The Return of Even More Movies You've Watched This Week III

I didn’t get why he had to say so much stuff to convince his wife to leave if she already knew about his past. It should have been something like," It’s happened again. You know the drill." lol. Now, that would have been badass.

The Mitchells vs The Machines

Saw this on Netflix and it interested me, as it’s from a lot of the same people that made Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and The LEGO Movie — the former I haven’t seen yet but want to, and the latter I have seen and love.

Overall, it’s a fun movie. There were a couple times where I kinda rolled my eyes because the writers were clearly trying to say, “Look at us! We understand weird internet culture!”, and the jokes kinda fell flat because they played on very outdated internet memes, but there were also a lot of moments that had both my wife and I laughing out loud.

It’s definitely more of a family movie night kinda flick, but its goofiness is endearing, and I mostly enjoyed it.

My kids really liked this one and it was watchable for me too. Played on some old tropes of family dynamics too, but to be expected of a kids film.

I finally decided to watch The Exorcist 3. It sucked.

I understand it wasn’t supposed to be an Exorcist sequel but it doesn’t even work as a standalone movie. This is just another “fanboy elevating shit to something better than it is because they think they’re being edgy” kind of thing like Paul Schrader’s original Exorcist prequel.

Oh yeah, we know William Peter Blatty and Paul Schrader are good writers and the big studios fucked with their movies so the originals must automatically be complex, misunderstood classics that the studios think the masses are too stupid to understand.

Yes, we know they wrote the original Exorcist and Taxi Driver respectively but that doesn’t make them good filmmakers. The cinematic language is a different thing altogether. Has no one seen Stephen King’s Maximum Overdrive? Alright, at least King’s movie was fucking hilarious.

Just because the studio fucked around with a movie doesn’t mean the original is good. This movie was so boring there’s nothing to even write about other than some really good dialogue in the form of some brief, minor banter between 2 characters. That’s about it.

When Paul Schrader’s Exorcist prequel was released under a different title that I can’t even remember, it was obvious why it was almost completely reshot and released theatrically by the guy who made A Nightmare on Elm Street 4, Die Hard 2 and Cliff Hanger. Even though the theatrical version was crap, it turned out to be pretty entertaining in a “so bad it’s good” kind of way. The original was almost as unintentionally funny as the theatrical release but way more boring because the latter was consistently silly.

This movie’s scenes that were reshot were supposedly rewritten and reshot by William Peter Blatty himself. It was still so fucking boring as whole I’m glad they reshot them.

At the expense of committing heresy amongst fanboys who also probably think the Star Wars prequels were misunderstood masterpieces, The Exorcist 2 was more entertaining than this. That says a lot.

And, yes, I’d rather re-watch The Last Jedi than watch any of the prequels other than Attack of the Clones again only because of the copious amount of Natalie Portman ass shots in that movie. Come at me bros! Slip out of your Pokemon pyjamas and fire up the keyboards in your parent’s basements!

“Release the payload!”. Bwahahaha.

They new they had to keep the movie interesting somehow.

Loved the tight suit too.

Since you are into horror did you watch “Hold the Dark” on Netflix? I liked the movie but my wife hated it (she doesn’t like anything that moves kind of slow).

Nope. I’ll probably go watch it. Thanks.

It’s more of a thriller than horror film. Don’t know if it will be up to your rigorous standards.

I really don’t have any lol. I just don’t like boring shit. If I do write about and rate something, I try to do it as objectively as possible while providing proper rationales for them so others may find it useful. Other times I just rant but that’s when the movie really sucks balls. People don’t have to agree with me anyway.

Yup - watched it with my kids. We enjoyed it as well.

@dt79 I must be lucky - I’ve never met anybody who liked the Star Wars prequels. I hate to shit on a kid actor, but Kid Anakin was…special. Of course, he’s since been arrested multiple times and formally diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, so I’ll refrain from piling on any further.

An edit of phantom menace exists where most of Anakin and jar jar are excited out. Much better than the original.

I wouldn’t make the case that Jake Lloyd was a good actor, but I do think that blame for this is mostly on Lucas and whoever else thought they needed to cast a child. The role is basically written for a young adult and I would argue that episode 1 gets materially better if you just cast an adult and say Anakin is 18-20 in episode 1. Without changing anything else, all of his relationships work better, his actions and the actions of others around him make more sense, and the moral weight of the story is elevated. In particular, his romance with Padme, his friendship/rivalry with Obi-wan, and his guilt surrounding his mother, all central to the development of his character arc through the trilogy, are much better rooted if he starts the story as an adult.

I wouldn’t have cast Hayden Christiansen, though. Too much emo boy band, not enough action hero. Anakin should have felt dominant and like a leader of men. In short, Anakin was miscast twice.

The prequels are great stories with terrific actors trapped by George Lucas’ terrible writing and directing.

I agree with @silyak about the casting, but Jake Lloyd was definitely bad, and I’ve seen Hayden Christensen in other movies, and he’s an absolutely horrific actor.

Besides that, yeah - Liam neeson, Ewan Mcgregor, plenty of great actors.

The only other movie I’ve seen Hayden in is Jumper. It was a long time ago, so I don’t really remember how good he was in it.

It is baffling to me how one can start with such a good base story and just make awful content out of it. That bastard even managed to put Haden in the Return of the Jedi as Vader’s force ghost thing at the end.

I don’t remember his acting specifically, but I enjoyed the movie at the time.

As for what i’ve watching this week:

Peter rabbit season 1, in full
Peter rabbit season 2, in full

Overall good storylines, though some of the themes get a little repetitive and there are no real character arcs.

Peter rabbit movie

Not bad, not my top 10. An ok, if predictable, redemption story. Got a few chuckles.

Yes my nearly 2 year old reeealy likes peter rabbit.

For the record, the sequels are far worse than the prequels. For all their faults, the prequels leave the originals intact without undermining the characters or calling into question the meaningfulness of the plot and struggle.

The sequels, for all of their individual virtues, don’t form a coherent story and sabotage the original trilogy (arguably intentionally).

Do you count Rogue One as a prequel, sequel or branch off movie. I would say prequel as it is before A New Hope. I think that one was pretty good.

I will say I am entertained with all of the movies, but some are objectively not good.
