The Focus on Professional Sports Is Bad for Society

I did already. Most any man but you.

Everyone always likes to play the social darwinist believing in survival of the fittest and that real men dominate other men until they find their unathletic child, who was always picked last and teased for being bad at sports, with no friends killed himself. Then its all ‘we need to be nicer to each other’ and ‘we have to think more about the people who get left behind.’

Does the ideal man insult other men on the internet?

Never said I was the ideal man.
It has yet to be established that you are a man.

I am a very flawed man. But I am a man.

This was literally me and the only reason I didn’t kill myself is because I found weightlifting and rugby. I am not exaggerating.

I didn’t like something so I changed it. Society owes me nothing.

Its easy to claim that you can have it both ways but its simply not so. Just look at two different sports. One is an olympic sport and the other is not. WIth bjj the purpose still lies with improving the individual, not about seeing who is the best pro. And with wrestling, it is another which weeds out people until there are olympic athletes who are the only who participate anymore. No matter what people say, people are going to say that an NBA game of basketball is more of a ‘real’ basketball game than a rec game of basketball. That attitude has effects throughout society in how sports are perceived.

Anyway, one of the purposes of art is the enjoy the work of others. Nobody would think the only purpose of writing a novel is to write it.

Well whatever I am, Im the ideal version of it.

Yes it’s the answer that requires no thought. There is nothing wrong with love of sport (to play or watch, though I think most watching just use it as an excuse to party).

If we are truly just advanced mammals (I don’t necessarily believe this but many do) then why wouldn’t our competitions be purely about showing dominance?

“Heart of a competitor” is the desire to continually improve. To let a loss drive you further. To grind out those tough reps to get just 5 lbs more on the lift next time.

I have never heard anyone claim this kind of thing about any sport.

Well I dont believe we are just advanced mammals either. So the dominance idea doesnt ring true to me.

Heart of a competitor could apply to anything then.

But they believe it.

Who is “they?”

The average person.

I mean, the average person is generally either really stupid or really ignorant so “they” are morons and I don’t suffer morons.

Have you never seen someone playing a game next to people who are substantially better and then jokingly mocking themselves for how pathetic they are compared to the others? As if what they are doing is lesser than the people with more skill. Like if a rec league basketball team is practicing when the school team comes in.

Now that is truly a blessing

Well they are lesser when it comes to that particular skill. It doesn’t mean anything other than that, especially if they are being self-deprecating.

Hold on a second here fellas. I think this newcomer may be a bot.

You can see this comment only if you have no sense of quality.

Not that the people are “less”, but that their quality of play is less. If the lower skilled players insist on internalizing the difference as their self worth, then they have not been raised properly.

Now the crux of the matter and this thread. How much money is society to throw at this to protect the fragile minds from damaging their self worth? I don’t want the government hands in my pocket.

Arent pro sports already heavily subsidized by the government?
