Mike died the same night they shot his exercise video. He didn’t look or sound to be in great health, but not like someone mere hours from dying. So who knows. Heart attacks happen out of the blue.
Where can I find the routines from heavy duty 1 for kindle or pdf download?
Xforce56, Heavy Duty I is hands down my favorite Mentzer book. This is the book from 1993. Here are some excerpts taken with my phone of the routine and key points he listed. Hopefully these come through okay enough.
Agree that was his best book and fit ‘bodybuilding’ way more than the later stuff
Is there anywhere to get this book without lying $100+ for it?

I’m reading Mike Mentzer Heavy Duty on Scribd. Check it out: Mike Mentzer Heavy Duty | PDF
Best part in that book. Page 36: “Conversations with Dorian Yates”…
Mike was so adamant about finding the precise amount of exercise needed, he tells the reining Mr. Olympia to reduce his training to 12-15 minutes every four or five days in prep for 1993 contest.
I believe Dorian would have taken an already gargantuan body to even greater heights had he listened to Mike’s advice.
Instead he suffered numerous injuries in later years.
Great stuff!
Respectfully, Steve
My experience in observing natural bodybuilders with great genetics who are committed and willing to work hard is that they can achieve staggering results utilising volume and frequency that would drive the majority of gym goers into the ground.
Throw drugs into the mix and it becomes even more apparent.
I truly believe that with Dorian’s work ethic reducing or increasing sets or rest days would within reasonable bounds had little difference to his results.
The real debate in my opinion about Mike’s (or anybody’s) programme is how the majority of people respond in terms of results.

So what would Dorians routine have been had he listened to Mike and cut it to 12 minutes? That’s a short time to get much done? Did Dorian ever get bigger after their discussions as Mike thought he might and how could Mike have deduced Dorian could get bigger? I guess going from 6 sets to one is something to consider but any further reduction might have seemed going to far and Dorian was reluctant to try ?
Yates was not working out like Mentzer was saying. He trained 4 days a week with several “warm up” sets not to failure. Then to failure on the last working set on each exercise.
I saw him on Joe Rogans podcast. He also gave Arthur Jones credit for one set to failure.
What does Ray mean by systemic overload?
So back to Mentzer advising Dorian to reduce his workout even further from one set to a 12 To 15 minute workout in the Heavy Duty book Is there any champion who took that advice either directly or indirectly and became as big as he could be? I would think that to work back, chest, arms, delts legs etc in 15 minutes to be near impossible or was that 15 minutes just for Biceps?

Which book is this in?
It’s in the Mentzer Heavy duty book mentioned earlier in this thread, there’s a link to it. You can read it online.

I ask because I had the HD1 book and do not recall that statement. I sold the book for hefty profit.
Curious which page this is on?
36 or there about?

There is a whole chapter about it in the wisdom of mike mentzer. My favorite book of his cause it lays out his own most productive routine.
Is there a any routines in the wisdom of Mike mentzer book?
Good question! If I were to buy one book about Mentzer incl protocols - is it “the wisdom of…”?
Btw, hands up to this thread. Great contributions. Love to read all about Mike Mentzer. When was he exactly on top of the game? Was it 1980 or before that?
Another question - Considering Mentzer left the professional curcuit after Olympia 1980 - For how long was he in decent shape? The 90ties pics show a somewhat degraded physique, hidden behind sweaters.
He lays out what he calls his most productive routine. Essentially a 4 day a week A/B workout. 2-4 total sets per body part.
