I think this logic applies to both sides of this issue. I do not think we should overlook the BS antifa is pulling and continues to pull… and i dont think that we should overlook the large oversteps in federal authority that trump is mandating that could very easily become standard policy.
You say it shouldn’t be allowed. But admit that it was. And then say it isn’t worth the violence to not allow it. So it should be allowed? I’m confused.
Should white supremacists be allowed to burn the National civil rights museum because it isn’t worth the risk of violence?
If republican mayor decides he’s going to withhold local law enforcement as some white-nationalist/supremacists movement attempted to destroy a national monument/property dedicated to the civil rights movement you would really be here criticizing the use of Federal law enforcement to protect that property. Including arrests and investigations off that federal property as already allowed under federal statutes?
It shouldn’t be allowed. But will enforcing the law cause signicantly more harm than letting the crime happen? Thats a damn tough decision to make, and is made daily by the local PD.
We all agree that violent protests and riots are bad. Where we disagree is on the level of response that they require. I believe that the calculus should be “will suppressing the riot cause more or less damage (to people and property) than letting it continue?”. Every situation is different. Much more force should be acceptable to protect the Lincoln memorial than a random statue in a park in midland ohio for example.
Maybe i missed it, but Portland PD have been protecting that courthouse this entire time (which is one helluva job), right? not to mention, i dont have a problem with DHS spelling or adding to the portland PDs numbers at the courthouse… as long as they stay at the courthouse and dont perform secret street operations many blocks away. At that point they are no longer protecting the courthouse, they are policing portland streets.
Why do I suspect some sympathy to the message, or opposition to the current administration, is informing some responses here?
I don’t care if Obama, Clinton, Trump, or Biden give the order. I don’t care which monument it is. Or what federal property it is. That’s OUR property. OUR symbols. OUR institution. Use the vote if you have a problem with it. And if that isn’t successful. Use it again. Then again. So on.
So Portland PD has now (at least in large part) handed off protecting the courthouse to federal authorities it sounds like. Which means, they were the ones protecting it (valiantly) for 50+ nights in a row. So i dont know why your comparison is of local authorities refusing to protect federal property. Portland PD is now free to police the streets around the courthouse.
On Sunday, July 20, 2020, people gathered in front of the Mark O. Hatfield Federal Courthouse in downtown Portland. Hundreds of people stood blocking SW 3rd Avenue while dozens of others tampered with the fence around the courthouse.
"At about 11:35 p.m. people began climbing the fence and at about 11:43 p.m. people pulled down the fence allowing access to the area in front of the courthouse. Dozens of people with shields, helmets, gas masks, umbrellas, bats, and hockey sticks approached the doors of the courthouse. Federal law enforcement came out of the courthouse at about 11:50 p.m. and dispersed the crowd. "
"Over the next two hours hundreds of people wandered around downtown Portland many regrouping on SW 3rd Avenue in front of the courthouse, in the adjacent parks and around the Justice Center. At 1:31 a.m. a person climbed onto the northwest corner of the Justice Center to tamper with a security camera. At 1:34 a.m. people lit a fire within the portico in front of the federal courthouse. Others gathered around the fire adding wood and other debris to make it larger."
I honestly don’t know what point you are trying to make with that account? I agree that the rioters actions are bad. I have no problem with the actions of DHS described here.
Exactly how patient is federal law enforcement supposed to before they leave the property to try to detain, investigate, and carry out arrests as they’re legally entitled to do? The Federal courthouse has been under siege for how long? This didn’t just start last night or the night before. Or the night before. Or even the night before that.
