The Best Sad Movies

My Life

Edit: The Michael Keaton movie. Not my actual life.
Bingo. This came out shortly after my grandfather died after a long battle with cancer. Tore me up.

Brian’s Song

The Champ.

I have a feeling I will cry at “The Express” - the Ernie Davis story, which opens soon.

I’ll try to think of some more.

Holy shit!! What Dreams May Come, was SO sad and I think this was about most gut wrenching movie i’ve seen.

I almost forgot “Roots”.

I think that miniseries moved me deeper than anything I have ever seen.

I was in 7th grade when it came out, and I was inconsolable for a week after it finished.

Man on Fire - He sacrifices his life to save the girl he cared for and protected.

Requiem for a Dream - Totally messed up movie about drugs and addiction where the ending is just plain depressing.

The Notebook - Yeah it’s a chick flick but a sad ending.

I am Legend - the part where his dog gets attacked and he has to kill it before it turns on him.

Into the Wild - the part where the old man wants to adopt Chris as his son plus when he dies at the end.

The Patriot - a few parts.
Requiem for a Dream for sure. I didn’t tear up, but I seriously felt like shit after watching it. Had to take a walk for a bit, then watch something comedic/cheerful.

You didn’t like the Ass to Ass scene?

I am serious when I post this.

Robocop

When he goes back to his old house and tries to learn about his past life. The part where he sees his wife gets me every time. Just when they’re about to touch, she disappears. I don’t cry, but I tear up from time to time.

A River Runs Through It.

“Why is it the people who need the most help… won’t take it?”

Anyone with a brother would understand.

Can’t believe this hasn’t been mentioned yet:

Braveheart: “FREEEEEEDOMMMMMM!!!”
and also where his wife is killed.

I think that was like middle school for me when I saw it in the theater.

American History X… just like Harsh Times and Requiem for a Dream, the ending will make you sit in silent for a few minutes.

About Schmidt was pretty sad because of how true and down to earth the movie and the characters are.

Gladiator, I Am Legend, Braveheart, Life is Beautiful, The Last Samurai, and 300. I have to say that alot of these movies have a similar theme of serving your country and strong family values. A man who is willing to give his life for his family and/or country is some kind of tough to me.

Revenge with Kevin Costner

American History X, they properly build it up to be a big happy ending and then… BAMN! his little brother gets it.

The Green Mile, Tom Hanks’s final conversation with the big dude when you know it’s wrong and he’s innocent but he happily goes to his death.

the second one really chokes me.

Oh yeah… What Dreams May Come! How could I have forgotten?
and Big Fish.

My Girl
The Green Mile
Boyz N the Hood
Braveheart

I’m really happy that I’m not the only one who blown away by the dog Futurama episode. I thought the brother episode was bittersweet, but the ending scene when SPOILER the dog slowly accepts its death SPOILER is the most gut-wrenching scene in anything that I can remember in a long time - but I thought I was just being a bitch.

I gotta say I didn’t expect a Futurama episode to dominate this thread. I will have to check this thing out haha.

I think this is a very underrated movie and very, very sad. It really makes you think about how you treat your loved ones and every little thing you say, especially to kids. This is probably worth watching again.

DB

The scene in Tombstone where Doc Holiday is lying in bed dying from TB and they have the discussion about friends.

Pretty much and scene involving a loved dog dying… Futurama, Old Yeller, I am Legend, etc.

I think most people can relate to the dog scenes. Almost everyone has lost a pet, and besides, this is one of those times a man can shed a tear or three and not violate a man law.

Yes! I thought I was alone on that one.

Edit:
Damn, seems a lot of people agree with that one.

Also, from recent memory Click got me quite choked up at the end.

I’m biased because I’m a pussy when it comes to movies, but…

Fox and the Hound
Friday Night Lights (I have no idea why)

On a side note, the episode of Futurama that has Fry finding his old fossilized dog practically made me weep after I saw it.
Watching that dog wait outside the pizza shop for Fry kills me every single time.

The brother episode makes me feel a little something, too.

Movie wise, American History X was something else, and Gladiator, I’ve gotta say that I’ve never lost it in a movie theater. Anytime I see a truly sad movie that makes me tear up it always on TV or DVD.
