I wasn’t talking about posting my kid up on FB. I was talking about bragging… verbally or in text.
Humans are social creatures. Self-disclosure helps people to build networks and strengthens bonds. Life is better when you have people to share it with. That is a good thing.
BUT - It is interesting to realize that talking about ourselves, or to put a negative connotation on it “bragging”, is fairly hardwired as a reward. And when you put it in a list with money, sex, and food it sounds a lot like a list of areas where people can really get out of balance. Think greed or constant consumerism, infidelity or addiction, gluttony and often obesity, and pride…sounds like a list of the seven deadly sins. Interesting that the same part of the brain is involved.
I am curious about how much social media actually changes behavior. For example, I wonder how many people do things they wouldn’t otherwise do because it makes a good photo op., or because it will be cool to tweet about it.
I used to update my status to say I was unavailable for drinks because I’d be busy returning videos.
Some people actually though I was doing that. The vids I mean.

Returning video tapes has been the go-to excuse for maintaining my eremitic existence for years now.

Even though I have no moral qualms with bragging/egocentric outbursts etc.
I am merely amused that people tend to infer from a lack of bragging that I OR other people are modest! As opposed to ‘quietly arrogant’ OR more intrisically motivated Vs extrinsically motivated.
I also find, when it comes to to bragging & other immodestISMS, the FANTASY of bragging is often much, much more fun than the reality.
But hey, I’m an introvert…ambiverts & extroverts are often weirder than fiction to me!!!
