I am going to have to find the article/video, this was put out years ago back when I was gnawing at the bit for my first 225 bench. So like middle school for me back when I was home schooled and didn’t have anything to do (thankfully I’m fairly well adjusted socially) except read, surf the internet, and lift and other hobbies.
Anyway, this was probably early 2000’s that this happened. This was back when Ed Coan was still somewhat jacked, Jim Wendler was a fat fuck, and Dave Tate wasn’t a cripple. Basically back when Jim was working for Dave putting on seminars and writing articles. One very important thing to keep in mind is that Elitefts used to be the most fucking ghetto company imaginable, and it was one of the good ones. Powerlifting was really fucking weird shit back then instead of being pretty mainstream (as far as fitness goes), and fitness still had a pretty weird feel to it too. A lot of those seminars back then if you can find any videos left basically felt like cult meetings, they’d go to like a basement of a church or some place, Dave/Jim would demonstrate some exercises, there’d be a powerpoint, and people ask questions about conjugate at the end. The fucking high end ones were at Holiday Expresses and shit like that.
So needless to say there wasn’t tons of money associated with what they were doing, so when you get a job you fucking took that job. Dave and Jim were offered what they thought was a private seminar at someone’s gym in some rich area, but first they were supposed to meet up at the guy’s house. They’re at the guy’s house, and it’s a pretty nice place, and what they think is the guy’s mom answers the door. The guy comes over, dressed like a kid, and talks to them, and they found out the woman is the guy’s wife. They talk for a bit, and the guy calls for his kid to stop playing with “Uncle Eddy” and to meet Dave and Jim. Both of them calm down a bit because the whole thing was giving them a really weird feeling, but if Ed Coan knows him it must be okay.
Except he didn’t. They end up meeting up with Ed Coan in the other room and he looks fucking terrified, and they ask him about how he knows the guy, and kid since he referred to him as uncle. The thing is that he literally just met those people, and it ends up that they were being paid to just be at that guy’s house.
I forgot how it ended, but I think they all left at that point. Either that, or they left Ed Coan there. I’ll have to find the story because it’s been years since I heard/read it.
