The Bro Science Thread

Yeah, I get that - probably should have clarified. I was just mildly exampling how easy it is for people to jump to too much without context. If that’s a good way to train chest in a bro split, I’m gonna do it twice as much for twice the gainzzzzzzzzz.

It’s nice to know even my watered down leg days would be considered hardcore in the 70s though. :sunglasses:

That’s basically it. There’s a lot of nuance in terms of how the volume and intensity are waved, but one of the primary ideas is to just get a lot of volume at lower-intensity weights. “Strength as skill”

Here’s the bench press volume for two different templates. NL is “number of lifts”:

image

If you count 50% and up, that averages 134 reps/wk @ 69%.
If you count 60% and up, that’s 103 reps/wk @ 73%.

image

50%+, it’s 97 reps/wk @ 73%
60%+, it’s 75 reps/wk @ 77%

Definitely a different approach to thinking about it.

But they are sets of 3 and below. Where is the tension? It does not matter how much volume you do if it is not strenuous at all.

Sets of 3 at 70% is like an RPE of 3.

Strength training is weird. Sometimes less tension means better results.

How could that possibly work!? Changing my exercises every 4 weeks, altering my form a whole bunch each time something comes back around, making sure to get every possible set in for each body part just incase I might be missing out, and flip flopping my opinion on whats the best intensity method half way through the workout dependant on what TikTok showed me during my rest periods sounds like it would be much better than that. Nobody ever got jacked just eating right and lifting heavy things. Do your research!

Explosive lengthened partials are kind of fun though.

Lengthened partials are great. Just don’t use a flat barbell press at any point in your gym career because it’s a terrrrrrrrible exercise and you should be doing upside down one-arm incline cable flies instead.

I tried that this morning and it’s great for serattus development.

Have you seen these Jake Gyllenhal “Roahouse” workout videos?

Dude’s doing all kinds of serratus blasting moves. Including a 1 arm inverted row with a trunk twist. Its like the opposite of a one arm fly. Looks cool.

“Looks cool” is the primary driver of hypertrophy.

He only had to skip leg day to do it too!

Edit: to his credit I am still questioning why I care about leg day. I should turn it into abs/serratus day with a KB goblet squat finisher. Seems to be working for Hollywood.

Definitely one of the greatest scenes from any Eastwood movie. And up there with the most memorable from any Western.

I’m not sure which one I used … It was in 2010 I think.
I found a REALLY rough translation from the original which I assume was in Russian
I remember “a press laying” and I assumed that meant bench press
It also said to do “inclinations on a goat” but I skipped this exercise because I couldn’t figure out what that meant

Maybe that’s why I didn’t make gains
