Here we go: measurements and progress photos. For comparison, the first numbers are from when I got ripped up in July. The second numbers are me as a Fatass.
I was initially all impressed with the increase in griths, until I realized they are EXACTLY THE SAME as the last time I bulked up. Except apparently last time I ballooned up to 15.5% bodyfat. As usual, the numbers are ambiguous. Mayeb I gained some muscle, maybe not. By the numbers, it works out to 2.5 lb. Hmmmmmm. I’ll reserve judgement until summer when the fat comes off.
Fatass? You’re still leaner than me. And I’m trimmer than most the other guys in the gym.
This is why I seem to be gravitating towards powerlifting instead of bodybuilding. In PL, the numbers are very clear, either you lift 300 or you don’t. Bodybuilding is more ambiguous to me, am I leaner, or more muscular, or lats developed to shoulders, or what exactly? It’s impressive when someone keeps it straight.

Looks okay to me. Tell me again - Why do you want to get skinny?
Albino - I don’t wanna get skinny, I wanna get lean again. Partly for vanity; I like get ripped up for summer. It’s also to help kickstart a rebound for my next bulk over the fall and winter. I’m laboring under SERIOUSLY diminishing returns and need all the tricks I can get. According to Lyle MacDonald’s formulas I’m pushing my genetic limits for a dude with my “willowy” bone structure.
dday - Thx!
Matty - Okay, I’m being a LITTLE tongue in cheek here. I just prefer to cart around a little less flab. Plus, I look a lot bigger when the waist is lean. I’m not quite as ginormous as you, when I’m flabby the muscles look ordinary. The leaner I get, the better the illusion.
Cav - It’s all about what motivates us, right? Sure, I like lifting big weight. But what really drives me is the quest for the big muscles.
Joe - Turns out you’re 100% right. My last run through 531 was done at just over maintenance and it worked like a hot damn. I’ll be doing that again as part of my next bulk-up.

Willowy… I like that. I am medium framed. So is that “Mapley”?
And before anyone says it, I said “medium”, not “dainty” or “petite”. All the lard just makes it LOOK like I have a large frame. One of those illusions that Kent refers to.
And x2 on what Matty and DDay said. I only dream of being as lean as you are right now.
Kent, you have become my nutrition and diet zen master (wether you like it or not lol) When you do cut or attempt to lose fat, are some people physiologically predisposed to lose fat in certain areas of the body (i.e. person a will lose fat in the legs, person b will lose it in the stomach) or is it going to be all over for everyone. Im apologizing in adavnce for my ignorance on the subject.
I’ve had a few off-line conversations with some folks I deeply respect… Dudes and ladies who’ve stepped on stage… Folks from PN and elsewhere. Here’s what I consider to be the important facts.
I could compete and be a contender.
It is hard on the family.
Done. Stepping on stage doesn’t make sense for me. I’ll have to be satisified knowing I could have. I actually think thats gonna be enough!
Matty - for most guys, we gain fat first around the belt line and the mid back. Then the ass and upper legs. Once the middle torso ic packed, the belly starts to stick out and the limbs get thicker. That’s another reason why powerlifter types get scared when they diet. When they start shedding fat from their legs and arms, they freak out that they’re “shrinking” and quit. Some genetically gifted folks carry more fat in their back than their stomachs, which leads them to look better at higher body fat.
Then do what you can, Kent. The pictures you’ve posted prove you could step on stage if you chose.
I’m sure you can find a way to train well and still find time with the family. Just make sure they understand you’re happy with your decision. No one likes seeing Daddy unhappy.

Thanks for the info Kent interesting…and the decision you made was a selfless one good job.

I once worked out the evening after donating a pint of blood. BIG MISTAKE!!. A pint of blood makes a huge difference.
I think you should post some full body shots that we can use as ‘before and after’ photos to judge your fat loss progress. I think as the resident diet expert you should fully document how you go about it in here, I think a lot of people would be interested.
Good idea? Be an excuse to dig out your speedos!
Uh, me too, was uh, college days and I really didn’t feel the repeated jabs… Bruise down to wrist…
I’ve worked out after donating blood just to see how hard I could push myself. But that was when I was doing a lot of martial arts training.
But I haven’t lost enough blood to put on a speedo

Proud of you for knowing how to put first things first.

Forgive me if I’m wrong, but isn’t it the getting into competition shape (dieting to get ripped) rather than the actual stepping on stage that’s hard on the family? Surely that’s only one day?.
Regardless, I totally understand your thinking and respect that. Looking forward to following your journey.
CK Look at PR’s do they geek you more than a comp, if so you don’t need to compete. I need to stop competing the last 2 years I have injuried myself within a month of the 1st comp, I see a pattern. Just me, you do what you need to Bro. We will cheer you on whatever you chose.
