This might help too. You know what your doing bud, trust your instincts and good luck!

Do you do the figure eight at the side of the boat with your rod tip under the surface? I’ve heard that works well and also gives you a heart attack lol.[/quote]

Thought that was strictly for Musky?

Growing up, this bad boy and the stadard 5 a diamonds were the only two things my dad would use for pike, and he’d kill’em dead. I remember seeing a big largemouth one day and grabbing his beat to shit teeth scraped DD and him smacking me in the back of the head.

“That’s for pike dammit, use a popper”

Any of you guys collect old lures? I’d like to get a some of the old classics and put them in a shadow box, wish my dad still had his.

I knew that technique worked for muskie but thought it couldn’t hurt to ask.

Here is some pics of lures my grandpa gave me when I was a kid. I lost alot of them and wish I had kept them. That big one I have never used. It’s got a side lip wtf?

Here is some reels he also gave me. The one at the bottom left with the faux pearl inlay is my favorite. It used to have a handle with the same material but I lost it…my old man gave me a good smack in the head after he found out lol. The Cardinal C4 is my steelhead reel. That reel is probably 25 yrs old and it cost me $135 used. It’s a bitch to find spare spools. The red closefaced one is old too. Might be a collectors item, who knows.

I’d stick to shallower water around weed bed edges, points, and were structures meet like soft bottoms and rocky points. If its a 3 day thing on a lake that I’d never been too I do more of a run and gun tossing big stick baits. If the fish were pretty non responsive I’d probably go to a large suspending plastic of some kind or maybe jigs popped off the bottom. Drowning bait seems like a way that could end up waisting a lot of time in unproductive water.

But thats just me and I havent fished pike for a few years now.

Hey man, you gotta go with what you know though. Confidence is key as with anything and if you have the confidence with trolling and fishing dead baits, its probably going to be easier for you to stick out long days on the water using techniques that have worked for you in the past rather than trying something new and unproven to yourself.

As an example. I’m only an ok coho salmon fisherman. I get the majority of fish on float fishing roe. I have a lot of confidence in that technique. If I were going to a new river to fish I’m sure that at least a couple of my buddies would tell me to toss spinners and spoons all day long because it slays the fish for them. I get a few on spinners and spoons each year but I dont have the confidence in them to use them as my primary approach on a new water. I would rather use something for the majority of time that I know has produced consistently over the years when trying new waters rather than experiment with something new in a new environment.

Fishing success is preparation meeting opportunity. Fish 'em hard.

I also have more confidence in using spawn bags than lures. Do B.C. fiherman ever use flatfish for steelhead?.

What really helped me with drift fishing was to got to a 3# leader. I was always to lazy to makes the effort to tie on a swivel and go with the lighter line. Sure you tie more often cause when you snag it breaks more easily but the differance is really worth it. Going from 6# to 3# made all the differance in the world for me.

Good quote as well. I like the one “it’s why they call it fishing, not catching”

Dickbag…I think the bigger ones stack up there cause that’s where the bigger bait fish hang out…that’s my guess. Bigger predator fish prefer bigger bait fish no?

Do you have more sucess fishing the coves when the wind is blowing in? My thinking is the fish get blown in closer to shore. Could be wrong.

Fuck, I wish I was going with you lol.

Opening day for Rainbows in Ontario is in a couple of weeks. This pic is what it looks like on some stretches of river here :frowning:

Luckly my buddy has a camp that isn’t so crowded. I’m spoiled lol. We can catch one on front of his camp, gut it and cook it while it’s still warm so to speak. I’m going to blow them away with the mustard-dill recipe Steely-D was kind enough to post here. Maybe I can get out of doing dish cleanup dutie. Could be getting ahead of myself here…I gotta catch one first.

forgot the pic. I’ve witnessed fist fights in conditions like this. Fucking hilarious.

I’ve fished like that for Kings in Alaska, everyone got along, but it does get tense when the dude next to you hooks up and you have to get out of the way and interrupt your cast, etc.

Are they fishing with bait & lures OR snagging? I’ve fished snagging style in Ohio with huge treble hooks that had several oz of lead on em. Crazy indeed.

Fish story, well kinda.
Went fishing at a small community pond the other day and noticed the bass were cruising the shallows looking for a place to spawn. On the other side of the pond was a huge crane at the waters edge obviously hunting a meal. Saw him try to grab an occasional fish but never succeeded until we heard a loud commotion and he had in its beak a 3 lb bass! My son and I proceeded to walk over there to check it out and when we got too close for his comfort, rather than fly off he repositioned the fish in its beak and swallowed it (fish) heard first. Freakin amazing! Just knew that bird would choke on it. We returned to fishing the other side again and this bird resumed its perch at the waters edge.

We call it drift fishing. Different parts of the country call it other names ie: float fishing using a float reel, it looks like a fly reel but bigger. In B.C. I believe they call it a mooching reel. It’s a tougher way to fish. I just use a spinning reel with a 10.5 foot noodle rod.

The pic is a spawn/roe bag kit. Which are eggs wrapped in a little mesh bag. Sometimes you add styrofoam balls to add bouyancy so it floats a little bit. Basically you cast out up river, let it drift over the hole and once it’s past it you reel in and start again. It’s funny, even when it’s that crowded everybody gets into a rhythm and you don’t get caught up with the next guy. Once one dude says “fish on” you gotta reel in and watch. It sucks.

One scrap I saw was started when a dude was taking to long to reel in a rainbow. You don’t want to horse it in but this guy was milking it. Picture yourself in that pic. Twenty guys standing around waiting to fish and some asshole is taking twenty minutes to reel in a three pounder.

Seeing two guys in chest waders and all the gear roll around on the river bank trying to beat the crap out of each other up is a sight to see lol. Good times lol.

That bird reminds me of the kingfishers at the pond I fish(pics earlier in this thread). They bash the the shit out of the bass on a branch then they swallow it.

forgot the pic…fuck I’m stupid at this

I usually fish steelhead as heavy as I can. Usually 10 or 12 lb but if I can get away with 15 I’ll use it and if I can use 15 I can probably use 20. Dont lose a lot of fish that way and it makes it real easy to release them.

Nice combat pic Bond but I much prefer spots like this.

Oh man that is something. When I see a shot like that I think catching a fish is just a bonus.

You mean spots like this?

Combat Fishing! Hahahaha! I witnessed the spectacle that is the Lake Erie tributaries annual steel head run this year. At the mouths of the tribs guys stand shoulder to shoulder, tangling lines, snagging, and fighting.

I much prefer to head in a few miles and enjoy the scenery like those pics.

Well, since my last post we have not made any solid plans for Florida, New Orleans fishing trip came up though. Also, since my last post I have still not caught any fish. My husband, fishing right next to me has caught a few catfish, some delicious perch and a pretty nice bass the other evening. I’ll catch something soon…right?
I’m not complaining. What better way to spend an evening than fishing the Niagara River?
I’ll post pics of whatever I catch whenever I catch it!
