The Tactical Life

Speaking of cell phones and potential loss of coverage, and this may sound like a stupid question, but when I was a kid CB radios were popular, is that something you would think would be worthwhile having?

Idaho, this is a direct request for your input brother -
EDC knife, and I need the AO type cause my dominant hand is FUBAR ok?!

This is what I plan to buy, but if you have a recommend, please do give it?
Thankya Sir!

[Background of the “why” = I used a S&W M&P AO knife for years, loved it but it finally f’n screwed up. Bought another one, it quickly f’n broke, pissed me off. Now I’m mad as hell at S&W knives, looking for something else but MUST have AO bc of my f’n hand & the more assist the better.]

REASONS I like the SOG:

  • Built in belt/cord cutter + glass breaker
  • Belt clip offset above hilt high enough that if knife is clipped inside pocket where I tend to clip one, it will help concealment a LOT.
You see my bros, the average citizen living in code “white” won’t notice while they have their face in a cell phone anyway, but when I grace the public with my bad ass, I don’t want anything to risk throwing up a red flag. It’s F’n tough enough dealing with all the attention when I go out of the house looking as good as I do, but you add anything else to all this man and well, ya know?! , yeh, you guys know

Yes, I admit it, clearly I’m full of it. I recently identify as a BS Distributor, among other things. I was born this way. Don’t hate me for being myself aight?!

Thanks for posting this. I have not used the VA, but, know plenty who have. Their stories of total incompetence are just flat out insane. The tragedy is, no matter what Administration is in charge, they all promise to “clean up” the VA and its worthless care and then, never follow through. The way our government treats veteran health care is a total national disgrace. Imagine being a veteran on a fixed pension and your recourse is the VA? But on the other hand, unless you are a veteran, no one really gives shit.

Brother, you psychic or something with that question. Last month, I was in a remote training location in the Utah/ Idaho area. Since cell phone coverage was very limited, almost all the permanent employees there were using CB radios. I didn’t know they were still around. They even had a base station at the range office and a 50 foot tower. I was told that on good, clear days, they were good out to 20-30 miles with a booster and that most of the ranchers were equipped and were glad to pass on information. Satellite phones were available for emergencies, but, not everyday use since those are around 8 dollars a minute. May be old technology, but, any back up is better than none.

Damn, I carry SOG knifes. Cannot go wrong with them, good prices, tough, and well made. I have a prized Emerson, but, don’t carry it much for everyday EDC, since I paid too much for it and I am too cheap to replace it, if lost:)))

"I often get told by people they want to train for this… but they want a guarantee on their success before they even start.

Success is never guaranteed. A lot of things are guaranteed but they aren’t what people like to hear. Hard work, pain, massive sacrifices, failure upon failure, more hard work.

Imagine walking into a boxing gym and saying you want to be champion of the world. BUT you don’t want to take a hit. Try it out sometime.

The worst thing in the world isn’t failure though. It’s never showing up and seeing what you are made of.

Who’s showing up today?"

@idaho - Looking for any recommendations you have for legit training courses which are worth the time and money for guys in our rarefied line of work. Would love to hear your thoughts and experiences on any you’ve shelled out money for. I have access to a few courses through my employer, but they are fairly limited in both number of courses and available seats for us.

Good to hear from you, brother. It seems these days , you can pick up a rock and hit some type of “operator trainer” no matter which direction you threw it. I am not rich by any means, so, I budget about 850 to 1,200 hundred a year for personal training , including travel expenses and hotel rooms. Since quality instruction is not cheap and its my own dime, instead of the USG’s, I really don’t want to waste it. BTW, some of the worst instructors I have ever had the pleasure of being around, actually were with my own agency.

Over the past 6 years, scheduling between leaves , I have spent my money on the following trainers, 3 former military and two law enforcement. I did not believe, I got ripped off in any way. All were professionals with different but educated views on their subject matter.

Thought for the day (1): I am stunned a law that makes common sense, actually passed. Good news for Florida firefighters.

Thought for the day (2):

This thread will be two years old this month. Pros? Cons? Keep it? Let it die?

My vote is definitely for ‘Keep It’ I enjoy it immensely, it has upped my situational awareness slightly and has me thinking a bit more defensively when travelling with my wife and girls, which is definitely a pro.

I personally see no downside to this thread and think that it has morphed into a helpful topic that I’d hate to see go away.

We recently had a similar bill come up in VA. Carrying on an Ambulance or Fire Truck wasn’t illegal, as I understand it, but there was a new bill in committee would have made it explicitly legal, provided they have a concealed carry permit, and the permission of their chief, board or directors or whatever.

We actually found out about it from an association email news letter that opposed the bill and called it dangerous. Those decisions should be made by our departments and agencies, not some cunt, or council of cunts who probably haven’t ridden a fire truck or ambulance in decades.

I got everyone I know to email them back and say “thanks for the heads up, but go fuck yourselves”. We also used their contact list to email and call the legislators and urge them to pass the bill. Last I checked it got out of committee and is sitting.

Oh, and please keep the thread.

I vote to stay the course.

Primarily, it’s the only reason you post on the site and you’re hands-down an asset to anyone who listens. I mean, I’m sure we all wouldn’t mind a training log from you, but I get how that could be an issue logistically.

Second, going strictly by the numbers, it’s the most active thread in the Combat forum (in terms of posts) and it’s in the Top 10 of all-time in terms of views. So even if people aren’t posting, they’re watching, reading, learning, and (hopefully) applying.

Thanks mang. I was already considering Pat Mac, I’ve heard nothing but good things about his courses…not sure I want to get sucked into his after-class PT, but hey, full effect right?

I’ve heard great things about Bill Rogers as well, but I want to say his course cost (before ammo, lodging etc.) is already at the top end of your stated budget. He’s not too far from me, so he’s definitely on my short list at some point.

And, yes, let’s keep this thread going. I’ve definitely seen some stuff on here that I took on board, and I’ll continue to try and contribute when I feel I have something to add.

I should pony up for a Massad Ayoob course. I’ve read several of his books and I think he’s based pretty close to me.

And yes let’s definitely keep the thread going. Where else can we talk bar fights, flashlights and guns?

I also agree this thread should keep going into eternity. Not a lot else in combat this last who knows how long.

There is a wealth of food for thought coming all the time, thoughts for the day and more hands on applicable stuff.

Thank you, glad it has provided some benefit. As PatMac says: you are the agent in charge of your family’s security detail.

Let’s hope it will get out of committee, but, you are fighting a very blue state.

Thank you.
