Deload Training at the Jersey shore

running Wed 5 miles; Friday 4 miles; sunday 6 miles.

Lots of sun, swimming, and digging in the sand. I love to play. And my kids are at such a great age. Who will I play with when they are grown?

Training–decided to go back to the 3-5-1 variant of 5-3-1.

3-3-3 Squats

My new very extensive warm up: jumps; dynamic flexibility work, BW single leg work, hip rehab shit; balance stuff x 3 x took longer than I hoped.

Squats:

95x3
110x3
fucked up and forgot to change the weight 110x12 fuck. Added weight. Tried again.

122.5 x 8. These got ugly. very deep. a little bit good morning-e.

My inner drama queen almost got the better of me and talked me out of my BBB sets. She said, “you’re dehydrated and jet lagged. What a terrible plan to start with squats on your first day back. You suck at programming.”

My inner bitch told her to fuck off and that there was no leaving the basement until BBB squats with 105 (thank you Nikki) got done.

They got done: 105x10x5 My legs were jelly. Supersetted with recovery prowler pushes. It’s best to keep moving to stave off dying.

Then I tried to front squat. I don’t know how to do these. Tried with the bar. Felt confused. Where do my hands go? Elbows where? How wide should my stance be? Watched Masch’s videos. Felt inspired. Decided they would be easier if I added weight. Tried 95lbs. Icky. Dropped it to 65. Think I’ll start there until I’m sure I’m doing them right. Am I doing them right?

Edited to add: There’s video of the front squats. And I went running. Only made it about 2 before I gave up and walked. My legs were done.

Your inner bitch is a little hard on you sometimes. Good on you for getting the squats done, but a run on top of that? That’s crazy!

Front squats looked good! And with your flexibility I think you’ll kill these. I love front squatting for their extra glute activation. My only recommendation would be to make sure that bar is settled high on the delts, almost to the point of choking you. And be sure to keep the elbows up nice and high (one of my problems), this will also help make a shelf with your delts so you can rest the bar better (you don’t need all your fingers under the bar either, I FS with just my three middle fingers). The stance I think can be whatever is comfortable, gets you ATG and keeps the back tight and upright - looks like you got that with no problem!

I hope you stick with the front squatting! I bet you’ll be putting up some big numbers soon, and the strength crossover is great! Might even be good for the gymnastics? Are you still going to be doing gymnastics in this cycle?

with regards to the front squats there are 2 hand positions that I know of.

This is the Oly style (which hurts my wrists)


and this is the crossed arm which I use.

as for leg position- what ever allows you to hit proper depth. In my case it’s very similar to back squat.

woo hoo the vid finally played for me! those were looking pretty good! yes to elbows up more. i can grip my fingers right round the bar now - but took about a year to get that flexible with them. the bar should rest on your delts. i’ve even seen people squat holding their arms out straight in front of them like a zombie. it shouldn’t be resting in your fingers / hands at all or it will hurt your wrists.

looking really good, though. looked like you were having some awesome fun at the beach, too.

Your legs are hot hot hot! Holy hell woman. I’d wear shorts year round if I were you! Anyhow, from what I know I’ll second/third what everyone has said about keeping the bar higher on the delts and keeping the elbows up. This article is pretty helpful as well.

I also read an article that demonstrated using a strap to hold onto the bar, and focusing on not letting your upper spine round, but I can’t find that one. I’ll keep searching and get back to you. I like the warm-up too, looks like you’re hitting your new plan head on!

a few things I find helping me-

I use the grip like maschy described with two or three fingers,
and I have to put my hands out a bit further and that helps keep the elbows up.

you guys have allot of of training equiment at home , must be nice.
kids on the beach sounds like so much fun.

Cal: My inner bitch was just sticking up for the geeky planner in me. Really, I thought alot about my training during my travel time. It would have been bad to not follow through on my first day. Of course, it could be that my inner drama queen was right that I suck at planning/training, but I’m not going to concede that point easily.

Masch: Thanks for the front squat help. Yes, I’m going to stick with them. They’re tricky little kinky fuckers. I totally choked myself on several reps. I’m looking forward to doing them with some real weight. And yes–I’ll be doing gymnastics this cycle too–for all my planning I ended up cutting nothing only adding shit! Of course.

Kmcync: Thanks for the FS grip tips. Re the home gym: my husband has been investing in it for several years now. What we don’t spend on gym fees we spend on gym equipment. We bought a prowler one year a GHR the next…and so it goes. Now we need more space!

Front squats are a tough one to get right the without direct coaching, I didn’t see the video but it looks like you’ve had solid advice thrown at you from many directions at once. Start them lighter than you think you need to and be ready for the soreness the first few weeks, they hit pretty damn hard and leave no quad untouched. A lot of people also get pretty nasty abdominal soreness from front squats the first few times so be prepared for that as well. Good luck miss, love seeing the PR’s roll out.
