Think you missed that this appeared to be satire…
No I thought it was but I wanted to treat it as normal because I’m usually all about evaluating what the data could be telling us (see my posts from 2012 and 2008). I don’t feel like any of us are really talking about it and I have been meaning to have a post like that for a while.
I didn’t do it as much in 2016 because I didn’t know Trump as well and I thought Clinton was awful. I remember telling people when Trump won that were worried about him that I thought he would change. Stop the insane tweets, consider his words, be humbled by the office, listen to experts. I was absolutely certain of it and I couldn’t have been more wrong.
Not sure narcissists ever change.
I didn’t realize he had it that bad when he ran. Guess I always figured it was an act. I really didn’t know much about him before hadn’t paid a bunch of attention and didn’t follow either primary really closely. I was certainly surprised he was the nominee but everyone was. I still maintain that an advantage for him is initially no one took him seriously on the right. They attacked Jeb, Ted, etc the expected front runners. By the time they realized it wasn’t all an act and he had voters who really liked what he was saying it was far too late.
If (and I’ll say right now it’s a big if just so it doesn’t get thrown in my face) the blue landslide that has the potential to happen (based on states of other national races and the Presidency) does happen he will end up going down as possibly the GOP’s biggest mistake. They didn’t need him to beat Hilary at all. Any rank Republican had that. And with the results or 2018 especially at levels not just in the national races and perhaps 2020…well I said many times Republicans might end up praying he doesn’t win.
But maybe he outperforms again. I’m not dumb enough to bet against it.
Agree. No party should be able to do it. At this point with deep learning, AI and big data we have the capability of completely taking the challenge on. Or, if you’re going to do it the old way, there is a committee split 50/50 between Dems and Reps locked in a room and told to find an agreement.
Districts should be split straight down the middle so all districts where it is feasible are 50/50 party line. Make the whole damn thing purple so people feel like their votes matter.
I’m aware it would be difficult if not impossible in places like NYC and LA, but I do feel setting this to a bounded machine learning project would be the best possible outcome.
First, Kamala isn’t what I would consider “crazy” as Warren or Sanders. She’s way too left, but she’s not a space cadet. She’s also ambitious, so she would very probably not want to drive too far left inheriting an administration that wasn’t her own while also knowing that a) voters didn’t vote for HER, they voted for Biden and b) she would have to defend herself for re-election, the one thing all politicians want more than anything else.
Second, there are in fact things stopping Pelosi. A lot of her middle road democrats would very possibly revolt if she did so unjustifiably. And very particularly, a lot of democrat voters would hate her for it.
Additionally, the process for transitioning duties to the VP is governed by a majority of the executive departments in the administration. I’m not 100% sure on this because my civics was a long time ago, but I believe this entails not only the cabinet but certain other heads. Pelosi has no real power over these people. They must send to the Senate (and sign), in writing, a letter detailing that they have determined that the POTUS is unable to discharge his duties. Pelosi doesn’t get to do that.
On top of that, if she decides to use the amendment powers to have Congress decide the POTUS is unfit they need a 2/3 majority of BOTH houses.
That’s not happening. I feel pretty comfortable with that. And, knowing that they need 2/3 majority of both houses, Republicans are going to be needing to be convinced as well as on the hook for their vote.
If they do, the country will suffer for it. And the GoP will have plenty of blood on its hands for aiding and abetting. They brought this on themselves (and unfortunately us), frankly, by having a short term mindset the same as those certain corporations that give up long term product and industry development for short term quarterly profits.
I don’t know why this is getting so much play on right wing websites. People are acting like the moment Joe wins they knock him out and Kamala takes over. That’s being said because attacks on Biden aren’t working. Kamala could very well become President just like other Vice Presidents have…but Dems getting rid of Biden right away because he isn’t the guy they want is just pure lunacy.
Quite successful at this move towards center in some respects… Except he did it in such a poor manner he alienated a very large chunk of people who would have been on board with a center move. And he’s got nobody to blame except himself for that.
I have ABSOLUTELY no idea why this is being played on repeat. The bar for permanent removal of duties from the president is EXTREMELY high as far as the Congress is concerned.
And there is no realistic way for the democrats to have a 2/3 majority in both houses this election, and I put the odds very low at mid terms.
Harry Reid opened the Pandora’s Box. Don’t know about you, but I certainly expected both sides to (continue to) take advantage of this if at all possible. They’re politicians, you expected a different outcome?
I was against Reid’s idiocy then too. Expected a different outcome perhaps not. Hoped for, yes.
Do you really believe either of these? People supporting Democrats would be bothered by getting rid of an old, white guy in favor of a woman with at least some minority blood? I don’t think the Democrat ticket would lose a single vote if the Party promised to execute Biden on November 4.
Are you referring to USSC justices picked? If so - whom?
If not, what more specifically?
One of the candidates is certainly making money from China.
Yes I do. It’s asinine that you think she could literally kill a man and not lose any votes or senators.
The context of my reply was in regards to the statement of belief that the Dems would pack the court, get rid of the electoral college (which I should point out has been discussed by BOTH parties for decades now, so is not new), or any number of many “everything is on the table” power plays that ntrojnky said would certainly happen if democrats got power.
I am not referring to the justices picked. As I said I like the justices. I am referring to their penchant for completely ignoring their own rules when it inconveniences them, and for forgetting that one of the absolute certainties of a democracy is that the “other” party ALWAYS COMES TO POWER EVENTUALLY.
This was one of the things that has long kept both parties civil and relatively collegial - they knew the momentum would swing eventually. This limited the power games played, the rule manipulation, and encouraged compromise because if you wanted to be able to get anything done when you were a minority in the legislature you wanted to build up the good will and be known for working with the other side. When you wage a scorched earth war for short term gain I don’t have any sympathy for you when you cry that the other side is going to do something bad.
I have sympathy for ME, and for the country and voters that are going to have to live with the shit show the other side is going to start. But I don’t have any sympathy for “your party” when said party was instrumental in allowing things to degenerate that far in the first place.
The GoP has thrown all that out. And it’s absolutely not an excuse that “the democrats do it too/Did it first/whatever”. If it’s not an excuse your kids could successfully use them it certainly doesn’t work for adults.
There are a lot of examples that have been talked about on this forum for years but these past 4 years have seen a number of them.
I don’t think SHE could. I think the Democrat Party could. And I would be stunned if they lost any Democrat voters. They may lose some “go with the flow” voters, depending on how they’re told to feel about such action.
At this point I’m starting to think the corrupt part about Biden is that he is paying Trump millions to work for his campaign. He’s hammering on Hilary again for some reason, back to saying Mexico is paying for the wall, and giving the worst possible amount of responses to Coronavirus. We’re months into this thing and he’s still saying a big problem is how much we’re testing. We should be testing less.
I feel bad for the people who are hammering his campaign advisors. Maybe they are dolts but unless they are telling the President to say these things (and I can’t imagine they are) what can they do?
Yeah but where did China get that money? My guess is Hunter Biden.
All I know is that I’d avoid any sets of stairs around Kamala were I Joe Biden.
“Nobody puts Trump in the corner!”
Except, of course, Trump.
I don’t envy those advisors one bit. There’s a reason most of the good people left the cabinet and chief of staff posts
So I am out at a local restaurant having a beer and watching some games and reading some journals and I have a table behind me with an ongoing conversation that is exactly a microcosm of the type of effect I see Trump having on GoP voters…
A gentleman is talking about the fact that he was a registered and dedicated republican up until 2016. Since Trump has taken office he’s been progressively questioning everything about the party, down to policy positions on the economy based on Trump’s behavior. He has flipped so far as to have joined the DSA last month (democratic socialists of America).
Extreme flip? Certainly. But this type of thing is not an isolated occurrence and is one reason why Trump has helped to poison the GoP brand.
This. Is. A. Problem.
Driving out a “Democratic Socialist” is a problem? Seems like a good thing, regardless of how he votes. Fuck him.
Must be nice to be somewhere The Rona has been eradicated. I’ve heard it’s still around, here. Every time I try to drink a beer, almost all of it either gets absorbed by my mask or rolls down onto my shirt and pants. Still haven’t figured out a way to drink with my mask on.
