Basically, if you know how a polygraph test is administered, and can identify the “baseline response questions” and give a strong response to them (by clenching you anus shut tightly for example) you can then lie all you want and the polygrapher won’t be able to discern anything.
The polygraph works mostly because people who don’t understand it are afraid of it and tend to confess to the polygrapher when he asks them “is there anything else you’d like to tell me” while they’re still wired to it.
Of course, polygraphers have a vested interest in having the polygraph considered a “scientific” instrument.
Consider that while courts allow fingerprinting (which is not flawless), DNA evidence and ballistics (ie. actual “sciences”) they don’t allow a polygraph test to be admitted as evidence. Lawyers will often mentioned that their clients have taken or offered to take a polygraph because they know the effect such a statement has on the jury and probably some judges.
