I was sporting a hell of a muffin top last night squeezing into the new squat suit. At one point I think my ass was up to the back of my neck. It’s like it takes every ounce of fat on your body and squishes it all up. Not fucking good to see. I won’t be wearing it to the mall.
You are right though. Much of it is about the fit and whether it’s too tight.

And just because it’s not as bad, don’t think that she’s not a part of the problem.
A slightly fatter chick looks at her and thinks if that chick can get away with it, then why not me?

Mine doesn’t squish the fat up - it squishes it down. I have reverse muffin top thighs in those things. Pretty gross!
The girl with the whale tail would look fine if she just had some jeans that fit right. Part of this can be blamed on the fashion industry - there was a time a few years ago where you couldn’t buy jeans that had a low-but-not-too-low rise - it was either mom jeans or jeans with a 1/4" rise, which look good on no one.
If your jeans are designed to have a waist halfway up your ass, yeah, you will spill out. Buy better jeans.

Women are taught (or at least, used to) to accentuate looks at a young age by other women because that is what attracts men. They simulate fertility signals: show off cleavage, ripe red lipstick, long healthy hair, smooth tight skin from makeup and moisturizers.
What men taught to attract women: Go get a job! Make her laugh, be confident. Be yourself! I’d like to add not wearing capri’s or clam-diggers that show off your pubic bones.

From an evolutionary perspective health and fitness are more important things for woman than for men - they are the ones who have to be subjected to the stress of pregnancy, which until recently was a pretty risky thing. The more fit you are as a woman, the better your chances of surviving. Fitness, by and large, can often be determined by looks.
Men, however, have more of an advantage based on their social status. Humans are built to be social and form communities and such. The men with the best social status have the best ability to provide for a woman while she’s pregnant or raising a child since they tend to have more resources at their disposal. Physical fitness of course plays into their ability to provide as well, but not as much as social status.
