I have talked about this before, but, with the holidays, you always have an increase in burglaries and street crime . Take the time to make an assessment of your domicile.

another view:

VULNERABILITIES: Not one person’s home is completely secure from burglary or break in. It’s important to do your own home assessment and determine its vulnerabilities. Once you recognize your weakness you can implement enhanced security measures. You can see this door has an alarm sensor at the top left. With the door primarily being made of glass, a burglar doesn’t need to open the door to gain entry. If you have doors like this, look for glass break detectors to add to your home security system. Always look for holes in your security and make it a personal mission to fill them. .

I saw this yesterday and had to laugh out loud. When I was an FTO, this happened to me, so, I am posting this for all the FTO’s out there.

Question of the day:

Have you done a security assessment of your home?

For budget boots check out Oboz next time. I picked up a pair over comparable Merrells and I’m very pleased with the purchase.

Cool, thanks. Might splurge and get Salomon next time but I’ll check em out.

Thought Merrell’s and Salomon’s were about the same price?

Not boots, but my go-to around town and travelling set are a pair of Merrell Chameleon slip-ons (though I have to complain a little here, these are my second pair of them and somewhere in between the two Merrel changed the construction of the heel - if I don’t use a shoe horn to put them on, it breaks down the foam padding) (when’s the last time you used a shoe horn, or even saw one? It wasn’t easy to find one)

Also not ‘technically’ boots, but I was recently turned onto Altra shoes. They are zero rise and can be found in various sole thicknesses from minimalist to those super cushy orthopedic looking monstrosities. They also have a ton more room in the toe box than I have ever had in a shoe or boot, even in a wide. Currently rocking the Lone Peak 4 mid, which they classify as a trail runner. I love the fit and comfort of them, but I wish they would do a light hiker with just a smidge more structure to the ankle area. Going to snag a pair of their minimalist road runners when I get home.

Also have a pair of Salewa’s I wear around town sometimes, as well as Salomon’s. The Salewa’s have never been off road and never will - they are comfy enough for normal use, but would kill my feet if I tried actually hiking in them (too narrow). The Salomon’s are much better for off road, though they are still a little on the narrow side. Have to say my favorite for the woods and rescue work are an old pair of Rocky SV2’s I was issued before retiring. They are comfortable as all get out, and just about worn flat on the bottom. Might have to actually pay for a pair of them for the first time (which would be my 5th pair if you count the Thinsulated cold weather pair that are basically still brand new almost ten years after being issued). Wonder if Rocky can resole them? I’ll have to look into that.

And I apologize for the novels I tend to write on here.

My Merells were $75. The guys on the team wearing Salomons were paying @ $200.

Thank you, I will check it out.

Brother, all you information is good, keep on writing.

Thought for the day:

“Mark Twain said being a patriot is loving your country all the time and your government when it deserves it,”

We have discussed several times on watching your 6. However, in many places you simply cannot watch everyone: international and domestic airports, large commercial stores or even a sporting event. Crowds are always going to be around. Learn to observe as best as you can and try to always have your back to some type of wall or column, if possible. This lady would have been well served by standing against a wall waiting for an elevator.

Training: a light day. Bodyweight and band work.

Question of the day:

I got asked a question yesterday, I know nothing about and will not be able to research it today. So, does any know what type of security you have on cruise ships?

My first contract was a maritime gig for DON out of Hawaii. In talking to one of the deck hands on board, I’d say fairly low level. I had asked her how she got into the maritime industry, she said she had been security on board a cruise liner before joining the union and becoming a deck hand. I didn’t ask any follow ups on the security piece, but given how quickly she gave it up to be a deck hand (apparently better money but a lot more physical), I’d say somewhere around mall cop level. But someone else may have more or better info on that.

Thanks for sharing all the info! For work I wear 5.11 6" side zips. They’re comfortable enough for being on your feet all day. I’m just a firefighter, so I’d never have to run or chase or fight anyone in them.

My favorite water/kayaking/fishing shoes or boots are the Altama OTB Maritime assault boots. It’s like they redesigned Chuck Taylors for use in and around water. They have a great liner and are comfortable with or without socks. I’d wear them around town but on my big feet they’d look like clown shoes.

Lost a good friend and classmate today at the Naval Air Station shooting. ENS Josh Watson was a damn good man. First guy we have lost from the Naval Academy since graduation. Knew it would happen eventually, but would never of imagined losing a brother so soon.

My sincere condolences to you and your classmate’s family. I hate terrorists and active shooters, they take the lives of the innocent for no reason but their own twisted reality. The two Escambia county deputies who put him down were both shot, hopefully they will make a full recovery. Again, I am sorry for your loss.

Thought for the day: Pearl Harbor. Never, ever forget.

pearl

Today is the anniversary of the surprise [Japanese attack on the US fleet at Pearl Harbor] Sadly, we no longer even hold ceremonies commemorating that day.

We have raised generation after generation who take what we have for granted and vilify the sacrifices of our forebearers.

Every year there are fewer and fewer of out greatest generation among us. Let us always honor their sacrifices to keep America, and the world, free.

I’d also like to take a moment of silence for the 2402 Americans who were lost on that day, along with the hundreds more, who were wounded during the attack.

Ok, it’s that time of year when a lot of idiots drive impaired. My cousin told me OTP yesterday she’d just been to a funeral for a coworker’s teenage son killed by a drunk driver. So:

  1. Dont be an asshole and drive impaired
  2. Be extra aware and defensive driving now through January 2. I’d say Jan 1, but theres always stragglers…

An aside, if someone killed your young child by doing that, what would your response be? Dont post it for Gods sake, just consider it…and again, be careful all.

Hey guys, can you all give me an educated point of view on the shooting involving the ups truck?
Were the cops in the wrong for taking cover behind vehicles with civilians in them? Or is that part of training to find cover first? Thanks

I will try when the official report is released. Having been there in lethal force situations, I don’t do any Monday morning quarterbacking, since the MSM has a tendency to write rumor and opinions instead of facts.

You always try to find cover in a gunfight, standing out in the open is a sure fire way to get shot.
