Oregon promotes teacher program that seeks to undo ‘racism in mathematics’

A toolkit includes a list of ways ‘white supremacy culture’ allegedly ‘infiltrates math classrooms’

The Oregon Department of Education (ODE) recently encouraged teachers to register for training that encourages “ethnomathematics” and argues, among other things, that White supremacy manifests itself in the focus on finding the right answer.

*An ODE newsletter sent last week advertises a Feb. 21 “Pathway to Math Equity Micro-Course,” which is designed for middle school teachers to make use of a toolkit for “dismantling racism in mathematics.” The event website identifies the event as a partnership between California’s San Mateo County Office of Education, The Education Trust-West and others. *
Part of the toolkit includes a list of ways “white supremacy culture” allegedly “infiltrates math classrooms.” Those include “the focus is on getting the ‘right’ answer,” students being “required to ‘show their work,’” and other alleged manifestations.

The concept of mathematics being purely objective is unequivocally false, and teaching it is even much less so," the document for the “Equitable Math” toolkit reads. “Upholding the idea that there are always right and wrong answers perpetuate objectivity as well as fear of open conflict.”

An associated “Dismantling Racism” workbook, linked within the toolkit, similarly identifies “objectivity” – described as "the belief that there is such a thing as being objective or ‘neutral’" – as a characteristic of White supremacy.

*Instead of focusing on one right answer, the toolkit encourages teachers to “**come up with at least two answers that might solve this problem.” ***

It adds: “Challenge standardized test questions by getting the ‘right’ answer, but justify other answers by unpacking the assumptions that are made in the problem.”

*It also encourages teachers to “center ethnomathematics,” which includes a variety of guidelines.

Seems to me they’re trying to make an already difficult subject that many people/kids struggle with, mathematics, even more difficult by adding convoluted drivel to the curriculum.

I also struggle with accepting fully grown adults accept this and teach it
but then again, Portland exists

This is racist against blacks. It suggests that black people are intellectually incapable of finding the right answer. And this is something that could only be said in America. If you said something like this in a black African nation, they would kill you. These SJWs are so uneducated and unaware that they believe black Americans represent blacks around the world. You know what they call an African American in Africa? An American. In fact, these SJWs see a poor black person in the inner city and see all blacks. The majority of black Americans are middle class. The most successful immigrant group in American at the moment is Nigerians I believe.

The person who said this did not major in math. I would love to see us take this approach in engineering and see what our bridges end up looking like.

most of the woke agenda is a clear display of the “soft bigotry of low expectations” - this is just one brick in the wall

They would be a little wonky, which is a portmanteau of “woke honkey”.

And named after George Floyd.

As a professional engineer ill tell you that if you give a project to two different engineers (building, bridge, site plan, etc) you will get back two different plans. Every time.

In engineering there are different ways to solve problems, and different way to get to those solutions. Yes, there is only one correct answer to simple math problems, but thinking there is always one solution to every real world problem leads to shitty engineers. In many cases the most effecient design is not constructible or has other limitations so another design is the better solution.

Also, none of us actually read the program so we are just inferring what we think will be in it. It could be mostly focusing on word/story problems, and not simple math equations. It would be kind of interesting to see what the program actually promotes to teachers.

That isn’t what they are talking about. The fact they use the term white supremacy tells you these are not educated people and don’t deserve to be taken seriously. They seem to not know the contributions of Indians, Chinese and Middle Easterners to mathematics.

I too think its an aggressive stretch to start injecting social issues into middle school math curriculum
but, I would be interested to see what the program actually involves and teaches. I bet there is some good stuff to take away from it, even if other parts are trash.

When talking about “white supremacy” I would bet they are talking about how the standard curriculum in american schools teaches math the same way. Take multiplication tables. There are numerous ways to think about them, and cultures all over the world do it differently (Middle Eastern mathematics | 3010tangents), but most public schools teach it, and require students learn it one particular way.

Here is a quote from the toolkit:

Identify and challenge the ways that math is used to uphold capitalist, imperialist, and racist views.

Yes. They do teach kids math differently in some countries and if someone does it better, we should adopt that method (we already do this). The thing is, Americans who are from a minority group are still Americans and since culture is not genetically transmitted, they are culturally American. Thus, the idea that a black American can’t learn “white” math because in Nigeria they teach it differently is stupid.

The problem in this country is that what people call white culture is really American culture. This is why they look at everything as a manifestation of white supremacy as if the ancient Greek mathematicians were thinking about keeping black people down when they were developing math.

Also, the assumption that poor black students having difficulty in math is a sign that all blacks have difficulty is racist. These morons seem to ignore the poor part because they are unaware that most blacks are not living in poverty. To them poor and black go together. If “white” education is so bad for blacks then why do so many black parents want to have their children bussed to white majority schools or have vouchers to send their kids to private schools?

Im saying that with a subject like math, the ability to teach a concept multiple ways is really helpful to students- black, brown, and otherwise. The egyptian method of multiplication tables might help white as snow Sven, and make zero sense to Achmed. But, giving teachers access to multiple methods of teaching is a good thing IMO. Different methods are not better or worse, they are just easier to pickup and understand to different people (regardless of race or gender).

Saying that the method tought in public schools for 100 years is the ONLY acceptable method is stupid
and that, i believe, is what they are saying is “white math”.

When i was in college i relied on my TA’s to literally tutor me through every single calc assignment and test prep. I had one TA from China for Calc II who didnt really speak english, and at first he really struggled to tutor me on a particular concept we were learning. At some point he gave up trying to explain the concept the way my proff was teaching it, and explained it the way he learned it in China and it made waaaaaay more sense to me. That chinese method of looking at the concept made way more sense to me than the traditional method taught in american academia (AKA the white method to folks interested in putting social labels on everything).

What im saying is maybe you have a problem with the social labeling of this stuff, and not the actual concepts behind it.

I have a problem with the racist assumptions and agenda by the supposed antiracists.

The idea that black kids have difficulty because they are black because math was not only created by whites but was created to support white supremacy is racist and historically inaccurate.

As far as the actual teaching, schools have already been addressing how different learners have different needs. The only thing new these people are adding is their neomarxist and intersectional agenda. The funny thing is, they have an issue with capitalism yet get money from Bill Gates.

Oh, come on. Most people love their pets. Are you trying to say it’s wrong that they consider an entire race of humans to be their pets?

Jesus, take the wheel.

What the hell did I just read?

Swalwell said calling witnesses wouldn’t have changed Republicans’ mind on voting to acquit Trump on the charge of citing Jan. 6’s riot at the U.S. Capitol, even if the witnesses were “God herself.”

That was all you had to say. Can anyone explain the logic of making Swalwell the house manager for impeachment after he got honey trapped by a Chicom spy?

Was it his noted capacity for flatulence? Surely he wasn’t the best that could be mustered.

I believe children have enough confusion in their lives to deal with, however, there are those out there working hard to fuck them up.

A University handbook encourages staff to adopt gender-neutral language, call fathers the ‘non-birthing parent’

Staff are told to acknowledge the mistake and correct themselves if they fail to use inclusive language.

Staff at the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra, Australia, have been encouraged to ditch the terms “mother” and “father” with the hope of being more gender-inclusive.

*ANU’s Gender-Inclusive Handbook has requested **fathers to be referred to as the “non-birthing parent” and the term “mother” replaced with “gestational parent,” when discussing childbirth. ***

“While many students will identify as ‘mothers’ or ‘fathers’, using these terms alone to describe parenthood excludes those who do not identify with gender-binaries,” the handbook stated.

The handbook also recommends using the terms “breast/chest feeding” and “human/parent’s milk”, instead of “breastfeeding,” and “mother’s milk” to describe lactation.

It cites a 2019 study by researcher Lauren Dinour, who said that "heterosexual and woman-focused lactation language
can misgender, isolate, and harm transmasculine parents and non-heteronormative families." ( don’t really know what this means and not going to waste the time looking it up.)

“This non-gendered language is particularly important in clinical or abstract academic discussions of childbirth and parenthood, both to recognize [sic] the identities of students in the class, and to model inclusive behavior [sic] for students entering clinical practice,” the handbook added.
