The Dark Knight Rises

Smith and Burton are both WAAAYY past their prime in making movies.

I was a bigger fan of Smith’s work but it’s been a long time since he hasn’t made a complete turd of a movie(Clerks 2 aside).

Never a fan of any of Burton’s work anyway.

I like Chris Nolan’s work.

To go back to what you were saying about Nolan being the wrong fit for Spider-Man and the like, I agree. But, I think he could do something serious with The Punisher, or even Daredevil. The Punisher keeps getting shitty films made in his name. They need to find someone who can do him justice. Nolan would be perfect.

It was indeed all over the place but compared to the Superman Returns script it was pure gold. Superman Returns must have been written by a guy who hates Superman.

Helena Bonham Carter is his wife.

Burton is just a one trick pony that is past his prime, not even worth talking about.
Burton is a massive nepotist. Lisa Marie’s career died the moment they split. Anybody remember Lisa Marie?

^ nope had to google and I loved Mars Attacks.

She was the glidey gum chewing alien in Mars Attacks. Never had many lines and usually had dark hair. Completely dropped off the radar when they split.

I admit I enjoyed Dark Shadows.

Well, technically I feel that Spider-Man and the like are a bad fit for a serious film by a serious director. Those sorts of characters aren’t tragic in the way that many of the iconic Batman characters are: the Joker, the Penguin, Two-Face/Harvey Dent, even people afflicted by some sort of neurotic pathology like the Catwoman or the Riddler are all victims of tragic circumstances beyond their control (in part). They aren’t victims of their own hubris like characters such as Doc Ock or the Green Goblin or Doctor Doom. I think that’s why the X-Men remain the only franchise that has produced that a couple of films that at least approach Nolan’s standard for comic book character movies.

The Punisher is much in the same vein as Batman/Bruce Wayne and except for one obvious thing: he kills people at will. Which is all fine and dandy, but in a way the Punisher is just Batman with the self-restraint removed. So even that character, as tragic as he is, isn’t that much different from pretty much every other comic character.

I hate to sound like I’m getting overly-psychoanalytical here, but I think there’s some merit to the idea that Batman’s refusal to kill the foes he continuously squares off against is what makes him an intriguing character for a serious film that no other major comic character can match. In order for an action film to transcend the genre (I think it’s safe to say that Nolan accomplished that with TDK and will probably do so again with Rises) it has to have moral depth to its characters. For Batman, the struggle is between the temptation to kill his enemies vs the symbol he has made himself to not only Gotham’s criminals, but also it’s law-abiding citizens. He serves as an example, but the limitation that that example places on him also forces him into a world of perpetual showdowns with the same madmen over and over again. He’s a trapped person whose very existence has accelerated and not stemmed criminality in Gotham.

What I would like to see are OTHER directors try to tackle similar themes and moods and so on that Nolan has done. I’d like to see Nolan branch out into other areas like Inception. As good as the Dark Knight was, that film might have done it for me even more so. I’d like to see him get back to films like that, or even Memento. I think now that he’s done with Batman and he’s apparently doing the Superman thing that’s enough superhero shit for him. He set the bar high and now I’d like to see other directors try to reach it.

The Superman Lives script was rejected because it was a shitty mess, not because Burton had it in for Smith. Even someone who is too simple to calculate movie running times would see that, if they’d actually read the screenplay and not tried to bluff their way out of a hole.

A better question would be why you’re greedily slurping the jizz out of Kevin Smith’s meatus with the enthusiasm of a starved vampire, when he’s notorious for airing his dirty laundry in public and blaming other people for making the skidmarks.

It’s not being “all up on Burton’s nuts” to point out that Smith has had his opportunity to make a better movie than Burton but he blew his chance. Put up or shut up. Too late now, though: he chose to deliberately sabotage his chances of ever making one. He’s making more money now than ever with his roadshows and radio station, so he wanted out of Hollywood and he shit on everyone to do it.

If you’d READ my posts instead of playing the idiot savant, you’d have seen that I said that Batman was remarkable considering Burton wasn’t really looking to make a Batman film. I’m fully aware of Burton’s limitations, I acknowledged them here, and you’ve summarized it as “dickriding”…

And yeah, I have a massive crush on Depp, well I would if I had a big enough vice. How are you getting on squeezing out the anal glands of Pee-Wee’s performing dog?
Just youtube Kevin Smith Tim BUrton, it will tell all.

Wake up. Kevin Smith is making a fortune out of shit stirring. His Q & A’s are about how he got shafted by Hollywood (and really what else is he going to talk about?). Bruce Willis was his latest target and the joke is that most of Kevin Smith’s movies were independently made.

He threatened in an interview that Red State would be his last movie ever - independently or mainstream. So Hollywood ruined his indie career as well? Wait- I thought indies were created to operate outside the Hollywood system… It’d be easier for me to name the superhero movies he’s been attached to than the ones he hasn’t.

I’m not gonna lionize the guy when he’s had ample opportunity to show his mettle. Tim Burton didn’t ruin Kevin Smith, Kevin Smith “ruined” Kevin Smith.

THAT’S what you’re basing all of this on…? Kevin Smith’s word against Burton’s?

Smith is a known exaggerator in his Q&A’s and like roybot said, he’s making a fortune doing those shows.

Burton and Smith have both shown themselves as second-rate film makers after their initial success. The difference is that Smith seems to have realised this and is breaking away from Hollywood(in the most dramatic and attention seeking way possible) to make money else-where.

I find Smith’s Q&A’s entertaining as hell though

Production on Superman Lives was far enough along that he’d signed a contract guaranteeing his fee whether or not the movie ever got made. Nice work if you can get.

Cage was also one of the front runners to play The Scarecrow in Batman Triumphant (Howard Stern was up for it as well) which would have been Joel Schumacher’s third Bat-movie, also set to star Madonna as Harley Quinn and Keanu Reeves as Batman (not joking)

Then they got the backlash from Batman & Robin. They’d literally lost the plot by then.

Wow what a pile of shit that would’ve been. Almost a shame it wasn’t made.
