Sometimes it is just a minute difference in placement, drift, or any other number of factors that makes the difference between many and none.
Me and my best bud fish a little spring creek for brook trout. Since the creek is only a few feet wide, we take turns at each pool. He takes a turn at them, I take a turn, etc. At one little pocket there were about 6 brookies sitting in a pod feeding. He tries half a dozen times and finally just says screw it. I put a fly a few inches away from where he was drifting them and caught a nice 12 incher. He ties on a different pattern, puts the fly on the same drift and pulls out the most beautifully colored and biggest brookie I’ve ever seen.
Persistance and patience pay off- nice trout!
Speaking of fish being funny, I was fishing in a creek last fall and there was a beautiful big salmon just on the other side. It was happy to stay in that spot and apparently not very hungry. I was dangling the lure right in front of it, casting it ahead and letting it float by the mouth, I might have had better luck jumping in and grabbing it with my hands! Of course, my husband was trying out a remote control boat with a line on it and he catches a couple…
Once my fishing drought ends look out!
My next project- A Hook & Hackle 6’6" 2wt. fly rod. I decided on this one last fall after chasing brookies in the little spring creeks of the Laurel Highlands.
Well I got skunked on opening weekend but my buddy did manage to shoot a turkey so it wasen’t a total loss. I heard him take the shot while I was fishing lol. Water was low and clear and I wasen’t the only guy who caught fuck all.
The weather was excellent and getting out of the city was great. Might go back in a couple weeks and try again. After that it will out on the lake downrigging.
I was looking foward to trying out Steelys mustard recipe but it will have to wait.
Skyzyks, that rig looks very cool. The dude I fish with make his own rods too.
Here is a pick one of the holes, this is one of his dogs, a newfie. It’s a gentle giant and a big suckie baby.
WOO HOO!!!
Check this one out, boys! Finally the drought is over and I have caught a fish. I actually caught 5-6 of these! What a rush, they put up a pretty good fight. We were fishing Lake Erie at Point Abino. I’d like to get some perch, but apparently they are still in about 70ft of water and we don’t have our boat yet.
Anyone going to the Lewiston Smelt Festival next weekend?
It sure is a big fat smallmouth bass!! We felt kind of bad catching them this time of year, but it was fun and we didn’t keep any…
I think next we’re going to do some walleye fishing. MMmmmm…walleye…
This is the last fish I’ll ever catch at my secret hog hole. The owner died and the property was sold to some D-Bag who won’t let anyone fish there. I know it’s his property but damn I’ve been fishing there for years.
This fish was all spawned out would likely gone 6-7lbs a few weeks ago.

Nice smally D! Is that some kind of hybrid? Almost looks like a mean mouth?[/quote]
Nice largemouth yourself!! That sucks about your fishing spot. I’ve got a lot of similar stories about fishing spots, hunting areas, and general recreation land-- all ending with douchebags moving in.
re: smallie – I don’t think it’s hybrid, at least I’ve never heard of any up here. They are a bit toughened though I think because of the colder water and the fact that I’m in tidal water, too. They’re competing with sea-run striped bass, sea-run brown trout, and tidal white perch at this spot.
They tend to be smaller, but they fight harder than anything I ever caught all my years further south. Up close, the one in that first pic had some mouth and body scarring and some fin-wear— she’s breathed open air a few times in her life. Respect.
