Do your childhood/adolescence memories involve playing a lot of NES/SNES/Sega games by any wild chance?
If so, there are some instrumental bands recreating/modifying many of the old background pieces… But they’re usually more in the vain of power metal… 1-2 of them are actually quite good… (powerglove for example, only 2 records thus far though and self-produced)
Of course if you didn’t grow up with Sonic, Super Mario and Castlevania, you probably won’t be able to really appreciate that kind of music to it’s fullest…
Furthermore, Blotted Science, Behold the Arctopus (the latter isn’t much of a favorite of mine to be honest, but I guess they deserve to be mentioned) and co may interest the fans fans of complex/technical music, though it’s metal once again (and a little more on the extreme side compared to the video-game metal bands).
Spastic Ink are related to Blotted Science but more melodic… Only their first album is all instrumental though, the second has vocals. Also definitely on the technical side, check the Bambi video…
More in the prog-rock -vain: Planet X (so-so production though… Virgil Donati’s bass/double-bass sound tends to suck), try midnight bell (on moonbabies) or matrix gate (from the newer album, don’t recall the name at the moment).
Possibly of more interest to you is the stuff John Scofield recorded together with Dennis Chambers etc… Look them up on wikipedia (funk/jazz).
How about some actual jazz?
Miles Davis: Seven Steps to Heaven, for example, pretty old album but I liked it…
Lots of other great stuff around I just mentioned some funk/prog/metal/jazz…
I’ll leave the rest to other posters.
Gotta catch some shuteye…
Otherwise, yeah, Zappa for president
