I’m always amazed at tourists who think it’s safe to get close to a moose/bison/elk to take a picture, just because they are in a national park. Maybe it’s the fact they won’t be eaten by the animal after it mauls them to death that gives them a sense of security?
I am too, especially with animals like bears that are known killers.
Instagrammer “oh look! A bear! I’m gonna get a selfie!” as hash tags start dancing in their head.
Bear “oh look! A squeaky toy! I hope this one doesn’t have those weird squishy things in its chest like that last one.”.
Had one gal in Yellowstone that put a bison calf in her hatchback because it, “…looked cold.” I can’t even imagine being a Park Ranger at that point.
How…why…huh?
I read a story a few years back where a young mother put honey on her infant daughter’s head hoping to get a picture of a bear licking it off. You can imagine the tragic end to that story.
I hope to God this is some folklore meant to warn people from doing that and didn’t ACTUALLY happen (though I can imagine some young, naive mother DID do this – and this is why it’s important to really illustrate that Winnie the Pooh is NOT a real bear. A real bear will literally rip your face off).
Sorry, guys…I had to put this in the Stupid Thread.
Roger stone has been indicted.
I have always felt that the “smart” thing for WikiLeaks and the Trump campaign to do was to hack both the DNC AND RNC…and at least put up the facade that Trump was hacked too…to not make it all look so freakin’ obvious.
They could have even leaked flattering things about Trump…as long as they could say they were also hacked…
Pride and Power…always has been a terrible mix…and makes people do stupid things…
I dunno man, I hope it’s fake. It makes me sick just thinking about it.
That’s nothing compared to Mont Blanc. While visiting, I was nonplussed to see a line of French gendarmes blocking one of the ascent routes during a near whiteout snowstorm conditions and the locals told me how they’re pissed that during adverse weather conditions they have to patrol round the clock to keep Darwin’s award candidates from climbing the mountain. Allegedly they focus on stopping families with children from climbing, while lone climbers do get through and very frequently perish.
From Wikipedia:
The Mont Blanc Massif averages nearly 100 fatalities a year. A published estimate suggests there have been 6,000 to 8,000 alpinist fatalities in total, more than on any other mountain.
The record for the youngest person to climb Mont Blanc was set in 2009 by 10-year-old Asher Silver.
In July 2014, an American entrepreneur and traveler Patrick Sweeney attempted to break the record with his nine-year-old son P.J. and 11-year-old daughter Shannon. They were caught in avalanche, luckily escaped death and decided not to pursue their attempt.
In August 2014, an unknown climber with his 5-year-old son were intercepted by mountain gendarmes at 3,200 metres and forced to turn around.
On 5 August 2017, 9-year-old Hungarian twins and their mother were rescued from 3,800 metres by helicopter while their father and family friend continued their summit attempt
It’s gotta be hard when the last time a person was “relevant” was when they were an 8 year old playing a 6 year old.
Time to move.
I doubt it’d hold up in the Courts … seems like a direct violation of the 4th
On the other hand, is this lady a fucking lunatic? Is the person who drafted that legislation a lunatic?
Without a doubt.
This is pretty much common legislature in all European countries. Since the introduction of the program it had a dramatic effect on first-month mortality rates among newborns.
Personally, I found it extremely helpful when our first child was born - the nurse uncovered a small infection on the bellybutton before it fell off which we’ve resolved with simple antiseptic spray per her guidelines. We wouldn’t know how to spot initial signs of infection under the bellybutton bandaging and we’d end up in a hospital.
Honestly, I get the ideological objections but there are other areas where one has to fear government overreach more.
Makes sense. Could’ve aborted that fetus three days ago but, since you didn’t, the government now has to ensure your baby’s safety.
Well, better that that obsessing about what happens in a woman’s body from the first cell mitosis only to lose all interest in the well being of both the mother and child immediately after childbirth.
Or the social worker put some harmless stuff on your baby’s belly button just in case.
Social workers in the US put children into abusive situations every day. It’s comical how many “foster parents” are just doing it for the benefits and neglecting the children. These are the same workers who’d be doing the well visits. We have a shortage of doctors/nurses/nurse practitioners already. So it’d be some unqualified burnt out government employee who sees horrifying situations on a daily basis telling you how to nurse the kid or burp them.
Add to that there’s a huge push against home schooling (even though it has better test scores than public schools) it’s just a power grab. The lefties don’t want people thinking they can raise their own children without big brother.
“In Oregon, in fact, children in the foster care system are abused at twice the national rate. One wonders how a state that can’t handle the children currently in its care could possibly manage to surveil an additional 40,000 children per year, let alone pay for such a program (answer: it can’t).”
That’s okay. We have abortion doctors who are willing to kill the baby even after it makes that magical trip through the birth canal that changes a POC into a person.
Your insinuation that the right doesn’t care about children is off (in the US at least). Conservatives give more to charity at every income level. Compulsory taxation and redistribution is not charity and doesn’t mean you care more.
