Sounds like she was intending a message deeper than literally “white lives don’t matter”, which she expands upon.
It’s a double standard for sure. But white supremacist related acts don’t get any benefit of the doubt, while the other side does get it. That’s life… The underdog gets rooted for and gets the benefit of the doubt, and the favorite gets rooted against and gets no calls b/c they shouldnt need any.
If i was Oxford, id keep her, but make here release a statement fully expounding upon what she meant. Obviously her tweet was meant to be provocative and gain attention… so now that she has the attention she should be using it to make her point clear… otherwise her tweet makes her (and the university) look shallow and bigoted, instead of thoughtful and progressive (however misguided you think her argument to be).
I suggest you contact some Icelanders and file a restitutions claim to Tayyip Erdogan, al-Sisi, king Mohammad VI and whomever controlling Libya now. After all, the wrongs of slavery must be righted.
Which is far less than many people have been defenestrated on.
But that’s not what we’re discussing. A Burnley fan had a plane fly ‘white lives matter‘ over a stadium which =/= white supremacy.
They cancelled a talk with Jordan Peterson for being photographed with someone. This isn’t bravery, it’s cowardice with a political bent.
I’m not asking for her job, for the record. I’m asking her to be held to her own standard, and she won’t be. It’s hypocrisy of the highest order, and I won’t abide it.
Let her make her case, of course. But she would throw people under the bus for far less if they had the wrong politics, and I’m a big fan of making people play by the rules they set.
We did, they sent us a smiley face emoji as a result. We’re not sure how to value it, but we have a parliamentary committee currently sitting to decide the actuarial calculation.
White Lives Matter is a white supremacist saying. At least over here it is. Whoever paid to fly that is a jackass.
Totally agree that it was the wrong move that JP wasnt allowed to speak. I’m a big fan of hearing different viewpoints, and think it is especially important for young adults to hear them. Especially JP who is very thoughtful and about as non-threatening as a healthy human can be.
Totally agree it was a jackass move. But the girlfriend was also fired, which is collectivist punishment, which is contrary to British justice.
He was being an arse, for sure, but why does he get fired when the mirror image gets rewarded? It’s bullshit, and that’s all there is to it.
And therein lies the rub. You and I can have a perfectly respectful discussion and we won’t be running to each others employers. I just wish the body politic at large could adhere to some consistent rules.
Edit: he was also a football lad, ‘white lives matter’ barely scratches the surface on racist football slogans and chants.
Let me add, I’m a British/ Irish guy, I don’t know how to approach racism in the states, but I know for a certainty that the situation isn’t the same as across the pond.
Maybe I should have my own hashtag: #contextmatters.
This is what happens when cowards are afraid to face and fight real evil. They have to make up pretend evils knowing full well there will be little to no ramifications.
They are afraid to confront themselves. They won’t give their house back to an Indian and go back to whatever European nation their ancestors are from, but they will take down a statue and vilify a man who has been dead for 500 years. They’ll cry about racism and slavery but still buy products made by exploited peoples. Lebron James can cry about BLM, racism, freedom and equality while his Nikes are made in sweatshops.
