The Fishing Thread

This is my next lure purchase for musky.

Great fish! Great kids! That smile is worth a million bucks. I love introducing kids to fishing.

Where are you at in Michigan? I grew up outside of Grand Rapids. Sure do miss the sporting opportunities that MI provides.

Ever seen the “Lunker Duck”? I note that it is painted like a loon, which may be more appropriate in the north woods

Sweet! Looks like another musky lure purchase.

My mouse lure got lots of laughs from people. Even earned me the nick name The Mickey Mouse Guy. Until they seen me dock and then they had nothing to say when I released all my big fish just to stick it to the old timers with there spoon spinners.

Why would that not be a viable bait? I would think that you would want something even bigger - like a muskrat to get old esox’s atention. I know guys that catch huge rainbows and browns drifting mouse lures over deep pools. Something about an easy meal really lights the big trout up.

No laughs here. They make 'em for a reason-- they work.

Small rodents fall into water from bushes/trees or have to cross ponds. Fair game.

I have a couple of these myself for the fly rod

Drop one of these over a bass spawning bed in the spring…

Michigan Men where abouts are you? East or West side?

and where do you fish the most?

(East side here)

Sad story:

WE went camping several years back and came across this lake where you could literally sit on shore, and catch MONSTER 10+ inch bluegills, fish after fish after fish all day. I mean the bobber goes under as soon as it hits the water. We told my uncle, who told someone, who told someone, and so on. The lake is barren now. People where taking their limit everyday during ice fishing.

Practice conservation, assholes.

Is that Lake St. Claire? Looks Like Detroit in the background.

There aren’t big fish in Lake St. Claire.

/sarcasm

So you got a boat?[/quote]

Yeah, but I don’t trailer it. I live on a chain of lakes in Pinckney.

Ironically, I don’t fish much anymore, just a couple of times a year with the kids maybe.

Pinckney.

I don’t fish much anymore, but most of my fishing was done on the Northwest side, near Manistee.

What about fishing licenses in Michigan. Do you need one? Where do you get a temp license? In Ontario you need one. I always get the conservation license. I figure if I am going to keep one its cause it died in the fight and that fair game. Cause I would rather see the fish I release go back and make more big ones.

Yes, you need a license in Michigan. A non resident is $34.

If you are fishing in Lake St.Claire you may need a Michigan or Ontario license, depending where you are on the lake. Also, I believe live bait is forbidden on the Canadian side.

I love to go walleye fishing with my dad on the St. Clair River when ever I can.

I want to try down riggers for Salmon on Lake Huron. I think that would be nice. Come home with some Salmon steaks for the freezer.

I love fishing. These are the results of our first gulf stream run, we hit a weedline and scored. Wahoo, tuna, and dolphin.

Northern Ontario Musky Fishing is IMO the best around. Nothing like trolling drop offs with a big hunk of wood splashing around and some huge hooks. Scent helps as well. Like blood or something else. You know you have a really good spot when there are reports during the summer small dogs or cats swimming have just gone under and never returned. Sounds like a T-MAN’s fish to me.

thats one seriously big fish.

must have taken 45 minutes to get it on the boat

Its the world record Musky.

I have seen a few caught where they just let the bugger pull the boat around. Just making sure that you don’t let it get snagged up on some tree’s or something.

Then they just wait for it to tired. When you hold them they cut your hands open cause they have so many teeth. But those fish fight right to the death. Most times with the really big ones. Catching them means killing them lactic acid build up is a real bitch for them.
so every large musk caught usually dies?

maybe some anglers should learn to land their fish quicker with heavier tackle.

its a bit of a shame to kill a massive musky imo

Well half the fun is pulling in a large fish. Sometimes you have no choice but to pull them in slow or else loss your gear. Its just the way the fight goes. Those suckers fight and fight really really hard. And if your hand happens to be in thier mouth when you take back your lure. You might not have skin on your hands(most use chain gloves).

Hasn’t yet! Now, a slow reflex setting the hook with it is another story altogether…

Some cool ‘Live Carp’ coverage:

Where was the run?

On my ‘TODO’ list is to pull in some false albacore, tarpon, and dolphin on a fly-line. I’ve got tons of lit on fly-fishing for roosterfish in Costa Rica (now just need the $$$)
