Today was almost fun. I was actually able to get up at my normal time, although, I did nothing to brag about in the gym. I even discovered the thrall reading has while doing the hamster wheel thing on the elliptical. But, before I go any further, I’ll break down my morning fun:
Elliptical x 40 minutes
Bike x 10 minutes
And this is where I don’t really remember what I did after, as it was really not worth mentioning. Oh yeah! I remember now, I had some fun with dips. I knocked out several sets of dips. First time in a month and a half. That was fun. Now the rest of the day was pretty damned eventful. Between placating the local populace, and receiving some interesting curveballs, it’s been fun.
One thing that did strike a chord with me was a local man who was the victim of a motor vehicle accident. Basically, his small car was in a battle with a much larger and heavier military vehicle. The military vehicle won. And took out the passenger. The man ended up with some very large rods protruding out of his body. But he wasn’t the attention-getter, his 4 y/o boy was. Largely because he was barefoot.
Kinda affected me a bit. So much so that I had my boss trace an outline of the boys foot. Once I get the measurement, I’ll be paying certain kids stores an online visit. I’m even thinking about starting something for the kids around our base. Just something kicking around in my head right now. Moving on…
I decided that it’s time for me to “complete the package” so to speak. I included an arms day in the mix. My excuse for not working my arms much had to do with our old uniforms, where we rolled our sleeves up. I’d been unable to do that back then. Since that’s no longer an issue, I figure what the hell?
Arms
Barbell Curls
65 x 10 x 6
OH Dumbbell Triceps Extension (2-arm)
75 x 10 x 6
Cable Curls (alt. arms)
60 x 10 x 3
OH D-bell Triceps Extension (single arm)
40 x 10 x 3
Reverse Barbell Curls
55 x 10 x 3
Some Funky Wrist-Flexion stuff with a bar. It was heavy.
10 x 3
Wrist-Roller w/10lb plate
Fwd and Bckwd x 2
Overall, it was actually pretty fun. Definitely have to keep it up.
Oh, and the curveball. We will be conducting a weigh-in in a couple of weeks, so I will now have no choice but to restrict my diet and up the cardio. This is going to be a fun couple of weeks. That is all for now.
What was almost a rocky start, turned into a not-too-bad finish. As it’s my last day in the office for the next week, I got a lot of work done. That extends to the gym as well, even. I overslept by an hour, considered just sleeping in, but couldn’t do it. So, morning PT it was.
Elliptical x 10 mins.
Punches and Kicks x til my stomach started aching
Bike x 30 mins.
As the day progressed and I got stuff done, my agent orange began kicking in big time. Again, I was going to call today a “rest” day, however, 15 minutes into my “rest”, I couldn’t take it any longer, so, off to the races!
Sumo Deadlift
135 x 10 x 8
Military Press
95 x 10 x 8
Those were supersetted, by the way.
Jumprope x 100
Barbell Rows
135 x 10 x 5
Supersetted again.
At the moment, I’ve just been briefed on the new standards that have been put out. Par for the course, it’s a lot of BS. The biggest bit is saluting in hostile territory. It’s not usually done, however, we’ve got a special group of folks in charge now. And there is now a subtle sign that I’ll be relocating and working directly for these folks. Imagine my excitement.
Maybe you mentioned this already–sorry, I didn’t read all of every entry–but why on eart are you not on your medication for BPD? Did you have to get off before your deployment, or was it your choice?
My daughter’s father just came back from a year-long deployment in Afghanistan in September. You’re pretty much echoing everything he hated about the people he worked with. He was miserable, mostly because of the people.

Anti-psychotics are on the “no-no” list for deployment, so I came off of them. With the exception of the several months that followed that decision, the past couple of months have been alright. I just keep a tight rein on my emotions and such.
I get along pretty well with my coworkers here in the tent, however, there is a HUGE disconnect with our powers-that-be in the hard building. And it really doesn’t matter where we go, people are always going to be people. There are bad ones, there are good ones, and those in between. Just have to react accordingly. And I’m not miserable. Just very much annoyed most of the time! lol.
Today was an interesting day. After taking yesterday off, I figured to hit the gym first thing in the morning. Didn't quite happen that way. I don't think I should go to bed annoyed, as it tends to affect my sleep. Yesterday's debacle involved "Movie Night" as put out by our higher ups. The movie chosen: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. The participents: Just four of us in the tent. None of the higher ups showed. While the movie was very enjoyable, I ended up watching it alone, as the other three left after half an hour. I don't blame them for taking off. Two just didn't like it, and one just said to hell with it since the folks who wanted this didn't even bother coming. At one point, one did show up, and I even told them that this was the first and last "Movie Night" I'll be coming to. Felt like a waste of my time, and I hate to have my time wasted. More than that, however, there is a growing disconnect between fieldhands and the house-negroes, so to speak. When this disconnect is addressed, nothing is done, nothing changes.
With that in mind, a "request" was put out by our higher headquarters for bodies to fill a position in their headquarters. Our boss kindly asked for volunteers. I'm pretty adept at reading between the lines. Knowing full well that I'm the only one that they'd be willing, eager even, to part ways with, I went ahead and put my name in the hat. I got a sort of confirmation a few days later that I'd be going. Figures. Then today, I was asked how badly I wanted to go down there. There being the cesspool known as Kandahar. That was a stupid question. Asked by someone I've grown increasingly disappointed in. While I haven't been the best soldier out here, hell, that's understating a bit, I do listen when people bring things to my attention. I do pay attention to the lay of the land, and I do TRY to make necessary changes. Another thing I do is watch people and learn about them. I know when I'm being prodded or manipulated, so it irks me when the manipulator keeps playing silly head games. To answer the stupid question, I looked the person in the eyes and ensuring they understood me clearly, I told them "It is what it is." And left it at that. So, I'll probably be relocating upon my return from the states. That short conversation provided more than enough fuel to get the fire burning brightly again.
21 November 2010
Incline Bench Press
185 x 10 x 10
Dumbbell Press
70 x 10 x 10
Heavybag Work x 10 minutes. Think I’ll be bringing my handwraps and gloves tomorrow morning.
Nothing better than giving some asshole a response that leaves him with nothing to come back with.
Fuck 'em, Beast. You’re outta that shit hole in a few weeks, get some much deserved relaxing back home, and just go with the flow when you’re back.
Thanks, again, for serving. Dealing with the BS just comes with the territory of being an asset to the country. Keep your head up, and eyes forward.

Thanks, Ink. And yes, the BS is a part of the package, unfortunately.
This morning’s fun lasted until my abz got a bit tight. I put the brakes on at that point and decided to rest up a bit, as tonight is Deadlift night.
22 November 2010
Morning
Treadmill Fun
30:60 x 5 with an incline of 15 (highest it’d go) I would walk for a minute, then jog for 30 seconds. Not up to a full sprint yet. Not even close. But, this is more work than the elliptical or bike, so I’m cool with it.
Jumprope x 1 minute, followed by my barbell complex (see previous page). I did three rounds of this, although I was hoping for five rounds. After the third, my incision site began reminding me that I’m still in the woods of recovery. But, I am pleased with being able to jumprope for a full minute. Progress!
I’ve been dieting down a bit, as we have weigh-ins coming soon, however, I decided to loosen up a bit today, as I’ll be doing deadlifts this evening. I’ll need all the energy I can get as I’m going with a heavier load. Attached is a current pic, as of this morning.
Lookin “Beast” for sure man. Nice work
For tonight’s festivities, I decided to work my back. Typically my favorite day of the week. Just something awesome about being the only dude in the gym who deadlifts religiously. While I am not yet healed enough to go heavy, I am getting stronger each week. To think, when I got back into the gym, I was reduced to 135lbs for the deadlift. That was humbling to say the least. But, enough about that. I decided to record a couple sets of deads today. My only hope is that the video loads. But, the workout went as follows:
22 November 2010
Evening
Deadlifts
135 x 5 (warmup)
135 x 3 (another warmup)
dynamic stretching and such, followed by static groin stretching, followed by rolling the shorts up a bit, followed by putting tape on my shins.
245 x 10 x 10
Dumbbell Rows
60lbs x 10
60lbs x 15 x 2
60lbs x 12
1 PULLUP!!! NO PAIN!!! This was the highlight of the session. So excited was I, that I broke out the handwraps and gloves, then went to town on the heavybag. What was supposed to be a ten minute finisher, turned into 40 minutes of various combos and lots of hooks. It was a lot of fun. I actually get a kick out of the looks on people’s faces when I’m soaked in sweat, pumped up, teeing off on the bag so hard that I have to yell with each blow. I even surprised myself by finishing a hook combination with a left-leg head kick. Think I’ll be playing with the bag from now on.
Guess the vid didn’t load. Bummer. I’ll post snapshots in a minute, then.
nice read Beastie ![]()
ruck sack in the moonlight sounds very romantic.
yeah! for managing a pullup so quickly (I still can’t)
and I look forward to reading about your travels.
Keep safe.

Main!! That brings back memories of two of my nephews when they were younger. Thanks for hitting up my log. It’s one of the few things out here keeping me somewhat sane. The rucking in the moonlight out here is awesome. Feels like I’m walking on a totally different world.
At the moment, I’m dragging major ass today. Between last nights marathon session, then getting back in the gym for cardio and more bagwork this morning, I’m exhausted. “Rip its” and “Boom Booms” are my best friends right now. Those and my Yerba Mate tea (thank you, Bre.) Very necessary. I wonder what tonight’s workout will be like. As for this morning:
Treadmill warmup x 5 minutes
Dynamic warmup/stretching x 15 minutes
Jumprope
2 rounds x 1 minute
3 rounds x 2 minutes
Heavybag Work
3 rounds punching combos x 2 minutes
2 rounds punching/kicking/knee combos x 2 minutes
I called it quits after that, as I was spent. Tonight’s fun will be focused on muh shouldaz. Will be very interesting where I get the energy from. No rest for the wicked, I suppose.
tried Yerba Mate once, not bad. But I’m a real coffee snob. I buy the freshly roasted, organic fair trade at 15$ a pound, grind it fresh everyday and brew it with filtered water.
you can take many things away from me but my 2 cups of coffee in the morning. not going to happen.
Also my mother was diagnosed bi-polar 10 years ago, but she has been living with it most of her life, hence so have my brother and I. It’s not easy. The highs were so amazing but a few days later the lows wer just too damn brutal…
glad you got your shit together.
Well, I ended up tapping into a very reliable source of energy this evening. Mr. Black made a guest appearance for my workout, and decided to remain a little while after, as I was blasted with the stupid stick upon completion. I have to wonder what good are people most days. I won’t divulge in details, however, let’s just say my ire was raised quickly. And they ask how badly I want to move down south…
23 November 2010
Shoulders
Standing Military Press
135 x 10 x 10 (Around set 6, I became “that guy” that was grunting and such loudly.)
Shrugs
135 x 12 x 10
Standing Alternating Dumbbell Press
40 x 30 x 5
Instead of finishing on the heavybag, I got the message about the dumb shit I touched on above. Staying in there would have been a bad idea, so better I depart and walk a bit to cool off. Of course, I only got heated once I stepped into my tent and saw a note on my computer. Two weeks until I’m out of here…hopefully for a while longer than three weeks.

I only drink coffee when absolutely necessary. And when that happens, it’d better be akin to tar. Otherwise, I’m a tea man. I would probably take your coffee away just to get you riled up! lol.
I’m glad I got my shit together, as well. Awareness is the key.

I am “that guy” often. The key to it is to have no shame. Keep killing it man, and hopefully you will get some better surroundings soon.

Well, where I’m going after I return from leave will be infinitely more crowded, unfortunately, however, I won’t mind. I’ll just carve out my lil piece of space and go to work!
After a good night’s sleep, plus one extra hour of sleep, I got a pretty good session in this morning. I’m also seeing the fat go away, however, and this ain’t bad at all, I’ve gained weight instead of losing it. Since I started the GVT, I’ve packed on 10 pounds already. Pics will come soon. For now, here’s the work:
24 November 2010-Thanksgiving Eve
Morning
Jumprope/Sumo Deadlift/Bench Press x 10 rounds
1 min. 10 reps 10 reps
Pullups (FUCK YEAH!!!)
BW x 3 x 3
I left the gym feeling close to my old self. That won’t last, as I’ll be better than the previous version!
damn sweet pullups. I refuse to torture myself with them…for now.
new and imnproved Beastie… now with comfort blankie!
just teasin. keep that spirit up.
