both (and a criminal record… lets not forget about that).
Our PM states MAYBE they’ll give us the privilege of travel by mid 2022… We really need a human rights charter in Oceania. I’d go on about this but I don’t want to get into politics and my vested frustration that we have only fully vaccinated 1.7% of the population. Rates should shoot up relatively soon, but nowhere near the herd immunity the US/Eurpoe may achieve soon.
This coupled with increasingly paternalistic rules and regulations being passed of which to my knowledge aren’t going through parliament (we’ve still shut down parliament over our "state of disaster) is incredibly concerning. The penalties for breaching restrictions are enormous fines or even jail time depending on the severity of the breach
I’m not anti lockdown, I’m anti resorting to snap lockdowns and draconian restrictions as our first line of defence as opposed to TRYING to create a “covid normal”. We still have STATE border closures every time a few cases pops up.
There is so much fear mongering within our media narrative, it’s almost as if those controlling news outlets are trying to rile everyone up, ultimately creating a hermit nation.
Sure, I’m happy we have no covid; but I’d be happier if we abandoned our “net elimination” mentality and tried catering towards vaccinations, accepting this will probably be an endemic. I’m not happy that I have to worry “will borders shut” if I even think about travelling interstate… and forget about seeing my family overseas. My grandmother who I was close with back when I lived in the USA is dying, I’m never going to see her again NOR am I going to be able to attend the funeral as funerals no longer appear to meet the criteria for one to be granted a travel exemption (gee… how compassionate)
