16" walleye friday night

walleye for lunch saturday

M-Man-- nice!

I laid into a bunch of White Perch (cousin of striped bass) this weekend. Great little fighters and good eats (didn’t keep these though).

Tried for some carp, too, but no-go. I made my recipe a little to mushy so it didn’t have the ‘stick’ it needed. Was definitely stinky enough, though!

what size spinning reel do you use, would a 3000 be too big?

Not sure what size a 3000 is, but I usually use a small spinning reel when ice fishing, as the fish are almost always under one pound and we usually fish relatively shallow ponds (under 20’ deep).

the first vid took far to long to load but was hilarious when the guy nearly threw the rod over his shoulder when hooking his fish.

We usually fish over brush piles that we put in the lake, so my hookset is essentially raising my arm as high as I can. That sets the hook and gets the fish moving up the water column towards the hole and away from the brush pile. With such light line, if they get in the sticks, they will almost always break the line. It may look funny, but you have to do it to catch fish.

cheers for the pics and vids, but one more thing, how much do those rods you use generally cost?

Like any other fishing rod, it all depends on how much you want to spend. I have fiberglass rods that cost me about $5 and I have some graphite rods that cost me around $30. However, ice fishing gear has become pretty competitive in the past few years and you can get some pretty sweet deals on good gear. I usually buy all of my ice rods when the season is drawing to an end and the retailers have their sales. Unless it is a sweet deal, I will just use my small spinning reels on my ice rods (there are no summer/winter reels). This link is to a hunting/fishing store that I have ordered gear from.

and why are they so soft actioned, is it because the type of fish your after have soft mouths

Depends. Crappie tend to have soft mouths (AKA - “Papermouths”), so you need to be relatively gentle with them. However, the main reason to use a light action rod is that you are fishing straight down with very light line. As such, you need a flexible rod to cushion any shocks or the fish may break the line. Also, most panfish have an incredibly light bite in the winter, so the light rod helps you detect a bite. That said, not all of my rods are light action. I have several rods that I jig for bass/walleye with and it is relatively stiff.

why use such light line? because of small diamater?

Pretty much. We use very light jigs for 'gills, crappie and perch. They usually weigh about 1/32 of an ounce. Heavy line interferes with the lure sinking and screws up the presentation.

Do you handline them? That wire-rigging has to be some serious fun.

Hey fellow Michigander. I’m in Shelby Township.

Nice. Here in Colorado all walleye have to be eighteen inches to keep and large and small mouth bass have to be fifteen to keep.

The reservoir by my home has places where you can slam walleye all day long with a chartreuse jig tipped with a worm. Thing is there all between twelve and fifteen inches long for the most part. They’d be excellent eating size but we can’t keep em legally. Every once in awhile you’ll land the eighteen to twenty incher, but it’s rare.

Same thing with the bass you can nail the ten to fourteen inches all day, but again, getting a keeper fifteen incher or above is rare.

A couple of years ago there were some guys in the same cove me and my dad were drift bumping jigs off the bottom. I could see their poles bending hard every so often and we met up with them at the dock when some bad weather blew in, I checked out their catch.

These dudes had about seven walleyes ranging in size from twenty to twenty eight inchers. I had never seen walleyes that size brought in by anyone before.

I don’t know the averages up north where you are from, but here in Colorado that was quite an impressive catch. I told the dudes they should get a photo of it and send it to Colorado Outdoors or Outdoor life.

I don’t know what their secret method was cuz I was using the same type of jig and rig but those dudes were definitely doing something right.

I’ve been doing some fishing this summer out on Lake Michigan. Fishing hasn’t been that great this year, but I have pulled in some nice Rainbow Trout and King Salmon.

I love hooking a Rainbow and watching it dance on top of the water. Great stuff.

I’m heading down here this weekend- The youghiogheny at Ohiopyle

Ya ever pull in any of those “Allegheny Whitefish”?

Nah, that river is prety clean. Whitefish are popular in the three rivers though. After a good rain you can land them all day!

This thread is awesome! Dickbag, your fish are beautiful, just beautiful…

…I only fish ‘n frog (oh god I love stabbing frogs!) w/ my Dad a couple times a year now. I miss it. I should go hang out at a Bass Pro Shop or something and find me a fishin’ buddy.

Man, Dickbag, you look happy in that pic. I would be too. That’s one hell of a catch.

All I’ve hooked up with lately have been a baby brown trout, a few walleye, some smallmouth bass, and a ton of bluegill.

My new favorite is distance casting for bluegill. I found a pod of them that was about 50 or 60 feet away and picked them off for a few hours on sunday.

4 bass 15 to 17 inches
1 pike 24ish inches

many other attacks on our buzzbaits , losing 4 more after hook-up . lost one that was either a decent pike or a VERY nice bass (20" perhaps ?)

fun day with the kid

what lake?

Long Lake

Fond du Lac county (Dundee)

I’ve fished there before. You know the little lake that’s connected to it by the channal? There’s a ton of pike on the shoreline of the little lake/channal.

Also, if your interested in species THe little lake it’s attached to is the only place I’ve caught longear sunfish in my life.

We usually only can pull 12 inchers outr of long lake, what were you throwing?

that little lake is called Tittle Lake , believe it or not

few years back I ripped an 18"er in that channel ; wouldnt waste my time there during times of heavy traffic though .

we were tossin’ 3/8 oz buzzbaits…lime , white , and black towards dark . slip-drifting with the wind along the west shore…speed fishing at it’s finest .

if you’ve never seen a buzz-bait…it’s like a spinnerbait but with a turbine where the blade should be . the bait is fished fast , right on the surface ; when you get hit theres a big-assed SPLASH and then…fish-on ! but sometimes they miss it though…then it’s just a big splash and then a buzzbait flying towards the boat !
caught a flying buzzbait in my hand once…current PR !!

quite a thrill
