Which part of this was stupid?

What did he threaten them with? A gun, or an ass whoopin? Makes all the difference as to whether a taze was justified.

Two knives, according to the second(I believe) paragraph of the story.

Well… knives are potentially lethal force. 9 year old OG got lucky they didn’t go further up the force ladder.

We agree.

Ummm, the part where a 9 year old was tazed by grown men.

I guess they could have shot him, as Basement_Gainz mentioned; or they could have maybe had one officer distract the kid while the other kicked him in the back of the head in hopes of knocking him out.

If you get cut in the femoral artery it doesn’t matter whether it was a 9 year old’s lucky shot or Riddick that got you. You’re going to die.

Knives are lethal force. Full stop.

I get he’s nine, but there is really no good way to disarm a nine year old if he has a knife and wants to hurt you/someone.

I worked a summer baseball camp where an 11 year old took a baseball bat and started hitting kids and coaches. It took several of us to stop him and he did get taken down pretty hard.

At least he was tazed. Every other possible scenario (shot, kicked, etc) would be a far worse scenario.

You all are cracking me up this morning. This child hasn’t even hit puberty yet. “If he hits the femoral artery” come on… If two grown ass men that are trained police officers can’t disarm a 9-year-old then I don’t want to live on this planet anymore.

Maybe he hit puberty early. I’ve refereed Peewee/U12 hockey games where the players were taller and bigger then I was at 5’8"/200 lbs.

Sure, maybe. They haven’t released a lot of details about the kid other than he’s autistic.

A determined kid with a knife can do a lot of damage. See below example from the burg where a little mousy sophomore got 23 students and 1 security guard before they stopped him.

I agree with your sentiment. But I was just thinking what would police officers have done 75 years ago (before tasers) with a knife wielding child? Probably hit him in the arm with a sap or night stick… disarming him and likely fracturing his wrist. So the teaser is actually a better option.

A sophomore is 14-15 years old. This is a 9-year-old autistic kid.

Oh, I think 75 years ago the officer would have just snatched the kid up and took the knives, but even if he broke his wrist I think that’s the same, at best, as 3 metal barbs entering the skin and administering 50,000 volts. People have been killed by a taser. It’s rare, but it happens.

I just think it’s absurd. We’re talking about a kid still in elementary school.

75 years ago…the parent himself(I know, “her,” in this case) probably would have taken care of the issue because he wouldn’t be worried about having to answer to the state for the way in which he dealt with his own child. If the parent was incapable of dealing with the child…the child would probably have already been a ward of the state and in some facility in which he would not have access to knives.

I can assure you that police officers receive no training in preventing a blade from slicing open or piercing their body. My eldest just turned 10 this year. I can’t think of a way that my wife and I could take two knives from her without hurting her or risking serious bodily harm ourselves(that would likely be the route I would take if faced with the situation…but I would not expect to call OTHERS to deal with MY child and have THEM take that risk).

The reason I originally asked which part of this was stupid is that I wanted to make sure you weren’t talking about the parent who called the police to deal with HER child before I disagreed.
