The Return of Even More Movies You've Watched This Week III

I wasn’t, but if it’s not your cup of tea, it’s just a movie.

I actively don’t troll, but try to practice radical honesty.

Glad your daughters enjoyed it though.

That’s fair.
It definitely was better than any recent Disney film, that’s for sure.

Oppenheimer. I came in with high expectations and maybe I wasn’t in the right state of mind, but I was soundly disappointed. I found it confusing, overly dramatic, and frankly boring. And I actually find the underlying story quite interesting.

The decision to liberally intersperse several timelines while also leaning heavily on hallucination sequences left me wondering what story was being told most of the time. Some Wikipedia research indicates that the story is overall very faithful to history, but it seems the movie tries to mix in some conflict to create villains and heroes in a story where that doesn’t really seem appropriate. The story is complex and would have benefited in my opinion from a more sober and dry telling that leaned into the actual interest of the very real technical and scientific challenges rather than so much political moralizing and interpersonal drama.

The star studded cast was mostly unlikeable with only Matt Damon really hitting for me. I also found the music to be loud and monotonous.

I recently re-watched Deliverance. It is a classic film about men getting away from the big city and doing manly things together in the woods. Watch it if you haven’t.

I don’t normally like it when old films get remade or entire franchises “rebooted”, but I believe the time is right for a modern remake of this 1970’s classic.

But which modern-day actor has as inviting mouth as Jon Voight had back in the day?

I think going with the all-female lead cast of the 2017 Ghostbusters remake would be a no-brainer for a 2024 reimagining of this beloved piece of American film culture.

It isn’t 1972 anymore. Women and people of color deserve more representation in film. Canoe trips aren’t just for middle age white men.

1972 was a good year for movies. Jeremiah Johnson also came out that year. A classic tale of abandoning modernity and opting for a simple (not easy) life in the mountains.

Definitely time for a remake. The titular role should definitely be played by someone who appeals to “modern audiences” - Dakota Johnson is the obvious choice as a 120lb woman with the correct last name already who could definitely take on a bear…

How about Cam from Modern Family?

I saw it for the first time about a year ago. Went into it cold. All I knew was there was a banjo scene and it was about a canoe trip. It’s a pretty disturbing movie haha.

That movie is absurd!

Down south boat trips go a lot more like this.

I’ve been camping on both the Chattooga and Flint rivers. Deliverance is closer than that picture.

But I want that boat now. Edit - changed my mind. That slide and outboard make me nervous.

Great soundtrack… Joy Division and Tears for Fears

He is a musician, he pays close attention to soundtracks. He turned me on to Whiplash too.

They don’t make movies like that anymore. Those guys actually had to act.

I think it the 2 years I have seen maybe three movies I actually really liked.

Renfield
The Menu
Top Gun Maverick (not a great film but just a good old fashioned action movie)

They certainly don’t

The First Omen
Immaculate

Enjoyed them both
