I’ve had several people tell me they are trainers and I was very surprised. I have a habit of checking out people’s legs (not always for sexual purposes ) and all of the people who have brought it up in conversation had very unfit looking legs in my opinion. Not that legs must be huge, but you can tell if someone works them.
If I were forced to hire a trainer based on physical criteria alone I would look at their legs and ass, male or female.
In my mind the stereotypical trainer would look like this:
Male - looks like he works biceps and forgot rest of body, about 15% body fat.
Cocky. 15 years ago would be a junior salesman for one of those pyramid companies.
Woman - slender in the sense of having no lbm except her skeleton but maybe 18% body fat. Hmmmm… do implants count as lbm? Talks about “long, lean muscles” and would point you to cardio machines and colonic therapy. Aspires to be yoga clothing model.

Just curious, Prof. X, how do you explain Eric Cressey with your theory that anyone under 200 lbs. needs to eat more and get bigger or else they couldn’t have much to add to your experience/ knowledge? He was also a trainer for some time (technically still is although now he’s refered to as a strength coach). With your apparent attitude towards “guys who don’t even look like they lift” you could probably have been in the same gym as him and snubbed him because he’s only 160 some odd pounds. Sounds a little to much like judging a book by it’s cover…
And yes, I’m under 200 lbs. myself. For my chosen sporting activity extra mass is definitely not an advantage so the 175-180 lb. range works best for me. Of course, I can pull over 2X my bodyweight…[/quote]
First, I think everyone will agree Cressey is a great guy and knows his stuff… so that is NOT the issue here.
Given the progress and current size that ProfX has achieved, he can damn well pick and choose who he feels he may want to listen to, and for him, guys that haven’t put on serious mass don’t have a lot to offer him with respect to the goals he’s going after.
