I don’t see how it’s necessary, my back is 53" and I don’t do that shit, and I can’t recall ever having to do have that kind of stance except for the days I had lat pain.

Clearly, you aren’t as “swole” as some kid with a 42" chest who just did a chin up for the first time.
The only time I ever walked with flared arms is when I bulked up to 350 lbs but I looked more retarded when I tried to put my arms completely at my sides. People used to see me coming down the hall and pump their arms out in mockery but for me it was a natural stance and when I showed them a rear lat spread they understood. Also if your physique is balanced your shoulders should be wide enough that your lats barely touch your inner bicep/triceps.

I believe it. I don’t think it’s worked. I have always thought he walked like a dufus/pseudo tough-guy. I never termed it ILS, but it makes sense.

LOL.
Yea, that’s a possibility.

Yeah. I get the same thing when I’ve had a good leg workout. I don’t think it makes us look like we’re trying to big. Just stupid and possibly injured. But, what can you do? It goes away.

More recently my family have commented on the way i walk, with my arms flaring out from the sides as some people tend to walk pretending to be big. I am not, but my lats have grown so much that my arms just rest like that pushed out from the lats.
I’m thinking of cutting down on lat-pulldowns so i won’t walk around like a freak. It might also be an indicator that close grip underhand pulldowns are quite effective too. My parents think i put on that posture and i hope it doesn’t look that way to other people. But i want to be strong and big so should i really care what people think?
Did you really just write that at 190lbs you are so afraid of looking like a freak that you may have to cut back on lat exercises? At 190lbs? 190? ILS.[/quote]
I think alot of people may have a huge misconception about weight. I weigh about 50 lbs more than him and he may look more muscular and bulky than I do. Depending on height and natural muscle weight and bone structure and so forth. At 6’ 4" 240 lbs, I look about average build. There are some 180 lb ripped guys that look alot more muscular than me. Then again there are some 300 lb guys that I look more muscular than.
I had to mention this because there is a guy in my gym that claims he’s only 180 lbs but he looks about 200- 210 lbs. he’s about 5’ 9" or 5’ 10" and he is bulky as hell. I think without a picture, weight is a sure fine example to misjudge how someone may look.

This is true. Some people have full muscle bellies. They can look heavier even at lesser body weights. However, very few people of average height at only 190lbs are at risk of looking so freaky that they need to quit training lats…even if he was in contest condition. Also, judging by most pics posted on this forum, very few are carrying anywhere near that kind of size.
There is no disagreement that body structure plays a huge role in how you fill your body out at certain weights.

i think the phrase is “cock walk”.

Yes, but you didn’t take into account the fact that he’s 4’7".

Would you define these three cowboys as having ILS? No intentions of being gay or anything, but objectively, this pic pretty well exemplifies the posture I am talking about. They do have a bit of muscle on them, are reasonably well-built and I see some lats, so it looks fairly normal on guys about that size or bigger, who do have some lats to support their arms, but ridiculous on anyone skinnier.
This type of posture is either hard-wired into males, for us look stronger in front of the competition, or could be a behaviour learned from imitation.
Going off topic for a sec, I know some of you huge mofos out there would perceive these guys as being skinny, but most women drool over this kind of ‘lightly buffed’ physique and perceive it to be the ideal male size and build.
Back on topic, I think that when we are feeling jacked up, we naturally do tend to hold ourselves a little bigger and higher. I mean, it looks weak to walk around with limp arms all the time.
What it comes down to, is what is the correct balanced posture between excessive ‘macho’ inflation, and excessive limpness?

You know, what you said is becoming more annoying than the RAW vs gear debate, and it’s obviously not only you saying it. Who cares what women think is ideal? I can’t believe how many people here have completely lost their balls. Don’t base you goals on what some bitch says. And you know what else, most chicks have no idea what they want or what they think is ideal.
You say they would drool over this physique, huh, well probably because that’s what most strippers look like. It becomes ingrained and people associate it with sexuality. It’s almost taboo-like since the in-public rule with strippers is look but don’t touch.
So, accordingly, many women will see this body, drool, and think of something they can never really have. Or maybe I’m just full of shit. Either way it’s not like the “slightly built, lean-almost skinny look” is hard to attain.

bottom line, if you train to apeal to others, you will not achieve as good results as training for yourself.
My wife enjoys the security of a 250lbs husband, not a 160 lb metro.

I agree with this completely. I think as you get older it becomes even more apparent that you should train for yourself and not for how others may percieve you.

You will notice a common occurance here at T-Nation.
Younger guys are the first to want to cut.
Younger guys are the ones who post “someone hugged my woman and i dont like it” threads.
Younger guys are the ones having issues cause their ol ladies wanna have a threesome with another chic!.
Younger guys are the ones concerned about preserving their 6 pack when they wiegh 150 lbs.
Younger guys are the first ones to post that bar chics want skinny brad pitt guys and not muscle heads.
Ten years from now they will be here, taking our place telling the kids to eat everything and lift everything.
