Hel - Thanks for stopping by. Being pasty white during the winter is a requirement of Canadian citizenship. It’s in the manual. And it appears to be a requirement of the over 35 boards that you have to shave your head and grow a goatee… By the way, no word of a lie, I’m living this ridiculous lifestyle so that I can live the way you do when I’m your age. I consider that will be my reward for doing things right. I want to offer props for being an example.
username - Quite frankly, posting the speedo shot was a calculated move on my part. I’ve now established that I’m OK with being made fun of, that I have very little shame, that I can take a joke, and that I like to poke fun. Let the good times roll!!! And that’s some monster back width you have there.
Also, there are lots of different thoughts on peaking. Some like to take the whole week off before, I think you need to do some work the week before to keep the momentum going. At five weeks out, you could run Smolov base if you start right now, but your friends will think you cheated.
Otherwise, for my last meet, three to four weeks out I cut out the assistance work and hit the main lifts with heavy triples, doubles and singles for a few heavy sets. One to two weeks I worked up to my second lift and close or even my equal to my third for a single. The last week, I worked up to openers. I thought this worked pretty well.

Yes, absolutely shave your head. I had a goatee but it started coming in grey and my vanity couldn’t handle it. Maybe when I hit 50.
Another ignorant newbie question (please be gentle):
At PL meets is there a distincation between sumo vs conventional deadlifts? Are you allowed to do whichever suits your fancy? Do the rules just say whatever you do to get the bar from floor to lockout is A-OK or are there further specifics?

Thanks in advance.[/quote]
Oh for shit’s sake, do I have to do EVERYTHING for you? This is from the IPF:
Deadlift
The lifter shall face the front of the platform with the bar laid horizontally in front of the lifters feet,
gripped with an optional grip in both hands and lifted until the lifter is standing erect.
On completion of the lift the knees shall be locked in a straight position and the shoulders back.
The Chief Refereeâ??s signal shall consist of a downward movement of the arm and the audible
command â??Downâ??. The signal will not be given until the bar is held motionless and the lifter is in the
apparent finished position.
Any rising of the bar or any deliberate attempt to do so will count as an attempt. Once the attempt has
begun no downward movement is allowed until the lifter reaches the erect position with the knees
locked. If the bar settles as the shoulders come back (slightly downward on completion) this should not
be reason to disqualify the lift.
Causes for Disqualification of a Deadlift.
Any downward movement of the bar before it reaches the final position.
Failure to stand erect with the shoulders back.
Failure to lock the knees straight at the completion of the lift.
Supporting the bar on the thighs during the performance of the lift. If the bar edges up the thigh but is
not supported this is not reason for disqualification. The lifter should benefit in all decisions of doubt
made by the referee.
Stepping backward or forward or moving the feet laterally. Rocking the feet between the ball and
heel is permitted.
Lowering the bar before receiving the Chief Refereeâ??s signal.
Allowing the bar to return to the platform without maintaining control with both hands, i.e.: releasing
the bar from the palms of the hand.
Failure to comply with any of the items outlined under Rules of Performance.
PS, I was never a state champion. University record holder, sure, but not a state champion.
A simple answer: you can do either conventional or sumo at a PL meet. The rules are the same. You get on the platform and pull the weight. You hold it at lockout until you get the “down” command. Then you return the bar to the floor. Most feds require a controlled drop where your hands are on the bar when it hits the floor.
Snap - Thanks for that. I pull conventional. My “competition”, the hammer throwing champ, wants to lift sumo. I’m fine with that, but reserve the right to start calling him RuPaul.
Snapper’s right, real men pull conventional. Plus typically, unless you are Meat or have an injured back, most can pull significantly more raw conventional than raw sumo. 50 to 100 lbs more. Sumo is great for the gearwhore though, you can jack the shit out of a squat/dl suit and add lots of lbs.
Snapper got the rules right, just remember also no ramping, no hitching, and I always have to tell bb’er this, no effen straps.
WEDNESDAY
Plan to go do conditioning x1
Set alarm clock an hour too late x1
D’OH!
Actual conditioning x0
THURSDAY
deload for squats
blah blah blah, who gives a s##t?
did a bunch of light leg stuff, plus a bunch of accessory work for weak points
FRIDAY
Conditioning re-boot, went to another spin class at 6am
Well I’ll say the Friday spin crowd is somewhat more serious. The rather buff guy running the class was the strong silent type, spoke only to issue commands, and he ran us into the ground. I can hanrdly wait for de-load week to be over.
Pete - I finally admitted my addiction to straps last summer. I like to think I had a good reason for starting using them, but I don’t. My grip is pathetic as a consequence, and my trap and forearm development are lagging. I’m doing lots of grip work (and masturbating 47 times a day) and it’s finally starting to improve.
Snap - Thanks for clearing that up. FOr some idiotic reason I had it in my head that there was a difference.
Bulldog - How many thousands of bulldog jpegs do you have? I dare you to post ballerina bulldog.
giterdone - I won’t have to shave my head, nature is taking care of that for me… DAMMIT! Of all the things that come with growing older, baldness is the only one that REALLY sticks in my craw. I pray that I will have the dignity to go chrome-dome gracefully and not resort to a combover like all four of my uncles. Oh dear God, what if it’s genetic!!!
jj - based primarily on your question we’ve settled on a weigh in on day 0, 2 lifts on day 1, and the other 2 lifts on day 2. Based on that, the article you sent is gold. I can shed a bunch of water for the weigh in… THAT is something I’m good at. It also sounds like sticking to 531 for the final four weeks will actually fit really nicely for a peaking protocol.
Joe - Deloads suck balls. I know they’re necessary, and I do them anyway. I still hate them. It feels like a waste of time.

No straps… Boo hooo… I can never play with the big boys…
Hahaha…no straps. Chalk works so much better . Brother your physique is pretty damn impressive, if I looked like that, my wife wouldn’t let me leave the house, haha. So I purposely stay large
Personally I pull sumo, as I find it easier to move more weight ( I use no gear), however it’s been killing my hips.
About the baldness, pretty sure it’s all genetic. There’s no baldness in my family, Dad had hair into his 70’s. My brother’s 62 and still has a mop. Mine just keeps growing, I keep getting it cut but it just grows back. I have to shampoo, and dry it, and brush it, it’s a real pain…
Oh, sorry. Didn’t mean to depress you.
Eh, just tell folks it’s due to high testosterone levels. They’ll buy it.
Sunday - Last day of de-load week
Deadlift
… blah blah blah
… who gives a s##t
I hate deload weeks. I feel guilty drinking my post-wo drink because I don’t feel like I earned the carbs. Still, I understand they are necessary and I gotta suck it up. Tuesday I can lift real weight again. Well, real weight for me. Warm ups for the rest of you. The important thing is the AWESOMENESS resumes Tuesday.
bulldog - I stand humbled. Now I really gotta try and stump you. How about this one: A bulldog with amohawk?
Null - Dunnoe whether or not you were beign sarcastic. If you were serious, I can’t say enough about finally gettign rid of the straps. I have seen noticeable trap development. I also think my senior citizen-like grip is the reasonf or my lacking upper chest development. Think on it. It hurts the ego, but is worth it.
Scott - Thanks for the compliment. Sadly the hotness has faded with summer. “Sexy Kent” is also “carb deprived Kent”, which is also “cranky Kent”… and my wife and kids were profoundly sick of living with “cranky Kent”. Hearing all the back-and-forth over sumo vs conventional has basically convinced me “different strokes for different folks”.
Snap - Very well put. Depressing as hell, but defintiely well put.
Cavalier - GO BLOW IT OUT YOUR EAR!!! Jealous? Me? Wadda ya mean!!!
