No, that is not how it works. If someone wants to go faster than you, you have two options: Get over into the slower lane, or speed up.
The left lane is for passing. It isn’t for just going as fast as you want.
Actually you should be going faster when you pass. “cruise control passing” (where you don’t speed up just move left and slowly pass) is very dangerous, especially if it’s a truck on the right you don’t want to spend any more time next to him than you have to. A sudden gust of wind can push it over a couple feet, or maybe he can’t see you in his mirror, you don’t know what is going on.
Passing too slow is much more dangerous than passing quickly then getting back over.
In IL they passed a law a few years ago saying you need to hurry up and pass and get out of the left lane. This is of course ignored near Chicago, but in the rest of the state that is rural it is kept.
There is a difference between speeding up to pass and being expected to push the panic button and drop down into 3rd gear while flooring it just to accomodate someone who wants has just come up behind you going 95.

Do you guys really not understand that, by definition, to be passing someone means that someone must be beside you momentarily? I don’t like moving into the next lane when there is already a car in it.
Amen to this thread! All I can say is LEARN HOW TO MERGE YOU FUCKING IDIOTS.
Traffic sucks in general in most places – mostly because no one that works in the transportation departments really understands how “performance” affects it – i.e., rate of traffic throughput.
I work from home most of the time so I am unaffected but on rare occasion that I have to go downtown to see a client, driving irks me to no end and I often think about committing mass murder on some stupid people who make an asinine situation even worse.
For example, how idiotic is it that on-ramps to the freeway are metered with stop lights? One cannot even get up to speed in a short distance from a stopped position. I always run the red light to get on. Fuck it, you unresponsive cyborg drivers!
MN roads and traffic signals are just all dicked-up in general. Now I am all pissed off, great! Yeah, I had to drive this morning.
Oh yeah, to any would be visitors who are thinking about coming St. Paul: good luck and “May the Force be with you” trying to make left turns here – I hope you don’t get killed by one of the many offenders that run stop lights.

By driving in the fast lane, that is your responsibility. If for any reason, you can not handle that responsibility, the state has provided you with a slow lane to drive in.
Thats like a quadriplegic sitting in the exit row of an airplane.
They tend to want to find another car and drive RIGHT along side it for 40 miles as well so no one behind can pass anyone.
I personally feel people like this feel poWerless in their everyday lives. Maybe this is their one chance all day long to hold something over someone.
“Ha ha! I am GOD of the freeway! Everyone must stay behind me as I cruise at 30mph in a 60mph zone!”

I drive from College Station to my hometown by Dallas about once a month.
Most of the drive is 4 lane highways, 2 lanes in each direction.
I do not understand what is the problem with these people who want to go BELOW the speed limit in the left lane. In fact, even if they are going the speed limit, if they’re in the left lane and someone wants to pass them, they should get over.
The law in Texas is that slower traffic must keep right. There are plenty of signs posted.
Maybe these idiots didn’t have good parents; Maybe they don’t really have a drivers license; Maybe they’re blind; Shit, maybe they just can’t read.
I don’t care if the right lane is completely open, there is no reason I should have to cancel my cruise control and go around them. They are the ones who have messed up, not me.
I hope that the first born child of all these drivers dies at birth. Then, I want the doctor to come in the room and tell them “Sorry, it was because you are a horrible driver.”

I get more pissed off with the people who try to merge onto the highway going 40 mph when most people in texas are driving at an avg speed of 80 mph on the highway. That makes for great fun. You do get the occasional douche bag who will be going 55 in a 65 zone in the left lane.

So let me just make sure I have this straight.
Say, I come up to a truck that is going 65 mph, and I move to the left lane to pass it and I’m going 80 mph. It will take me about 5 seconds or so to get to the front of the truck where I can move back over.
You are saying that if, after I change lanes, someone else who is driving 95 crosses into the lane behind me, I am supposed to immediately floor it so that I can pass the truck faster and get out of the dude’s way?
I’m not driving slowly, and I AM passing someone.
If you need to drive that fast, leave sooner.

I honestly think this is the case.
Or maybe they come from Australia. The left lane is the slow lane here.
Unlikely.

Drag Racing, they are
The left hand lane isn’t there for people to go faster than the speed limit. If someone is doing the speed limit in the left lane, and you want to pass, tough.
It’s frustrating, but they don’t have to move for you.
high beams ftw

Bullfarkin shit!!! You should not have to move over if your doing ten over (which is the unwritten rule in my state) and the other driver comes up on your arse doing 80, 90 plus. You seriously don’t have any business going that speed unless you’ve got the authority too. Seriously, if some douche comes up on me at that speed he/she had better have blues or reds flashing because otherwise it’s not happening. Also I hate being passed on the right. LOL, Am I a douchebag? I mean seriously, I’m doing the right thing. (No cops gonna pull me over for doing ten over with a set of vet plates mind you.)
I mean seriously, should I move over so the kid driving his 85 Honda rice burning fourbanger with flames, coffee can muffler and air intake can pass me and put more people in danger? No thanks, I would rather watch him elbow his steering wheel in anger. Maybe give the staties a call after I leave the exit…

I live on Vancouver Island, BC. The Land of Retirement Communities.
The problem is epidemic here. It drives me nuts. Every grandma and grandpa and midlife-crisis baby boomer seems to think that they are the self-appointed traffic police.
Just like the OP said, they’ll drive in the left-hand lane, at or below the speed limit, and seeing as there’s only ONE major highway on the ENTIRE ISLAND, it slows traffic down to 5-under the limit.
Drives.
Me.
NUTS!
