The key to enjoying the series is to believe in a world where Karate kicks everyone’s ass and local-level children’s sports shape our entire adult lives.
Maybe we can all learn how to coalesce around cycles of violence, retribution and 1980s pop culture references.
Agreed, I was hoping for a homage to cannibal holocaust. What we got was a significantly toned down, super boring, uninspired film that lacked both the wit and social commentary present within cannibal holocaust. The green inferno wasn’t “tame” per se, by modern horror movie standards it was quite brutal. It just didn’t hold a candle to cannibal holocaust and/or many of the 80s “video nasties”.
Cannibal holocaust certainly isn’t a film for everyone (referring to the uncut version), it’s exploitative, brutal, disturbing and incredibly bleak… But it does try to convey a point. Some will state it’s just pointless exploitation, I disagree
The hostel franchise weren’t comprised of particularly “good films”, but aside from the second film the first and third entries were suprisingly watchable… Better than the majority of the saw films.
Speaking of saw, we have another entry coming out. Spiral: from the book of saw.
Even though SAW 3D and Jigsaw sucked pretty hard you can bet your bottom dollar I’ll shell out cash to watch it in theatres when it comes out. TaKe My MoNeY
Regarding Green Inferno, I wasn’t even expecting anything comparable to what you’ve written pertaining to Cannibal Holocaust.
A silly B horror movie with lots of nasty gore and a bit of action with some black humor(intended or not) would have been fine. But we didn’t even get that. Instead, we got 1 nasty scene and a stupid scene with a chick taking a long, noisy shit that was suppossedly meant to be funny.
Even those zero budget Italian schlock knockoffs were more entertaining.
Only watched it and the previous 2 (?) installments because of Jigsaw’s ex-wife lol.
There’s actually eight installments. The newest release will be number nine
Even that one nasty scene wasn’t choreographed/filmed well.
Have you seen contamination (circa 1980). Italian Alien ripoff, quite gory in comparison to alien.
I would’ve totally been down for that. They could’ve gone full “troma” style, made it as “far out” as possible and/or made increased the gore factor to be reminiscent of splatter films like braindead (directed by Peter Jackson!), Bad taste etc. If you don’t know what troma is, think toxic avenger, class of nuke em high, sargent kabukiman, terror firmer, poultrygiest etc. It’s a rather unique brand of film.
They typically fall under the guise of “so bad it’s good” or plain “terrible… So terrible”… they’re almost always very crude/crass, I’d assume revenue made is independent of the eventual MPAA rating acquired given the nature of these films (most of them).
The green inferno was perhaps relatively tame in due part to avoid an NC-17 rating. The loose equivalent of that here is R18+, though 18+ films can be released in theatres. Companies tend to dislike mass releasing 18+ films though, they’re not nearly as profitable as M/MA15+ films (loose equivalent of PG-13 and R, though there’s overlap as M rated films allow the use of the word “fuck” many times. They also allow drug use, sex scenes and sexualised nudity… But not explicit violence/gore)
I meant the ones with his ex-wife in them. I think may have watched them all but I don’t even remember the plots or the order of the installments. All I remember was thinking “what the fuck is that guy from Picket Fences(old David E. Kelley tv show) doing in there” lol.
Nope. Will probably check it out. I’m in the mood for poorly English dubbed Italian schlock nowadays actually.
Like Zombi 3:
Almost zombified dude staggering on street covered in blood.
Dude walks past him and yells, “Hey! Aren’t you feeling well?!!”
I don’t understand/can’t follow the Zombi franchise. I thought Zombi 2 was supposed to be a rip-off of dawn of the dead… But there are a ton of films branded under the Zombi franchise that aren’t “zombie” films at all.
There was a horror film in 1980 called antropophagus: the beast developed by a guy named Joe D’Amato. There is one fairly nasty scene in this film, it’d never pass by today’s standards. In 1981 Mr D’Amato directed a quasi sequel of sorts to antropophagus called “absurd” but this film was marketed as Zombi: 6 Monster Hunter in the USA. How is this related to Zombi?
I wonder if absurd was actually intended to be a sequel. The first film had an alternate title “the grim reaper”. One of the alternate titles for absurd/Zombi 6 was the grim reaper 2… Perhaps that’s just a cash grab.
Zombie holocaust (1980), nightmare city (1980) and Burial Ground (1981) were all at some point released under the title “Zombi 3”… and Zombi 6 being released in 1981? That’s NoT pOsSiBlE.
When I think “Zombi” I just think about the splinter/eye scene from Zombi 2.
Recently saw the trial of the chicago 7… Mass protests, political divide between the left and the right and police brutality… Sound familiar?
It was interesting to observe Sacha Baron Cohen playing a non-comedic role, though his character does crack quite a few sarcastic quips throughout the film.
To clarify, was the first “Zombi” George A Romero’s dawn of the dead marketed under an alternate title or are we talking about a knock off?
Despite being uber low budget, B grade horror films… Some of them actually aren’t that bad. Take it for what it is despite (at times) glaring plot holes, terrible dubbing, dialogue descrepancies and watching can actually be quite enjoyable.
They’re no worse (and many times better) than the majority of campy, mainstream 80s slasher films.
This. It was co-produced by Dario Argento. He wanted it to be shown in the Italian market. The soundtrack is even by his usual band called Goblin who did the scores for most of his movies.
Dario Argento was quite a talented director, he was active during the pinnacle of the giallo film. I haven’t seen all of his films, my current favorite of his is Deep Red (esp the soundtrack)
Goblin also did the soundtrack to Suspria and the film I mentioned earlier (alien rip off called contamination)
I have few films on my list currently (el topo, the holy mountain, bad boy bubby, the greasy strangler and santa sangre). After these (so say in 3 weeks… Big into new girl yeet) I think I’ll start watching more Dario Argento directed films. I’ve always wanted to watch tenebrae, inferno and phenomena. I’ve already seen suspria, the bird with the crystal plummage and deep red.
If you want a good laugh, watch Argento’s latest Dracula movie. I can’t remember the title. It’s so bad it’s pretty good. Rutger Hauer’s in it. Mother of Tears is less bad but it’s still bad enough to be good. Asia Argento(the chick from that Vin Diesal movie Triple X) is so hot. So fucking hot lol.
Yeah, he even hired a dude from some death metal band to collaborate with this own frequent composer Claudio Simonetti for the theme song to kinda make his film more “contemporary”.
Well, I’ve been told I’m a rather eccentric character. My taste in movies accurately represents this. Weird is my bread and butter.
One of my favorite movies is “dazed and confused”. There’s no plot, it’s just a bunch of kids doing random shit after school ends for the summer.
Also Dani Filth founded cradle of filth. They were initially death metal… Then they were black(ish) metal, now I’m not sure what they are. Some type of extreme subgenre for sure though
