He’s said that, but been very clear about what they’re shit for, and I’m almost certain he only means the the actual squat, bench and deadlift. I follow quite a bit of what he says and he does use variations of those lifts. For example, I remember him talking about Smith machine guillotine presses for the pecs being better for bench press. There was also a post where he talked about using stiff leg deads, and he’s mentioned sumo rack pulls.
I mean hell, I don’t think he’s wrong. For hypertrophy there are definitely much better lifts than the SBD for most people. He’s just outspoken and blunt and that puts some peoples’ noses out of joint.
And that’s why I said that when said in a certain context, what he’s saying is valid. Maybe it’s just the way he presents or says it that ticks me off and then goes on to say he’s currently putting something up that’s better than all our wrong info useless obsolete junk
I mean I don’t think he’s wrong but he’s too black and white. Like saying deads don’t build back. I mean there are certainly better options for hypertrophy (maybe even not for the squat) but that doesn’t mean they don’t build muscle and that they are shit. But yeah I can see where he’s coming from. Most of the people I train don’t do regular bench or deads (and some squats)
As a 2A myself, it makes perfect sense. At first glance, I may look like a powerful, explosive type 1B. But if you look closer, I’m really just bouncing the bar off my chest or jerking it off the ground, trying to heave it like a dirty cheater.
Since my first strongman comp back in July I haven’t followed the vaguest idea of a program. Take this for what it’s worth because I’m a rank beginner but I’ve got stronger in the past few months than any period beforehand just because I’ve seemingly finally learned how to actually work hard and hit the reps. No program will help you if you don’t know how to actually push yourself a bit.
Worlds Strongest Man Finalist Robert Oberst: “I went from football to strongman, and in football we never did deadlifts. It was all hang cleans and power cleans, which by the way, quick little tip: if you’re deadlifting to be a better deadlifter fine. If you’re not, (you’re) doing that for deadlift’s sake, don’t f*** do it. The risk to reward ratio is a joke.***
“A lot of people are not going to like that I’m saying that. (…) If you go to any NFL gym, any college football gym, any athletics where people are actually getting paid and it matters what they’re doing, they’re not deadlifting. They’re hang cleaning and power cleaning.”
I’m proud to say that after 5 months of not deadlifting, I’ve only lost 10kg.
Confession, I’m technically not supposed to deadlift until next month, but nothing hurt so all good. I can’t wait to actually get back into it
I agree… unless there’s a legit medical reason. I mean legit b/c a lot of docs are clueless
I was honestly a little surprised that so many people reacted to that. I felt he set the context of his statement perfectly clear when he said it. I guess it wasn’t clear enough? … or a lot of YouTubers just took advantage and made reaction videos…oh well
