flavadave is totally right, America has always been a materialistic society that places value on what you got because thats ow you obtain status here whereas in other countries theres royalty and status, like in another country you could be broke as fuck but still be in a higher “class” over here its not that way. I learned about that in my American Culture class, chea.

The issue isn’t money and it’s associated status. The issue is worthless garbage that’s passed off as a sign of wealth, but only to those of low status.

So you go out and spend all your money on a 24" chain. But you are still broke as hell, and have extremely low status. In fact, you are now even poorer, and have even lower status everywhere except among other extremely low status individuals.

…dude, its not about spending ALL your money on ONE thing. its about having A LOT of things. so yes you would need businesses and a high paying job. the corporate world and the hip hop world are the same in terms of finance determining status except in one the means is to be a CEO of a company making bank and the other is to be a rapper, and dude havent you noticed how many rappers DO own their own businesses? like every rapper has a shoe, a clothing line, a club, a resturaunt, a basketball team, they all have something in terms of a business venture. that really wasnt a good example you provided.

Also,

Poverty in the US and Canada would be eradicated if all of a sudden people started bragging about how much more they earn because of their higher education, how many business they own, or how big their investment portfolio is. The problem isn’t the materialism, it’s how the materialism is directed at consumable goods that do not give the status they promise. This happens more and more all the time.

Everything you’ve said it correct except that it doesn’t support your position. What you’ve said doesn’t just apply to rap culture. You’re addressing American culture.

I hear rappers talking about their clothing lines, etc. all the time.

I’ve never heard any song where the person was bragging about their investment portfolio or higher education.

Even if you produce an example I’ll bet the house that it will be an exception and not the rule.

I would disagree with the idea that hip hop is dead, but there is definitely a troubling trend.
i concur

them shits are hot. how much are going for retail at the store? theyre $140 on pickyourshoes.com i kinda wanna get them now though lol but that shit is pricy for me. the checker pattern on the inside is killin it and you could easily find a million things to match that since those are definately 80s-esque (they are called arcade afterall)

but when you see them in person can you tell me why the site is saying

" *blue suede parts slightly discolored from manufacturing issues "

LOL at talkin bout whose hood is the hardest…i would probably say the hoods in Afghanistan and Sudan and Iraq probably have the most murders in their hood…A “ghetto” in america would be like a mansion over there…

I guess you missed the point of those posts. Let state it simply:

The OP is a white kid, from a white suburb, in a white area code. His starts a thread about the “latest urban culture in terms of music, fashion, or anything thats relevant to the flyer than you/swagger scene”.

But, the OP (like the guys that wear dogtags, but never have been in the military; or the guys that wear Affliction T’s, but can’t fight a lick; or guys that wear expensive shit, but don’t have a pot to piss in or a window to through it out of) is all style, no substance.

yea the haitian flags on every corner store and the chinese or vietnamese writing, and fact that theres 2 or 3 asian newspapers, and one spanish one at the T stop and that Malden has been called the “new chinatown” would lead you to believe it is a rediculously white suburb. the 781 area code also includes Lynn and Revere and seeing as im always driving through there i think i have a decent idea on the demographics.

either way, the color of my skin doesnt have shit to do with the way i dress. you obviously have no idea what youre talking about both in terms of demographics or in terms of current fashion/music. i dont know why im even bothering, after this point i could care less what you say in this thread as i already know its going to be retarded, no substance.

that reminds me of something i wanted to bring up but forgot about.

what do you guys thinka bout the statement that “hip hop is dead”?

IMO thats complete bullshit, all hip hop did was change, its constantly evolving and changing and thats all that happened. no one said hiphop was dead when it changed from 1980s 1 word raps and breakdancing to gangster rap, no one siad it was dead when it turned to party music in the mid 90s or when people started rapping about money like Jay-Z. Basically Jay-Z isnt Big Daddy Kane, and Nas aint Ice Cube. Theyre all so different but no one was like wow hip hop changed up now its “dead”, but all of a sudden people in the Bay made hyphy and the South started doing their own thing and basically after witty lyricism and stroytelling fell out for good everyone got their panties in a bunch. i think thats fucking gay and Nas is a bitch for getting all emotional cause no one wants to hear his whack shit. Right now people want to just rap about having fun, getting money, and looking fly, if you dont like it too bad go dust off your Tribe Called Quest vinyl cause hip-hop aint dead, youre just old.
It doesn’t matter if it is dead, alive, whatever. The only music that should be on in the gym is metal or inspirational 80’s music.

ummmmm…who the fuck is talking about gym music?

id like to give a warm thank you, to all the people who have decided to post in this thread about things completely irrelevant to the original topic.

some people love haters, i just feel sorry for them.

yeah, I had my swag on today.

Yeah… hip-hop is alive and well.

You really think Nas is wrong about it being dead? There are only a handful of artists I respect as Rappers these days. If you think that is where hip-hop is meant to go then… wow.

It may not be dead, but it’s dying.

its not dying…this is what i dont get hip hop started out as party music, then progressed into being about peoples struggle and a form of expression against opression. there are plenty of artists out there at the moment putting out quality, off the top of my head terminology, saigon and joell ortiz.

Live781,
Cool ass thread idea. I’m not so young anymore, shit, forget old school rap, I’m from the ancient rap era. But I like seeing what you young guys are listening to, and I’m looking forward to checking out some of those tunes.

alot of people rag on soulja boy but honestly what the fuck do you want a 16 year old to be rapping about? He knows he isnt gangsta, its obvious by his frame he aint going to be knocking heads off, he isnt really old enough to probably grasp what is really going on in the world…so whatdo you expect from a 16 yr old?

also doesnt anyone else find it amazing that a 16 year old was able to make it to number 1, through myspace? honestly I respect what he’s done and watching drunk girls try do the dance in heels is probably the highlight of my week
