The Superman Lives script was rejected because it was a shitty mess, not because Burton had it in for Smith. Even someone who is too simple to calculate movie running times would see that, if they’d actually read the screenplay and not tried to bluff their way out of a hole.

It was indeed all over the place but compared to the Superman Returns script it was pure gold. Superman Returns must have been written by a guy who hates Superman.
Thank you for reading the script for Superman Lives. The script wasn’t the only problem…Nic Cage was cast as Superman and he earned 20 mil on a pay or play deal for a film he never made (luckily). We kicked Superman Returns to death with Kryptonite boots in one of the Geek threads:
Possibly a slightly hostile response to a heroic alien who wants to save us, but he tried to turn the world into a soap opera…
I remember that thread. Never responded in it because I totally agreed. I knew that guy did not care. Retarded they let him get away with it. Prof X was right, that was NOT superman. Never knew Cage actually got money from the deal…
Production on Superman Lives was far enough along that he’d signed a contract guaranteeing his fee whether or not the movie ever got made. Nice work if you can get.
Cage was also one of the front runners to play The Scarecrow in Batman Triumphant (Howard Stern was up for it as well) which would have been Joel Schumacher’s third Bat-movie, also set to star Madonna as Harley Quinn and Keanu Reeves as Batman (not joking)
Then they got the backlash from Batman & Robin. They’d literally lost the plot by then.
