I tend to agree that it is a psych condition. But is it a harmful condition in and of itself? Or is it society making them a pariah that is causing the harm? Or is it case by case? I don’t really see chopping your dick off as any more harmful than getting some double DDs put on the front of a petite women. They’re adults, they can make their own life choices. Doesn’t affect me.
I don’t think it should be promoted (I don’t think heteronormative behavior should be promoted either), but I think it should be accepted.
Do you believe in god? Because if you do, then all of what upsets you about this issue applies to you as well.
Hint: people who believe in god should tread lightly when talking about science and irrationality.
Like zecarlo said we allow and promote far stranger things. Letting people drink wine pretending it is the blood of someone they have never seen seems like an odd thing to allow.

I could never be a teacher. Half of the faculty at my school would be in jail if these standards existed in the ‘80s.

I have a couple buddies who are high school history teachers … their passing day to day stories are what keep me in the private sector - I would like to teach but not in today’s bureaucratic mess of an education system … big pass

True story from my wife’s aunt a couple years ago as she’s letting her 15 yo drop out of high school.
“If these stupid teachers can’t motivate my son to want to learn, why would I force him to go.”

Personally I just think everyone seems to undervalue the whole diploma thing.
What’s this country coming to when we expect parents to motivate their children to want to learn. That’s obviously the system’s job.
