They’ve started construction on the Interstate heading south out of my city and three lanes narrow down to two (left lane closes)…
I HATE the fucking assholes that can’t seem to merge over except after they fly down the empty left lane, passing every sign that says MERGE NOW up until the lane is closing off, and traffic has to come to a halt to let them merge over. Drives me NUTS. They have ample warning, and traffic would flow much smoother. The right lane actually turns out to be the faster lane in this case.

Ok, so you drive and move out of the way of faster drivers. Understood. My bad.
I figured you were a non driver from the tone of your comment. We’re all here venting and ranting about how much we hate slow drivers in the fast lane, and here you come all calm and reasonable talkin’ about how they don’t have to move over if they’re doing the speed limit.
I get pissed off enough while I’m actually driving, but unless I’m late for something, I generally find it easy to simmer down.
Something I hate more than that is when I’m stopped at an intersection/pulling out of a parking lot/driveway wanting to turn, but I have to wait because a car is coming…only to have the asshole turn off without signaling before he gets to where I am. Basically, because he didn’t signal, I was forced to sit there longer than I needed to.
I also fucking hate that I seem to be the only one who looks at the actual traffic light when it turns green instead of the car in front of me. If everyone just looked at the light and let off the brakes when it turned green, so many more cars could make it through the intersection. Instead, sometimes I don’t even get to move until the light has turned back to red. So fucking stupid.

Me too. I also feel contempt for the people at the front of the line who let allow them to get over.
Say, I come up to a truck that is going 65 mph, and I move to the left lane to pass it and I’m going 80 mph. It will take me about 5 seconds or so to get to the front of the truck where I can move back over.
You are saying that if, after I change lanes, someone else who is driving 95 crosses into the lane behind me, I am supposed to immediately floor it so that I can pass the truck faster and get out of the dude’s way?
I’m not driving slowly, and I AM passing someone.
If you need to drive that fast, leave sooner.
Dude, why get hung up on the hypotheticals? Just get out of the fast lane when it’s safe/convenient/whatever to do so and let the faster car pass.
That’s always been my point. I’m only IN the left lane if I’m passing someone. If someone else is coming up behind me while I’m passing a line of cars and I’m not passing fast enough, too bad.
You and sen say might have to duel to the death.
Fuckin’ a right.
Your all retards.
If I’m on a 4-lane highway where the speed limit is 55 mph and the ‘left’ lane is for passing…doesn’t that mean that 3 of the 4 lanes are only for passing? Wouldn’t that mean that if there’s a car in the far right lane doing 55 mph (the legal speed limit) that all the cars in the 1st lane to the left would have to be passing every car in the right hand lane…so…therefore they’d all have to be doing roughly 60 mph? Therefore, exceeding the legal speed limit.
Now…the cars in the next lane to the left need to be passing every car in the 2 lanes to their right…so they need to be doing at least 65…and finally the cars in the furthest left hand lane need to be passing all the cars in the 3 lanes to their left…so…they need to be doing at least 70…so you’ve got 3 lanes of traffic breaking the law by speeding…
Trust me…this is not the intent of ‘left lane for passing only’ laws.
These laws were put on the books when cars were first invented and not all cars could easily and safely achieve 55 mph. Now, they are still ‘on the books’ for the same dumbass reason other dumbass, irrelevant laws are on the books. Dumbass politicians and dumbass people. For you morons to get suckered into this numbs my brain. Stop it. Serialy.
Honestly…try this: Leave on time for where you are going. Sit in the far right lane doing 5 miles below the speed limit. No one will be able to accuse you of being a ‘left-lane bandit’ and you will feel zero frustration while driving. Think about it…never again will you have to curse someone for going too slow…never again will you have to give someone the finger, or pull your imaginary gun because you are convinced 2 drivers are going too slow in order to ‘block you’ in the ‘passing lane’ even though they are both doubling the legal speed limit…never again will you get a speeding ticket.
You will save money in gas. You will save wear and tear on you car. You will be able to spend more time talking to your date and get more highway blowjobs. AND you will get where you’re going on time and relaxed.
Wise the fuck up you asshats. You’re most likely driving a piece of shit, and you are a sucky driver who couldn’t drive a manual transmission if you were paid to, has never taken an advanced driver’s ed class and is unable to execute any skill in driving outside of stepping on the accelerator.
It’s the same goddam road that parents with infants drive on, it’s the same goddam road that senior citizens must traverse to get to their chemo appointments, it’s the same goddam road that 16 year old inexperienced kids are driving on to get to school in the morning when they’re still half asleep. It’s not Mad fucking Max.
Did you read the thread, or just come in and post?
Who said anything about 4 lane highways? I’ve never seen a “Left Lane for Passing” sign on a four lane highway.
Common sense says that on a 3 - 4 lane highway, the middle lanes are the slower lanes, the right lane is for exiting and entering, and that drivers who want to pass can use either the right or left lane for passing, whichever makes the pass maneuver easier.

The problem with what you have said here is that speed limits were also put into place when cars weren’t all that advanced.
Does this mean speed limits aren’t a relevant law either?
Just looking up state laws regarding the left-lane rule, and I saw this for Florida:
Governor Bush vetoed SB732, which would have reserved the left lane for passing, saying that drivers blocking the left lane are “cautious and careful.”
Someone needs to drain that gene pool!
The bottom line is this: On any road with 2 lanes or more, the courteous thing to do is to keep the left lane open to passers unless traffic is too heavy to restrict it to one lane.
The law is in place to deter the idiots that sit in the left lane for miles, going at or below the speed limit. Doing this creates a line of cars behind you, slowing traffic and increasing the chance for rear-end accidents. YES, going slow in this case is just as dangerous as going 20 over!
Going ridiculously fast is not what we’re advocating, I’d be lucky just to reach the speed limit on my commute, and if the road is wet; forget about it!
Last month I ended up behind a guy who merged on the highway doing around 35, flew into the left lane with no signal, and when I flashed my brights he slammed on his brakes coming to a stop.
Coming to a f****** stop in the middle of a freeway! I hit him doing about 15mph, got a ticket for following too closely, and lost my truck for a week to the body shop. I’ve just adopted the attitude that you can’t fix stupid, so writing your local government is your only option.
Hell, Colorado is about to ban cell phone use while driving thanks to citizens complaining about clueless drivers.
Another statement for the people who think “I’m doing the speed limit, everyone else can kiss my ass”:
Note that this law refers to the ‘normal’ speed of traffic, not the ‘legal’ speed of traffic. The 60 MPH driver in a 55 MPH zone where everybody else is going 65 MPH must move right. Contrast Alaska’s rule, 13 AAC 002.50, allowing vehicles driving at the speed limit to use the left lane, and Colorado rev. stat. 42-4-1103, prohibiting blocking the “normal and reasonable” movement of traffic.
I also hate it though when I’m in the passing lane going 75-80, passing people, and someone comes up behind going like 95-100 and expects me to move over.
No, that is not how it works. If someone wants to go faster than you, you have two options: Get over into the slower lane, or speed up.
Is this a serious response? If I’m passing an 18 wheeler, I don’t have the option to move over.
If I’m passing anything, actually, I don’t have the option to move over.
Yes, it is a 100% serious response. As you have stated, it is physically impossible for you to get over in that situation. Because of that, you only have one option left: Speeding up.
If you can not handle that, maybe you should stay home.
(Yes, I’m an asshole.)
EDIT: On a side note, I am not one of those that drives 100mph. I usually only go 9mph over, BUT, if someone wants to go faster than me, I promptly get over.

I did exactly what you said once on I35 and I was the one to get pulled over by the trooper…so, yeah, NO! I will continue to drive the speed (normally 5-9mph over) I was going and you will just have to wait until I am passed the person on the right…Sorry to ruin your aggie day.
