Seen any decent movies recently? @BrickHead
I don’t even know the last movie I watched.
You should watch shtisel
It’s a tv series about a strict (ultra) orthodox family growing up in Jerusalem.
8.6 out of 10!!! It’s actually quite good. Worth a watch if you ever find the time.
The Spy (story of Eli Cohen) is also very good.
There’s also the man in the high castle. Series covering a dystopian alternate future wherein the Germans won WWII.
Also the queen’s gambit, follows an orphaned chess prodigy. Not for everyone, but I find it riveting.
Could also give Chernobyl a watch (miniseries centred around the Chernobyl disaster of 1986. It’s a fairly hard watch though).
If you don’t watch films/tv, you can’t waste brain cells! That’s no good
It wasn’t that bad because the evil spirits were after Them, not me.
I did become a tree cutter a few years later. Two handed though.
Fauda is my favorite.
Could have been so much better. Unfortunately, they’ve messed up with the interdimensional travel plotline.
10/10, and the most faithful recreation of Soviet life in a Western TV show.
But… Did you watch shtisel?
Or the queen’s gambit?
I preferred the spy to Fauda, granted I only saw S1 of Fauda years back when it probably wasn’t appropriate for me to be watching (was 14y/o). Perhaps I’d appreciate it more now.
This film was great. I watched it with my wife years ago. The acting and cinematography was on another level.
This too.
No I haven’t. Frankly, I don’t understand what the fuss is all about except that it’s about the Haredim.
No I did not because I play chess.
Have you seen the pianist by chance?
Look at that rotten tomatoes score! Look at how ripe the tomato is!
If you want to lose brain cells might I suggest… I Frankenstein?
5% on rotting tomatoes. Absolute drivel… I went to see it with my father when it came out, hadn’t seen the critics/audience reviews reviews of the film yet. I left the theatres in awe of how bad it was whilst my father was pumped up “that was GREAT!”
Keep in mind this is someone who thinks battlefield earth was a great movie. Battlefield earth is widely considered to be one of the worst movies ever made. Now whenever my father wants to go see a movie, I make sure I know what it is before I agree to go see it… I’m never voluntarily sitting through another movie as bad as I Frankenstein or Jupiter Ascending ever again…
I watched the movie “The Life Aquatic” this past weekend. I had seen this movie around, but never gave it a chance. Kinda looked too silly for me if that makes sense. I really liked it. Had a bit of everything, and I really like some of the style choices. You could tell all the underwater scenes were fake, and that all the rooms on the ship were a set. The story was pretty solid. I’ll give it an 8.5/10.
All Wes Anderson’s movies are intentionally like that. I know that many people dislike his movies for being overly pretentious, but I absolutely love them.
Anyone seen the French Dispatch yet?
The gore SFX in Blood Feast were probably too pathetic and comical for even the censors to take seriously LMAO.
I brought that up because the director is pretty good and the horrific gore in the scene it’s infamous for is extremely well executed. But you’ve never seen me recommend it as a movie to watch unless a dude actually ASKS for something that will really fuck him up lol.
I think you watched that recent silly movie about the killer clown? Remember they did a similar thing to one of the chicks? IMO it turned out more comical than horrifying.
There are lots of things I look at when judging a movie. I thought that movie in which DiCaprio won an award for best actor was very well executed but dull and pointless. Also, the using “only natural lighting” shit was already done more than 10 years ago by dudes like Lars Von Trier because of some obscure new wave film movement or shit like that which I can’t remember who started. Probably was the fucking French.
The Suspiria remake was a fucking masterclass in filmmaking technique but the plot went full retard by the end so I couldn’t recommend it to anyone.
Antichrist was too pretentious to be taken seriously IMHO. Hence I ended up questioning the point of the more graphic scenes instead of being emotionally affected by then, The part where the fox goes “chaos reigns” did make me lol, though. I was playing with my phone throughout the movie so I don’t remember much of it.
The only movies I like from Lars Von Trier were Dancer in the Dark and The House that Jack Built. Dancer used the aforementioned “only natural lighting” style of filming with a camera that used FILM. That’s why the feeling of both uneasiness and authenticity were always present. You can’t do that shit with a DIGITAL cam or even one of the current, more advanced cams that use film like that DiCaprio flick (fuck I really can’t recall the title) did and achieve an effect significant enough that people will notice.
Dancer wasn’t a great film but it was pretty damn effective. I think it would have done really well commercially if it the distributers invested more in marketing and giving it a wider release. The entire cinema was completely silent for almost a minute at the end even though there was no music nor any sound effects in the last scene and the end credits.
The animal cruelty was what got to me because that was real. I was already mostly desensitized to movie violence by the time I watched it. The funny thing is I watched it with a couple of friends after a night out a a club in my late teens and I was the only one who knew it was fake lol. Even if the SFX was really authentic to them, how the fuck would a fucking snuff film be allowed to be released in the cinemas and home video in the first place? Who says kids are getting dumber these days?
I only watched a compilation of the gory parts and SFX was pretty good. I didn’t like the French New Wave flicks like High Tension and that one about the chick killing a pregnant chick for her baby at that time so I decided not to watch Martyrs. They bored the fuck out of me in between the violence.
But there was a recent one that’s not bad called Goodnight Mommy. Actually, I don’t even remember if it’s in French and it probably wouldn’t stand out if we compared it to really good horror flicks from the past but it’s passable if you need your horror fix. At least I didn’t fall asleep and I really didn’t anticipate how far they were willing to go at the end. That’s good enough for me nowadays.
What about the worst movies we’ve ever watched? @dt79 @BrickHead
Not the most repulsive or disturbing, but the most unwatchable… The worst of the worst. Perhaps it’s a snoozefest, perhaps the dialogue, plot or quality of the film is just abysmal and you simply can’t force yourself to keep watching. We aren’t taking “so bad it’s good”, we are talking “so bad it’s just bad”.
For me the list is
- Jupiter ascending
- son of the mask
- I Frankenstein
- fantastic four (remake)
- green lantern (walked out I got so bored)
- scary movie 5
- Bucky Larson: born to be a star
- movie 43
- jack and Jill
- birdemic: shock and terror
All so terrible they’re practically unwatchable.
Why play chess when you can WATCH people playing chess!
Joking… There’s this odd trend amongst kids and young adults wherein people seem to find satisfaction in watching others play video games or watch movies. I don’t get it … I don’t play video games anymore, but if I wanted to play a game… I’d actually play it. If I want to watch a movie… I watch it… Who cares about someone else’s reaction to the film… and why would I want to watch gameplay with some guy/gal narrating over the characters in the game.
It’s such a strange paradigm. “Brah, have you played this?” “Not yet, but I’ve watched this guy play through the entire eighteen hour game.”
WHAT… And there are people on YouTube/twitch cranking out hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars a year by doing this
With this being said… When the next batman game comes out I’m scooping that up in a heartbeat! As a youngin I loved the batman arkham games, I want that novelty/nostalgic sentiment…
So many I can’t even remember half of them… I’ll just name some and may add on more if I remember them.
She’s All That - First time I ever walked out of a cinema.
Blade Runner 2 - Pretentious, pointless and just dumb when you think about the actual plot they tried to distract you from with the nice cinematography and really good sound mixing. If anyone disagrees with me:
- Describe the fucking plot and WHY IT REQUIRED almost 3 FUCKING HOURS of extended shots of characters staring into space to get to the end.
- Justify the fucking horrendous dialogue. How do you take shit like that exchange about “a dead tree” seriously while laughing at that awful “I hate sand” line in one of those Star Wars movies?
Arrival - Maybe? Still can’t decide if it was comically bad or just bad. Holy shit you should have heard the mostly Chinese audience laughing at the end when the chick calls the Chinese general and convinces him to call off an attack with a retarded rationale.
Sudden Death (Van Damme)
The Jumanji remake - left the cinema halfway
Ghost in the Shell (live action version) - Only stayed because of Scarlett’s bodysuits and the high probability that Takeshi Kitano would get a scene where he kicks some serious ass.
The latest Charlie’s Angels remake
The Nightmare on Elm Street remake
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon - I honestly have no idea why people like this movie. I’d long regarded Lee Ang as a hack even before he made that. Don’t believe me? Go watch Hulk - the one with the guy who played Jesus in The Passion - and then we can have a proper conversation. And keep in mind the fucking movie cost 140 million to make in 2003 without taking inflation into account.
Any big budget movie by Zhang Yimou. Don’t believe me either? Go watch The Great Wall, the US co-production starring Matt Damon, and question the sanity of whomever decided to throw in 150 million bucks to finance it. Then imagine how bad his fucking China movies are when I tell you they’re like fucking 10 times worse. The sad thing is this dude can make a good movie if he really wants to. He’s not Ang Lee.
How can you possibly call Birdemic so bad it’s bad??? It’s a fucking “so bad it’s good” movie classic.
You’d have to include everything by Neil Breen and The Room in your list.
The dumbest yet actually hilarious film I’ve ever seen was Thankskilling.
“Warning! Boobs in the first second!”
I think I’ll give this a watch.
Wow! Talk about a blast from the past
I’ve actually seen this one!
Believe it or not. It was successful enough to spawn a sequel, “thankskilling 3”
That’s right… They skipped over number 2 because why not.
That’s what I’m talking about! Mindless, brain cell numbing, low brow ridiculousness. Watching thankskilling is 70 minutes of your life you can never steal back.
Fun fact, the first film was shot on a budget of 3.5K USD, sequel was shot on a budget of over 100K.
I didn’t watch the sequel, but I remember it coming out due to the advertisements associated with its release. Would I watch it today? Probably not…
For me, the most memorable scene (it’s been a long time) was when the college kids show up at the one girls house, the 2 foot tall turkey opens the door wearing the one parents face… And they somehow fall for it?
I havent written anything, but I have been following this topic.
Here is what I have seen the past 2-3 weeks
Dune - if you love sci-fi you will love the movie. It was a 10/10 for me. However my fiancee was not able to appreciate it. It is very artistic according to me, a beautiful movie made by pictures and sound and very little dialog. While the story is being well told. I have the book, but I havent read it.
Free Guy - if you love gaming it may be a movie for you. I enjoyed it, as it was something different. My fiancee also enjoyed it. A solid 7/10.
Shang Chi and The Legend of the 10 Rings - a 6/10 entertainment. My fiancee did not like it
Arcane - surprisingly good. Not a fan of League of Legends, but the story is good. I would highly recommend it to younger viewers and young adults and gamers. A solid 9/10, because an older audience may not like it.
No Time to Die - conflicting here. The woke stuff are a turn down. It was a good movie, but it could have been way better. The potential was endless and it was disappointing for me. So 6/10.
Wanda Vision - surprisingly good, unusual and interesting. 9/10 on my book.
