The Fishing Thread

Funny pike story–

When I was in college, a few students and our advisor went on a trip through Ontario visiting mines and mining towns (Sudbury Big Nickel, Kid Creek, Cobalt, etc)-- geology majors…

So me and another guy were equipped with fishing gear, so many nights we had fish for dinner… In one of the parks we were staying the warden was talking to us giving us some tips and he told us they recently had a newsworthy event about illegal fishing.

They came across a guy who was pike fishing with live bait… KITTENS! Apparently he had a litter of small kittens that he somehow rigged to a line and was tossing them overboard…

I’ve seen bass hit toads and even small chipmunks, but kittens!!! Points for originality, but a deductions for not bein’ right…
holy shit, talk about evil.

That’s the funniest shit I’ve heard in a while. I love fishing, even though I can’t catch a damned thing.

Northern Ontario Musky Fishing is IMO the best around. Nothing like trolling drop offs with a big hunk of wood splashing around and some huge hooks. Scent helps as well. Like blood or something else. You know you have a really good spot when there are reports during the summer small dogs or cats swimming have just gone under and never returned. Sounds like a T-MAN’s fish to me.

That is not unheard of apparently. Even heard of people using runt baby pigs or baby raccoons. Northern Pike and Musky love small critters. Even pulled in some nice large mouth bass using a mouse lure. When preditors are hungry they eat. Even seen a small baby duck last in the line get taken down. First you seen it struggle and go under. Then it comes back up and then wham. Its gone with a big splash.

Yes, Glendale has Hybrid Striped Bass. The fishery is big in PA, NJ, MD, VA impoundments, especially the Susquehana watershed.

Funny you mention Glendale-- I had sent a PM to Szkykzy about carp I caught there when I lived in that area of PA.

Are you from that area?
Did you get the response I sent back? It seemed to submit oddly and I wasn’t sure if it sent.

Anyways, sorry if this is a reitteration, but cantral PA is a fishing mecca! The limestone that runs through the mountains of the region make for an awesome fishery.

I’m going to have to take a trip out there this fall. I’m prety sure that Spring creek and Glendale lake are withing a mornings drive. I know for sure that I can make the susquehanna in Harrisburgh in 3.5-4 hrs.

Addicted to Fishing? Guilty.

Starting this thread from what was started in T-Cell.

re: Carp

10-12# Test, Large Circle hook or #2 Hook, 1/4 oz sliding sinker:

Bait:

In plastic baggie mix in some combination of white bread, corn meal, olive oil, peanut butter, garlic, cheese singles, optional tuna fish.

Mix to a consistency that you can form a small meatball on the hook. Drop her in. Jig lightly off bottom.
Best time I ever had fishing for carp was , soak a can of con in Kool aid then chum the water with the corn, and use the corn as bait. None stop action of the best fighting fresh water fish. Too bad I don??t know how to cook them. My best Bass day was 2 # 5 lb bass. If you turn them so they face each others tail it covers half a news paper

I’ve heard of bass taking ducks

It’s evil fun! I did some up in Alaska, it’s so easy it’s stupid.

You just cast out with a weighted quad hook and yank back while you reel in.

You get your limit in about 30 minutes.
used to…it was once legal in these parts . but not anymore

Yeah, there’s a lot of pretty good fishing up there, especially around State College and south. Spruce Creek runs right in there-- the streams Presidents fish in

thats one seriously big fish.

must have taken 45 minutes to get it on the boat
Its the world record Musky.

I have seen a few caught where they just let the bugger pull the boat around. Just making sure that you don’t let it get snagged up on some tree’s or something. Then they just wait for it to tired. When you hold them they cut your hands open cause they have so many teeth. But those fish fight right to the death. Most times with the really big ones. Catching them means killing them lactic acid build up is a real bitch for them.

I wonder if some Surge and Flameout would help with recovery…

Don’t sweat it. I have been ice fishing since I was able to walk. I probably could be a guide, but this far south, we are lucky to get 6-8 weeks of ice fishing time. Central Illinois is not much of an ice fishing destination. That said, I take neighbors, coworkers and friends out every year. About three years ago, I had an intern from Turkey out on the ice.

He was absolutley fascinated by the concept of drilling a hole in the ice and fishing through it. The best part was reading the e-mails of his parents when we sent them pictures of their boy decked out in Carhartt bibs on a sheet of ice. Even though I am not officially a guide, if I can get a Turk that has never held a rod catching fish, I am pretty sure that I could put a douchey Irishman on fish.

As far as gear goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. This is what a typical panfish ice rig looks like (not me). Ice rods are usually under 2’ long (need to get them in a shanty) and pretty limber. My favorite panfish rod is about 20" long and whippy as hell at the tip.

Spinning reels are used almost exclusively and usually spooled with 2-4 pound line. As you would expect, you step it up a bit when chasing bigger fish like pike, bass or walleye. The most important part of an ice fishing rig is the spring bobber. Panfish bites can be incredibly light in the winter time, so a good spring bobber is key.

In short, they can sense when a fish inhales a bait. The following link is a pic of a spring bobber that I use.

Here is a video from the website where I got the pic that shows them catching panfish through the ice (Late Ice Panfish). This is essentially how we do it. Since you are such a pike freak, be sure to check out the video “Pike on 2lb Test”.

Here’s a squid I recently caught. Sorry for the shitty cellphone pic.

I used to eat them, but recently something about their eyes makes me feel too guilty to kill them. Squids seem much more intelligent than fish.

Ironically, there is an article in today’s Detroit Free Press on fishing Lake St. Claire for muskies.

No. Unfortunately it is now illegal here in Michigan. Has been for some time. Long enough ago that I was just a youngin’.

This thread has win all over it.
