Poverty. Studies have shown that poor kids do better when they go to schools in wealthier areas and wealthier kids do worse when they go to schools where most kids are poor. So if you are making a middle class income and notice that your town is declining and more poor people are moving in, move if you have kids but the children of those poor people will bring the quality of education down. I’ve worked in schools where they had these kinds of demographic changes and the kids whose parents didn’t want to move, despite having the means, suffered.
My parents always said, “I can’t control my kids, but I can control who their peers are.”
I think many parents do not understand just how much influence their kids’ peers have. You need to be vigilant. I know with me and my wife, we always got to know the parents of our daughter’s friends.
My kids will 100% be in the best private schools.
The cost is pretty outrageous, but the payoff is as well.
It might sound wrong, but it’s about who your kids won’t have as classmates as much as who they will have. If parents knew the truth about some of the kids in their kids’ schools, they would be horrified. I speak from firsthand knowledge, and you have students who are violent, sociopaths, sexual predators, rapists, psychopaths, etc. I can’t get specific because it’s privileged information but I would not let my kid attend public school.
My wife has taught 5th grade for 16 years in the public school system. I am well aware of what goes on. Exactly why my kids will never see a public school and why we have a private vetted sitter that costs about 5X the amount of an average daycare.
There have been numerous serious instances of violence or threats of violence they have tried to sweep under the rug on a certain demographic of kids going against their stated published policy that I have called them out on publicly and made it public. The superintendent of the schools in my area always dreads my calls, but he takes them ![]()
My uncle teaches in a rougher suburb of Minneapolis. 5th grade. He supervises during recess. He has caught 5th graders smoking weed and cigs.
@twojarslave You’ll love this.
(@tlgains Just in case you can stand to listen to a racist guy from a racist network.)
Thanks for sharing this with me, this makes me livid. Why would the college board create divisive nonsense!!!?? Stupid liberals!! Why can’t it just be history!?!
I’m guessing you’re being facetious, but you’ve actually got the gist of it.
I’ll re-state my question from above.
Would you want an “expert” in Klu Klux Klan ideology who actually believes in Klu Klux Klan ideology teaching history of any kind, anywhere?
If not, why do you think the public should enlist the expertise of avowed Critical Race Theorists to teach history? What is the benefit to the students compared to the type of African American history lessons people my age got in the 1980’s and 1990’s?
In my opinion, racist ideologues have no place in public education. The DeSantis administration is absolutely correct on this, just as they were with the Parental Rights in Education Bill, aka “Don’t Say Gay”.
Twojar I do not like CRT, it’s divisive hypocritical nonsense, I just wanted a true AP African American History course. How dare they even propose that, when you can search “African American/Black Inventors” on Google and get a list of people who need to be talked about more rather than some goofy anti-white agenda.
Instead of worrying about race, people who promote CRT should worry about their self esteem and inferiority complex if race lives sooooo rent free in their head.
There’s you’re answer:
No,
I do not,
There is no benefit
I agree it has no place
Then I think we’re on the same page.
It is very important to teach worthwhile and true concepts to children, no matter the subject, as best as we can. We owe it to them, and my generation owes it to the one right behind you. It is time for the boomers to step aside and play some pickleball in Ron DeSantis’ Florida.
As far as DeSantis goes, I imagine he’s on the same page too. We’re about the same age, he and I. At no point in our childhood or adolescence was slavery, Jim Crow, or racial discrimination taught as anything other than a national mark of shame for our society, and a persistent mark of shame for the people who still practice it.
I’m curious, why are you right-leaning? What life principles do you value/believe society should value?
I became right leaning after being an uninformed but strangely confident Democrat for my teens and most of my 20’s. I’ve read my Howard Zinn, I’ve drank from the fountain of Chomsky ramblings, I had Michael Moore DVD’s and was even a “round-em-up and ban-em-all” gun control advocate for a while.
My first nudge to the right came when I realized that nearly all of the arguments for gun control involved falsehoods and unhinged appeals to emotion. If gun control was such a great idea, why couldn’t it stand on simple facts and logic?
This line of inquiry cascaded through most of the assumptions I used to hold that led me to the notion that the Democrats were somehow the good guys. Republicans aren’t really the good guys either, but I think they’re starting to come around. I think they’ll continue to come around as Generation X moves into more power.
The core values are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, plus the Bill of Rights and religious liberty. And I almost forgot, Equal Protection Under The Law.
Thats where a lot of people lose the plot.
Pursuit /= Achievement
African American history is American history. American history includes the issue of slavery, the abolitionist movement, the Civil War, the Reconstruction, Jim Crow, the Northern Migration, Civil Rights, etc.
If it was possible to get just the facts these days, my personal humble opinion is that it would be beneficial to include “just African” history in that course.
We have the Wakandans and woman kings for that.
They’re not real?
Theres a big nasty fact sitting in the way of that.
That would be that it was the africans enslaving and selling all of their fellow people Into slavery.
They were the primary producers of the entire market.
